Missing Fonts message

2012-09-05 Thread Tammy Van Boening
FM 7, Win 7, 64 bit. For File Preferences General, I have Remember
Missing Font Names Selected. I have inherited a book that if I try to update
w/out opening all of files, I get the message Could not open FileName.fm
because it uses unavailable fonts for every closed, non-generated file in
the book; however, whenever I open any of these files, I do NOT get the
message about Filename. fm using unavailable fonts and stating what font
will be used instead. How do I figure out what fonts are supposedly missing
from these files and get this cleaned up so I can avoid this message if I
don't open every file in the book when updating the book?

TIA,

Go to File Preferences Alert Strings and see if the File contains

OT: Index page ranges

2012-09-05 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Framers,

This is more of a curiosity than anything. I was browsing the index in a
book last night and I noticed that at the end of page ranges, common numbers
are suppressed. For example 244-7 instead of 244-247 and 138-41 instead of
138-141. Is this simply to save space, or is there some kind of style
recommendation for this? Thanks for any insight.

I have these notes that I made for a project I worked on a while back:

1. Import the image into FrameMaker. It will look like a grey box in
FrameMaker, so it will be tricky to adjust.

2. Select the image and set Fill to None using the tools palette.

I think I might have found that answer here:

SOLVED: Graphics transparency

2012-09-05 Thread Pat Christenson
I found this onine:
http://www.meissner-dokuteam.de/Files/Frame/Transparency2_p250.pdf

It explains that the image needs a clipping path.

I also found something that said setting Fill to None doesn't work with .eps.

RE: Graphics transparency

2012-09-05 Thread Dov Isaacs
I have seen this original post and the follow-up responses and wanted to
clarify a few points.

(1)FrameMaker absolutely does not support graphic transparency as that
particular term applies to the Adobe imaging model and PDF versions beginning
with PDF 1.4. For that matter, neither do PostScript or EPS (Encapsulated
PostScript) files formats support live transparency. PDF files with live
transparency that are imported into FrameMaker documents have their
transparency flattened when they are internally converted into EPS. PDF
created by FrameMaker is always via distillation of PostScript and by
definition, never has live transparency.

(2)FrameMaker supports everything that EPS supports in terms that
whatever is in the EPS file to start with is output into the PostScript stream
for printing or PDF creation. EPS files don't have transparency, but can have
clear backgrounds, i.e., no background behind the objects in the EPS file.
Unfortunately, some designers cling to the concept that they must always
provide a white background for their artwork. If the file has such a background
in Illustrator, you are pretty much stuck with it when the resultant EPS is
imported into FrameMaker.

(3)For display purposes, FrameMaker only displays the TIFF preview of
an EPS file and even then ignores the transparency in the low resolution TIFF
preview (if you save as EPS in Illustrator and request a transparent
background). Thus, you will not see a clear background.

(4)Be careful to check the runaround properties of the EPS file you
place. That could force the clear background to be lost in not only display,
but print!

Missing Fonts message

2012-09-05 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Tammy,

Go to File > Preferences > Alert Strings and see if the "File contains
Unavailable Fonts." checkbox is checked. If it is not, you won't get missing
font messages when you open a file. Please let me know if you have any
questions or comments. Thank you very much.

OT: Index page ranges

2012-09-05 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Framers,

This is more of a curiosity than anything. I was browsing the index in a
book last night and I noticed that at the end of page ranges, common numbers
are suppressed. For example 244-7 instead of 244-247 and 138-41 instead of
138-141. Is this simply to save space, or is there some kind of style
recommendation for this? Thanks for any insight.

Missing Fonts message

2012-09-05 Thread Tammy Van Boening
Thanks Rick and Nadine. It's a bit more involved, but it's using the new
feature from 9 that I had to remember : View > Pods > Fonts with an
offending file open and then select the missing font and click the Replace
icon to select the replacement font.

Hi Pat,

Try making a PDF of the document. The transparency may not show in
FrameMaker, but it may print/PDF fine.

