Filename (Short) Variable

2011-03-05 Thread KGrace

I would like to be able to incorporate the framemaker file name into the title
of my document. If I make use of the variable Filename (Short) I am able to
get the results that I want with the exception of the .fm that comes along
for the ride. Does anyone know of an alternate method of getting the filename
returned WITHOUT the .fm extension.

RE: Filename (Short) Variable

2011-03-05 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi K'Chebe,

There is no way to do this with stock FrameMaker, but it could be done with
FrameScript. Here is how it might work. You would specify a user variable
for the script to use; this could be specified in an INI. For example,

[Settings]

FileNameVariable=ShortFileName

Now when you open or print the document or book, the script will
automatically run and set the value of the ShortFileName variable to the
name of the FrameMaker document without the path or extension. Since the
script is setting the value of a user variable, you are free to use this
variable anywhere you want, or not use it at all. And, because the script
runs automatically, you won't have to think about it once you create the
variable and put it where you want it.

If you are interested in a script like this, please contact me off list.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very
much.

This option is not available natively in FrameMaker.

A workaround is available in the context of FM-PDF or FM-PS workflows: as
part of a one-time setup, you can place the filename variable in a text
frame, add short PostScript code fragments before and after it, and tag the
text frame as PS code. The PS fragments will remove the extension and
control the formatting of the filename.

If this approach is applicable, I can send you (or anyone else interested)
a .fm file demonstrating the workaround.

Re: Text insets (Martin Ley)

We wouldn't even be able to use FrameMaker if it weren't for insets
(incorporations by reference). They work perfectly for us. Sometimes a document
of ours will have literally thousands of such live incorporations by
reference! --We rely on them the way a programmer relies on calls to a Call

Our big question is, when will the Internet people get smart enough to get
with insets, and finally grant us the same capabilities for
real-time-live-update insets in Internet coding (HTML, XML, etc.), as have been
available in FrameMaker?

Font oddity

2011-03-05 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Tim,

> WinXP
> my WINDOWS/Fonts folder does not contain any Helvetica fonts

Installed/registered/activated fonts does not have to be
located in the windows fonts folder. They can be located
anywhere on your drives.

Open your registry (start menu > Run > regedit) and inspect
the entries in
  "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
   Type 1 Installer\Type 1 Fonts"
and also in
  "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
   Fonts".
Any according entries here?

If not:
Although the original "Helvetica" might be provided either
by "resident" printer fonts from your printer driver or by
any legacy mapping entries to Arial in
  "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
   FontSubstitutes",
Helvetica Narrow and Condensed are probably not.
Anyway: Try changing your default printer in the system control
and/or your current printer in your application (e.g. to Adobe
Acrobat) and check whether those fonts are still available.

Kind regards,
Klaus
