Rucksprung durch Technik: reverse hyperjump key?

2012-12-13 Thread Steve Rickaby
With apologies to Audi, who have just charged me a lot of money.

Can someone remind me whether there is a shortcut keystroke, or any way, of
traversing a hyperlink in the reverse direction? For example, in Mac
FrameMaker, I can use controlalt-click to jump a cross-reference link, but
is there a way of jumping back?

I did check [my] archives, and found escvP, but it doesn't seem to work
across files in the same book.

FrameMaker doesn't, no, but the JumpBack plugin from Electropubs gives
you the capability:

RE: FrameMaker 11 - Stability / Crashing on Save.. Help

2012-12-13 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
I'd be tempted to copy those FM9 Master Pages into some other location, upgrade
them to FM11 and resave them. Then start a new project based on them and
gradually add files, saving as you go.

Subject: FrameMaker 11 - Stability / Crashing on Save.. Help

Hi All,

Recently updated to Adobe FrameMaker 11 (within TCS4, which was an upgrade to
my existing TCS 2.5) and all was going well, kind of - until now.

Now with my current project due to be uploaded at the translators asap - a
small Technical Overview publication, consisting of 11 files (Covers/ .fm's/
.toc, book 30 images 190 Mb total) - it's crashing on demand (almost).
Thankfully I can re-create it with minimal effort.

The crash hasn't happened on any other projects, but to be honest I haven't
tested that - though the project in question Crashes on another FM11 pc..
conclusion - it's the content/files for that project, right?

The CRASH - usually happens at/during saving a document you've Imported Formats
into, (All formats or even just Page Layouts) from a corresponding file
contained in the same book.

So who has had experience of any Crashes using FM 11 (and fixed it) lol?

Or more specifically has anyone had experience of a FM Project (publication)
repeatedly Crashing during Save or just after Import Formats; Page Layouts then
Saving using the Save button.. any one?

I can't help think it's related to the Track Text Edits (TT), MaterPage
formation, Variables /or Conditional text, I had to create 'on fly' for this
urgent Tech Overview in 4 days from my master set of original FM9 files.. (The
FM9 utilised files, were opened directly with FM 11, saved as into a new
project folder, added to a new book created in FM11 then all edited updated
(with TT on where required) and published as Pdf).

So the way I see there's 2 options going forward;

1. Contact support again, and start the (painful) process of a support
ticket with Adobe FM Support Desk, (correct)?
(As I have a collection of CRASH screen captures and FM crash logs to support
the problem. I found it strange the 1st support staff didn't review/ask for
these?).

The problem with this is the content is confidential - can't hand out.

2. Or copy the project, and purge all the files of all functionality,
Cond. Text TT Edits, Variables then transfer (copy paste) the harmless
text/graphic content into a fresh/clean FM 11 made file, that contains new
'hand made' (not imported Masterpages) and then format all again
(Conditions/Variables etc), then build test the project again (40+ pages).
Joy..

Or is there an easy way, please let there be..

Thanks in advanced..
Sim

Running Dell Precision Workstation M4300 (I7, 4GB Ram 106 GB free space)...

Hi Steve

Try the following:

   1. Hold down CTRL+ALT and click a cross-reference to jump to the target,
which is in a different file in the book.
   2. Hold down CTRL and press the TAB key to jump back to the source of
   the cross-reference.

Does this work?

I like Yves' novel solution!

To clarify, the Ctrl-Tab doesn't actually take you back to the source of the
cross-reference, but is the key which switches between open documents. (similar
to Alt-Tab in Windows)

When you activate a hyperlink in FM, the last document you were in happens to
have the hyperlink, so you're closer to the link than you were.

I have noticed lately that I get placed on the first page of my document.
Usually I can use a cursor key (or the Go To command) to quickly navigate to my
insertion point.

Re: FrameMaker 11 – Stability / Crashing on Save.. Help

2012-12-13 Thread rebecca officer

Hi Simon

You've tried washing it through MIF?

And did you save all files before trying to do the import? With some crashes we had in Frame 10, constant saving was enough to stop the crash.

If the answer to both of those is "yes", I'd assume the file's not corrupt, it's a Frame bug. So I'd send it to the translators anyway and see if they have problems. Hopefully they won't, or they won't be doing the same workflow as you are so won't trigger the crash.