I have these notes that I made for a project I worked on a while back:

1. Import the image into FrameMaker. It will look like a grey box in
FrameMaker, so it will be tricky to adjust.

2. Select the image and set "Fill" to "None" using the tools palette.

I think I might have found that answer here:
http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2010-March/019668.html

It still shows white in the PDF so it looks like the problem is with the
graphic, not FrameMaker.

Note that this is true only when the EPS graphic does not include a TIFF
preview image. If the graphic does include a preview image, you will see an
ugly, pixelated version of the graphic that is good enough for identification,
but not much else.

The graphic has a preview image but setting Fill to None didn't help. (I
printed the page to be sure.)

Too bad because that seemed like such an elegant solution.

Thanks.

I found this onine:

It explains that the image needs a clipping path.

I also found something that said setting Fill to None doesn't work with .eps.

It's not the image that you need to select, it's the anchored frame or graphics
frame into which you imported the image. This can be a little tricky sometimes.
Open the Graphics palette and make sure you have View > Borders turned on.
Click the mouse on the dotted-line border of the frame, not on the image inside
it. Then in the Graphics palette, click Set Fill Pattern and in the Fill
dialog, click None.

Well, my original answer was a half-baked anyway. I missed some other steps.
This is where I actually got my answer originally:
http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2009-June/017102.html. That
worked for whatever I was doing at the time.

*sigh* Maybe I should be quiet now.

Anyway, in the end, many tech writers make transparent graphic work. ;-)

Graphics & transparency

2012-09-05 Thread Dov Isaacs
I have seen this original post and the follow-up responses and wanted to
clarify a few points.

(1)FrameMaker absolutely does not support graphic transparency as that
particular term applies to the Adobe imaging model and PDF versions beginning
with PDF 1.4. For that matter, neither do PostScript or EPS (Encapsulated
PostScript) files formats support live transparency. PDF files with live
transparency that are imported into FrameMaker documents have their
transparency "flattened" when they are internally converted into EPS. PDF
created by FrameMaker is always via distillation of PostScript and by
definition, never has live transparency.

(2)FrameMaker "supports" everything that EPS supports in terms that
whatever is in the EPS file to start with is output into the PostScript stream
for printing or PDF creation.

(4)Be careful to check the "runaround properties" of the EPS file you
place. That could force the clear background to be "lost" in not only display,
but print!

How to add Table numbers to List of tables

2012-09-05 Thread Apurva Bahadur
Dear All,

Please help me overcome a peculiar problem in FM.

I have a document with number of tables.

Each table in the document has a 'Table Title' paragraph style applied to
it. Thus the text below the table reads "'Table 1: Letters of the
alphabets" etc.

When I make the List of Tables (special -> List of Tables), the LOT
displays only "Letters of the alphabets ... 2" (assuming that the
particular table is on page 2).

What I want to do is the display the complete text in the LOT like "Table
1: Letters of the alphabets ... 2"

Any idea how this is done?

I hope my question is clear to you. Many thanks in advance.

FM10 special character

2012-09-05 Thread Timothy DeWees
We upgraded to FM10 this year and now I'm having trouble creating a special
character. I'm trying to create a right arrow, as in a chemical equation.
(I have the special toolbar, but it doesn't include this.) I can't seem to
get this symbol using the old FM8 method of using a character and applying a
"symbol" character tag. I looked online and it suggests using the character
palette, but I can't get that to open. It seems maybe that was in FM9, but
not included in FM10? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Question about char tag override indicator

2012-09-05 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
Hey all.. got a puzzler for you.

In FM10, I have a document that has character tags. One of these is bold, which
has everything set to "as-is" but the font weight.

For some reason, when I apply the tag, it's always marked with an asterisk, even
if I apply "Default Para Font" first, and then "Bold".

Saving the doc doesn't seem to change the indicator either.

Any idea what might be happening, other than a bug in FM?
