RE: Registration marks missing
No problems here using Save As PDF to generate a PDF with crops. FrameMaker 9.0p250 (unstructured) running under Windows 7 Professional (64-bit). I'm running the SetPrint plugin which automatically makes Adobe PDF the default printer whenever FM is launched (not sure if that has anything at all to do with it; mentioned simply as another variable in the process). Document is 8.5x11 trim with bleeds on facing edge only. I output onto an 11x17 sheet with crop registration marks. File Save As PDF Select output location. Settings: PDF Job Options: Standard View Generated PDF in Acrobat: checked Generate PDF for review only: not checked Registration Marks: Western Page Size: Width: 11in Height: 17in Page Range: All Convert CMYK Colors to RGB: I get crops either way, although not having it wreaks havocs with screens, even though it's a black-only document. Bookmarks: Generate PDF Bookmarks (no other options selected) Tags: Nothing selected Links: Nothing selected That's it. Works like a charm here. I've used this method when creating output files for our printer's prepress department for years now (although for actual press output I have a custom Press Quality profile that doesn't downsample any images). They dump the PDF into their imposition software and away we go. RE: Need Advice on Upgrade Strategies for FM and Acrobat
Hello Jasmine, Our SME/Engineers are routinely given FM to draft documents. We have set up a template for them to use (unstructured FM) and if they are so inclined to help, this usually works very nicely. The template is firstly setup with the types of headings and some sort of general statement of how to populate the heading - eg - 1- unit name - 2- overview- 3 features 4- signal descriptions 5 theory of operation 6 programming 7 limitations - etc. Secondly, the FM template is setup for ease of use. One thing we do - is use para tag names that the engineers will understand - for example - BodyBeforeList which is exactly what it implies. And while this is an unstructured file, the next para is defined as a Bullet tag - so that they actually can get a bulleted list (should they need a numbered list, then we would explain to them to change that tag to Numbered1 whereby Numbered is the next tag - and so on. Now, if I were creating the template for FM Tech Writers, the tag name would be BBL or b4list or some shortened version whereby I could use shortcut keys - to format, but, from experience, I can tell you that the engineers don't like to remember keyboard shortcuts. F8/F9 are hard enough to get them to remember. Tables are already setup in the template. There was some special table we used that already had some cells straddled with different para tags in the relevant places, so that we put on the reference page - they can copy from the ref page. If you use conditional text, the other - very important thing I would make sure they know and understand, is to always work with **all** conditions showing - and give them a lengthy explanation on how to use conditions. I could go on and on... In other words, if you set up the template for easy use, it makes their and your job easier. As far as upgrades and Acrobat - you'll probably have to get the latest FM for the engineers -they most likely don't need the TCS. In the past, I think that single FM licenses came with Acrobat Distiller installed, then the SMEs can create PDFs which is basically all they need from Acrobat. $volnum needs one numbering format in heading and different format in page number
I'm working with a template that uses $volnum in section headings, where it is capital Roman (I, I, III...). $volnum is also used in page numbers in the footer, where it needs to be Arabic (1, 2, 3...). I'm pretty sure it is not possible to assign the same variable different numbering formats within a document. The only workaround that comes to mind is to use another variable in the page numbers, such as $chapnum and format it Arabic. Then instruct users that they must always ensure $volnum and $chapnum are in sync. Is there any other approach I'm simply not thinking of? Re: $volnum needs one numbering format in heading and different format in page number
I question the rationale behind such a design. If the same information is represented differently in two different settings, you are surely going to create confusion rather than communication. RE: $volnum needs one numbering format in heading and different format in page number
Michael, I completely agree. I would not like to have to represent the same information with two variables. However, if Frame does not allow for $volnum to have two different number formats, then my choices are limited. This template is not of my design and must adhere to the existing standard; otherwise, I would certainly advise the same numbering format in both the headings and the page numbers. But we work with what we have, not what we would wish. Function key for page break
Frame 8 on Win XP. Can anyone tell me if there is a function key that brings up the page break dialog box? The keyboard shortcut Esc s p b works well, I was just hoping for some way of getting to the dialog with? fewer keystrokes. Thanks, Roy Lewis -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... <$volnum> needs one numbering format in heading and different format in page number
I'm working with a template that uses <$volnum> in section headings, where it is capital Roman (I, I, III...). <$volnum> is also used in page numbers in the footer, where it needs to be Arabic (1, 2, 3...). I'm pretty sure it is not possible to assign the same variable different numbering formats within a document. The only workaround that comes to mind is to use another variable in the page numbers, such as <$chapnum> and format it Arabic. Then instruct users that they must always ensure <$volnum> and <$chapnum> are in sync. Is there any other approach I'm simply not thinking of? <$volnum> needs one numbering format in heading and different format in page number
Michael, I completely agree. I would not like to have to represent the same information with two variables. However, if Frame does not allow for <$volnum> to have two different number formats, then my choices are limited. This template is not of my design and must adhere to the existing standard; otherwise, I would certainly advise the same numbering format in both the headings and the page numbers. But we work with what we have, not what we would wish.
