RE:FM12: SaveAs PDF not showing Dingbats in Ref pages

2014-02-08 Thread Davis, David
Most likely culprit is a font-embedding issue?
What is the Dingbat font you're using. Does it support embedding? Is it getting
embedded in the PDF you make from Print to file?

Hi all,
I always use print to file and distill from there. Today I was playing
with the new FM12 creating a small newsletter. There was one heading that
needed a dingbat above which I created, and it showed OK in FM12. But when
saving as PDF it just did not show in the pdf file. I tried this in several
ways but finally did as I always do and printed the fm to file and distilled
from there. Now the dingbat showed.

So, still the SaveAs PDF is buggy and not to rely on, it seems.

Best regards,
Bodvar

RE: FM12 has char format in xref been fixed?

2014-02-08 Thread Craig Ede
The essence of the workaround that was described is based on the fact that font
family changes are respected in xrefs (try formatting part of a line with
WingDings, for instance). Thus the kludge that allows you to define a family
that incorporates formatting like bold, or italics, or blue, or whatever by
simply making it look like a different font family. (Disclaimer: I have never
done this.)

There are good arguments (as the one you make) for ignoring such formatting as
bold, ital and the like in an xref, but ignoring a ZapfDingbat or symbol font
char format could be disastrous. Imagine a mu becoming an m within an xref.
So FrameMaker is designed not to ignore that. The wonderful thing is that you
can use that feature to accomplish (albeit with a bit of work) what is
desired by the original poster.

..snip

How you got about it all depends on the context. I would guess from your
original post that you want to use $paratext and get the text *and* any
character formatting applied to it. But FrameMaker doesn't work like that:
you can't 'recover' character formatting from an xref source's text.

I don't know about maker.ini fixes, as FrameMaker 7 for Mac doesn't use
 maker.ini.

If all the above is nonsense, or completely off-base, I apologize: I'm trying
to think in the midst of a gale that's trying to take the roof off.

RE: Conditional text - looks like there are some big differences between 9 and 12

2014-02-08 Thread Craig Ede
I take a look at the recent webinar that Adobe posted on the new Features of
FM12. The conditional text stuff is covered.

That tutorial for FarmeMaker 9 has been working pretty well for me until now,
because there appear to be some big differences in the interface for
conditional text tags. The tutorial for FM9 says to click the Apply button at
the top of the list of tags and select the in radio button -- but neither of
these things are included on that window for 12. Also, FM 12 includes a State
check box that isn't in the FM9 interface. Is anyone familiar enough with FM12
to straighten me out?

2014-02-08 Thread Roman Banks
Hi David,

Personally, I highly recommend using FM keyboard shortcuts. This removes the
need to mess up with the FM menu.
For example, to apply a condition to a text string, press Ctrl + 4 or F7 to
open the Condition drop-down menu and select the relevant condition.

Roman

Master Page vs Body Page Text Boxes - How to Auto-Delete Blanks?

2014-02-08 Thread Lisa Freeman
Hello Fellow Framers,

I am having a dilemma with Master Page Issues.

FrameMaker 10, Structured. I've been using FrameMaker for 15 years and never
run across this issue.

The left and right master pages have a text box in the footer area set to be
editable on the body pages. This is needed to track various revision dates.
When tags are displayed and edited, etc., more pages are added to accommodate
the expansion of data as they normally would be. But, when the tags are turned
off and it's time to create the output file (either printed or PDF), the
additional pages cannot be deleted because Frame doesn't see them as Empty.
The text box from the master pages is still on each of the additional pages.

The pagination is set to Delete Empty Pages. I have tried creating a blank
master page with and without the same and different text flows, tried
disconnecting the pages, and every other trick I know.

Maybe I've just been looking at this for too long, but if anyone can point out
something obvious that I am missing, please help!

Thanks in Advance!

Sincerely,
Lisa Freeman

Re: RoboHelp apparently doesn't support FM text insets or other referenced content

2014-02-08 Thread Robert Lauriston
The first problem you're encountering sounds like a very longstanding
FrameMaker bug involving cross-references in text insets, nothing
specific to RoboHelp. The workaround is to use hyperlinks to named
destinations. See page 90 et seq. in this document:

FM 12 structured authoring training

2014-02-08 Thread Harvey, Peggy
Hi Framers,

My company is making the move to DITA and will be using FM 12 as our authoring
platform. We've been using FrameMaker for years and everyone is very
comfortable with the unstructured interface, but the structured interface is a
new beast for us. Can anyone recommend possibilities for training on the
structured interface? I've watched some Adobe webinars on the subject but
they're just not putting the pieces together for me. I don't know yet what our
budget will allow but I'd like to get an idea of what's out there that might
meet our needs.

Thanks,
