Distiller changes page sizes at will

2013-03-05 Thread Heiko Haida

Hello Thomas,

most of our PDF files are produced with visible
printer marks (FrameMaker 8, Acrobat 9 Pro, Win XP).

In some cases,
pages will be trimmed irregularly like you mention it.
So when checking
the PDF file I always set this back to zero for all pages just to be
sure.

I have no idea at the moment why this happens, but until now I
could still handle it.
Of course it would be embarassing if hundreds of
files were affected or if the output was produced without any
possibility for manual correction.

It would be great to find out more
about this ...

Best regards -

Use a real computer?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :-)

But seriously, I doubt that Adobe's SQA tested it on a tablet. Sounds like an
enhancement request to me. Are you really intending to use it as an authoring

Save as PDF hangs FrameMaker 11, with PDF cover art

2013-03-05 Thread Shelly Schneider
I have cover art using a PDF file. The cover bleeds on all edges. I have
been using this from at least Frame 7 up through Frame 10, with no issues.
My company purchased FrameMaker 11 and Acrobat Pro 11 for a new 64 bit
computer. Frame hangs when I try to Save as PDF or print to .ps using the
Adobe PDF printer, both with the latest updates. A one-page frame file with
just the cover will hang. Other, smaller pdfs sprinkled throughout my docs
cause no problems. If I replace the cover art with a jpg or png file, I can
make a pdf, but the quality is not the same.

I reported this to Adobe support, and they worked with me for a while, but
they were unable to reproduce the problem, so that was no help. Has anyone
else had this problem and found a solution that won't require me to replace
the cover art in all my docs?

I finally found that I can save the cover art as eps with a preview, and get
an excellent quality pdf using the eps art. Yay! And the preview prevents
Frame from displaying eps files as those off-putting gray boxes, so I'll use
that if necessary.

Thank you!!

Shelly Schneider

FM 9 - Logical Network Drive

2013-03-05 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Hi,

I wrote a few months ago about images, imported by reference, blinking on
screen. The FM files and images are on a network server.

The problem seems to be that the new tech writer used SnagIt to save new screen
captures using the network logical drive specification
(\\Oseille = X:).

By scripting I did a search and replace. All seems well now. Quite a relief.

Anyone else save images to a network drive using a logical drive specification?
Any problems.

Have a good day!!

Distiller changes page sizes at will

2013-03-05 Thread Thomas Scalise
Esteemed colleagues,

I am running FrameMaker 10 and Adobe Distiller 11 on WIN 7 Professional. I have
a simple manual with a Title Page, a TOC, and 11 chapters. The manual is in A4
size. I have created, and use, Distiller job options for the A4 page size.

When I make a PDF ( using Save as PDF), the Title page, the TOC, and Chapters
1, 9 10, and 11 all format correctly. Chapters 2-8, however, format with the
top of the page trimmed off (the page size reverts to 8.5 X 11). The same thing
happens if I Print the manual to a postscript file and run the Distiller
against that file.

I should say that using the same Distiller settings against another A4 manual,
the results are completely correct. No shorter pages in the PDF.

Has anyone faced this problem? I have not seen it before, and I have made PDFs
from many A4 size manuals. It looks as though starting with Chapter 2 the page
size is changed in the Distiller to 8.5 X 11 and then changed back to A4
starting with Chapter 9. Is there something that I have inadvertently done in
those chapters that is causing this Distiller behavior? To my knowledge I have
done nothing different in FrameMaker than I have done before in creating a
manual (nothing I am aware of, at any rate).

I came here rather than going to the Adobe forums, which are byzantine in
access and glacial in pace. Thanks is advance for any help you can give.

RE: FrameMaker 10 to FrameMaker 11

2013-03-05 Thread Craig Ede

I agree with jowens. Also, be sure to apply the latest update after
installation as there was an initial problem with printing to PDF.

I work with both 10 and 11 and really appreciate the improvements in FM11. It's

Tom

why is FM's UI so weird and buggy?

2013-03-05 Thread Craig Ede

The kind of UI thing that bugs me is this: You have two documents tiled on the
screen. You are in the left side document with your cursor in a paragraph that
you want to retag. You slide your mouse over to the docked paragraph catalog
(which is open on the right side of the screen) and click on a paragraph tag to
apply it. Instead of applying it in the left hand document, you new tag is
applied in the right hand document. Maddening!

Maybe... at least you could go get a cup of coffee while your book was
rebuilding.

RE: Wrong font in index page numbers

2013-03-05 Thread Craig Ede

I sent Steve something offlist, but I pretty sure you can correct that with the
< before the page numbers on the reference pages (not at a
FM machine right now). I'm sure we did something like this back in Frame 3. I
know we never did the kind of search and replace you seem to be describing.

Oh, FM3! Those were the days, weren't they?

Re: Chunking FM files into Topics for RH

2013-03-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
The big plus with using paragraph tags is that you are defining
general rules with exceptions, so can make global changes.

For example, if you have been breaking at Heading 1 and Heading 2, but
want to add breaks for Heading 3, it's one change in RoboHelp, plus
applying Heading 3 Nobreak in FrameMaker for the topics where you
don't want breaks.

With markers, you'd have to add a marker for every Heading 3 except
those where you don't want breaks. General rules are not enforced by
the application so there's no way to make global changes. In the long
run, I think that would be a lot of unnecessary extra maintenance work
and over time you'd be likely to accumulate errors as a document
passes through the hands of various authors and editors.

Using paragraph tags also makes it faster and easier to see how any
individual heading is set or change it.

Re: why is FM's UI so weird and buggy?

2013-03-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
Adobe's OWL UI doesn't look or feel much like Office 2010 to me.

Re: FM-to-RH users' list?

2013-03-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
I found the RoboHelp FM integration forum helpful.

Though if you have the budget, this would be the time to switch to a
different tool.