Steve,

We used to set up a giant BACK hyperlink along the left or right margin of
the master pages of our documents. This would allow us a BACK function from
anywhere we click on a hyperlink. Just set up a background text frame with
hyperlink on the master page. cntrl-alt-click will then work from the body
pages.

Interesting...

It used to be Ctrl-F6 to switch between documents. Indeed, in FM11 it
still is. Ctrl-Tab is a nice alternative.

Ctrl-F6 always struck me as being the ultimate in unfriendly keyboard
shortcuts. Guaranteed to need the use of two hands because Ctrl and F6
are pretty much as far apart on the keyboard as you can get.

If you press ESC, v, P it takes you back to the source location as long
as the source and destination are in the same file. If source and
destination are in different files you just go back to the source doc
and you should be in the same place, as long as the file didn't close.

Does anyone know why sometimes when you click on a cross-file
cross-reference the source file closes and sometimes it does not close?

I edited the *cmds.cfg* file to add an easier shortcut, ESC, b, b
Mine is located at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\FrameMaker9\fminit\configui\cmds.cfg
It's not so hard to edit. You might want to give it a try.

In v7.2 on Windows, Ctrl+Tab cycles through the open documents in the order
last visited (the functional equivalent within FM of using Alt+Tab to cycle
through the open applications). Thus after you use a hyperlink to jump from one
open doc to another, Ctrl+Tab takes you back to the doc you came from (and of
course, you're still at the same insertion point location).

Of course, if only one document is open it does nothing.

That may make a difference -- I don't know. I haven't used a Mac since the old

I have just spent two days wrestling with a consistent crash on
FM11.0.1.382. It appears to be linked to editing master pages, but I

activity at the time.

And it is not just one file. I was able to reproduce it using files
created from scratch. Tweak the master page, save, close, reopen, and
tweak again. Eventually the file gets to a point where you cannot make
the slightest change (change one dimension of a text frame, for heaven's
sake) on the master page without FM crashing either on saving/closing or
when generating a book using DITA-FMx.

It may be a DITA-FMx problem or it may be a native FM problem. We've
reproduced it on two machines, both with DITA-FMx installed. Interesting
that the OP mentioned master page changes in his process...

Incidentally, it is not the slightly friendly FrameMaker has
encountered a serious problem and must quit message. It's the Windows
FrameMaker has stopped working, rsssppp variety. Though this
morning I also had the friendly form occur once when saving the file. Go
figure.

Time was when FrameMaker just worked. Now when problems occur I don't
know whether it's FrameMaker, DITA-FMx, or me. (If it's me, it's also my
colleague!)

Hi Roger,

Are you working with ditamaps or with FM book components?

I was able to work almost flawlessly with ditamaps for the FM11 reviewer's
guide, but only produced the FM book components at the end for the PDF
production and/or linking to RH for EPUB output.

IIRC, the FM components seemed to be much less stable.

FrameMaker, I can use -click to jump a cross-reference link, but
is there a way of jumping back?

I did check [my] archives, and found vP, but it doesn't seem to work
across files in the same book.

FrameMaker 11 - Stability / Crashing on Save..

Now with my current project due to be uploaded at the translators asap - a
small Technical Overview publication, consisting of 11 files (Covers/ .fm's/
.toc, book & 30 images >190 Mb total) - it's crashing on demand (almost).

Or more specifically has anyone had experience of a FM Project (publication)
repeatedly Crashing during Save or just after Import Formats; Page Layouts then
Saving using the Save button.. any one?

I can't help think it's related to the Track Text Edits (TT), MaterPage
formation, Variables &/or Conditional text, I had to create 'on fly' for this
urgent Tech Overview in 4 days from my master set of original FM9 files.. (The
FM9 utilised files, were opened directly with FM 11, saved as into a new
project folder, added to a new book created in FM11 then all edited updated
(with TT on where required) and published as Pdf).

So the way I see there's 2 options going forward;

2. Or copy the project, and purge all the files of all functionality,
Cond. Text & TT Edits, Variables then transfer (copy & paste) the harmless
text/graphic content into a fresh/clean FM 11 made file, that contains new
'hand made' (not imported Masterpages) and then format all again
(Conditions/Variables etc), then build & test the project again (40+ pages).
Joy..

Or is there an easy way, please let there be..

Thanks in advanced..

   2. Hold down CTRL and press the TAB key to jump back to the source of

Does this work?

