RE: framers Digest, Vol 77, Issue 11
HI Joel and others, Regarding the footnotes, Klaus's idea makes the most sense, i.e., creating a cross-reference to the last row of the table. I was wondering if any of you reference your footnotes in another way. I suggested putting the footnotes - as references, but in a Footer row, as opposed to the last row of the table. The footer row, like the Heading row, repeats on each page of the table. This way, the reader does not lose their place in the table and can just glance down to the bottom of the table to see what the footnote is referring to. This obviously depends on how much space you're willing to give up on your page. Depending on the type of table and info, this may be more useful and easier for the reader. I would be happy to hear what others think of this idea. Re: Cannot print book PDFs from network drive
I noticed the same thing with AutoIt, a windows scripting language. There are times when a dialog box is supposed to take focus but it doesn't. This was not a problem in XP. I have a Windows 7, 64-bit machine and I also noticed that it takes a while for 2xExplorer, a 32-bit program, to access a network drive. It doesn't post alerts to the screen when there are problems. Instead, it adds a document to the taskbar which you have to click on to see. This applies to situations where you are being asked to name the file and choose where it will be stored. It certainly would be better if it brought this things to your attention directly on the screen via a pop-up dialog. Since being forced to move to Win 7, I've seen this problem with a number of programs (including Acrobat 9, which is what I'm using). When a program displays a modal dialog box requiring input from the user (such as a File Save or Print dialog, or message that must be acknowledged), that dialog box should take focus -- that is, appear on top of all other open windows and be selected. In Win 7, this often doesn't happen. I can't tell you how many times I've thought that an application wasn't responding to my input only to realize that there was a dialog hidden somewhere, waiting patiently for input from me. Aargh! I assumed that Win 7 introduced some changes in app-to-OS communications that pre-Win 7 apps don't properly handle. But Acrobat X was released _after_ Win 7, right? Could it be that the problem is with Win 7 itself? Richard G. Re: FrameMaker 9 Find not Finding
I'm running Frame 9 on Win7 and have experienced a lot of unreliability in Frame's Find function. I don't use conditional text or text insets, and the text I'm trying to find is not a variable or specially formatted. Frame is just blind to it sometimes. I can position the cursor immediately before the text I'm searching for and Frame says it's not there. There is no consistency or predictability to this behavior. It is just something I've had to accept as a head-scratcher. Carol At 11:00 AM 3/17/2012, you wrote: This is a very frustrating thing. My find command does no longer find what it's supposed to! I've checked all the settings in the Find box, like case, and book, and simple stuff. Sometimes it finds half the instances, but not all. sometimes it finds it if I put the cursor on the same page. Sometimes it does nothing. I've tried fixing and even a full reinstall. I will be switching from XP to Windows soon. Any idea if this will make the problem better or worse? ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Send list messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com.