I like Yves' novel solution!

To clarify, the Ctrl-Tab doesn't actually take you back to the source of the
cross-reference, but is the key which switches between open documents. (similar
to Alt-Tab in Windows)

When you activate a hyperlink in FM, the "last" document you were in happens to
have the hyperlink, so you're closer to the link than you were.

I have noticed lately that I get placed on the first page of my document.
Usually I can use a cursor key (or the Go To command) to quickly navigate to my
insertion point.

FrameMaker 11 – Stability / Crashing on Save.. Help

2012-12-13 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Simon

You've tried washing it through MIF?

And did you save all files before trying to do the import? With some crashes we
had in Frame 10, constant saving was enough to stop the crash.

If the answer to both of those is "yes", I'd assume the file's not corrupt,
it's a Frame bug. So I'd send it to the translators anyway and see if they have
problems. Hopefully they won't, or they won't be doing the same workflow as you
are so won't trigger the crash.

Cheers
Rebecca

Rucksprung durch Technik: reverse hyperjump key?

2012-12-13 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Interesting...

It used to be Ctrl-F6 to switch between documents. Indeed, in FM11 it
still is. Ctrl-Tab is a nice alternative.

Ctrl-F6 always struck me as being the ultimate in unfriendly keyboard
shortcuts. Guaranteed to need the use of two hands because Ctrl and F6
are pretty much as far apart on the keyboard as you can get.

On my ancient (v 7) version, sadly, no. I maybe should have mentioned, the link
destinations are in a table. The CNTRL+TAB does do something - it advances to
the cell below. In open text, it does nothing.

(I'm on Mac).

Rucksprung durch Technik: reverse hyperjump key?

2012-12-13 Thread Shmuel Wolfson

I haven't used a Mac since the old
one-piece versions. :-}

FrameMaker 11 - Stability / Crashing on Save.. Help

2012-12-13 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
I have just spent two days wrestling with a consistent crash on
FM11.0.1.382. It appears to be linked to editing master pages, but I
haven't been able to narrow it down precisely. It *may* be associated
with DITA-FMx (Scott is looking into that), but FM crashed frequently
when just saving or closing this particular file - that is, no DITA-FMx
activity at the time.

Incidentally, it is not the slightly friendly "FrameMaker has
encountered a serious problem and must quit" message. It's the Windows
"FrameMaker has stopped working, rsssppp" variety. Though this
morning I also had the friendly form occur once when saving the file. Go
figure.

Time was when FrameMaker just worked. Now when problems occur I don't
know whether it's FrameMaker, DITA-FMx, or me. (If it's me, it's also my
colleague!)

I don't understand how a hyperlink on a master page could know where
"back" would be at any given moment.

FrameMaker 11 - Stability / Crashing on Save.. Help

2012-12-13 Thread Matt Sullivan

FrameMaker 11 - Stability / Crashing on Save.. Help

2012-12-13 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hi Matt

I've been using DITA-FMx to generate a book from a ditamap. Because the
book is divided into parts, the generation process uses a template for
each "divider" file. It is this template file that I was tweaking. When
it works, it creates separate book components for the dividers as well
as the chapters. I do now have a working set, but only because I have
taken my tweaks so far. Having saved each "good" tweak into a new file,
I can quickly revert to a good copy when an extra tweak breaks things.
Life on the edge!

I know that if I make the slightest modification to the text frame on a
master page in that particular template file, it will crash FM when I
generate from the map using DITA-FMx (always). Or sometimes when I make
the tweak, save the file, and close it. It is this last factor that
makes we wonder whether it is a native FM problem or a DITA-FMx probem -
or if somehow my file becomes corrupted at some point in the generation
process.

Cross-reference to a previous file

2012-12-13 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Thanks to David, Lin, and Robert for replies to my question about
picking up a paratext from a previous file in a book and displaying it
in a running header/footer. It appears that FM will not do this.

To David: No, I can't use the Volume building block because it is
already in use.
To Robert: I can't incorporate my "divider" page into the beginning of a
chapter because I am generating output from a ditamap.
To Lin: Thanks for the suggestion of using a crossref. I could do this,
but it would need to be replaced each time I generate the output from a
ditamap. That's just because of the way it works (using one template for
all chapters in the book).

So I will have to do without it. Thanks for your help. You have at least
saved me from trying to get it to work when it won't.
