What end product should i give them? or thinking of moving help application, but to what???

2014-06-11 Thread Carrie Baker
As I mentioned some time ago, I am finally moving to a new computer.

I tried to install on Windows 7, but the patch for Frame 7 wouldn't
install, so I am working with virtual XP.

I have Frame 7,
and ePublisher pro version 9 build 5737 (maybe I have a patch for that
too, as I thought I have version 9.2)
As well as the PDF user guides which they want, I also create for them .chm
files for one sort of application (which runs on C++)

and html files in the format of WebWorks Help 5.

These html files have a security message when you try to open them and only
open in IE.

The company has 2 applications which run on the person's computer, and all
the others run in a web browser integrated with IBM Cognos.

They are talking about soon making their applications available on a Tablet.

I would like to request new versions of the software, but I would also like
to make the ROI for this.

i.e. I need to tell them that with the new software I can give them
something better.

I think that I would like to give ePub for when they use a tablet.

For the html files, which application will be easy for me to move to, and
what will the advantages be in the end result.

Should I still give .chm?

Or is something else used now?

I am looking for something that is truly single sourcing (Today I just
press a button.. once everything was set up).

Any more insights etc will be helpful.

RE: What end product should I give them? or thinking of moving help application, but to what???

2014-06-11 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
If you’re already happy with authoring in FM, I’d stick with it. Then I would
get the Tech Comm Suite to produce your EPUB output and/or HTML5 responsive
help that would work for tablets too ( look much better than an EPUB). Don’t
get too suckered in by FM12’s claims that you can publish straight out of FM –
the level of control over output is still being worked on. Try the trial
version first on a non-production machine to test it out.

Re: What end product should i give them? or thinking of moving help application, but to what???

2014-06-11 Thread Writer
Note: I am an MVP with WebWorks (the company that makes ePublisher).

Carrie, I recommend that you stick with ePublisher, but upgrade to the latest
version. ePublisher now has an HTML 5 output called Reverb. Reverb output is
designed to resize on devices of different sizes without you having to use more
than one template. That would be a great solution for both your tablet and
desktop/browser targets. In addition, you can generate .chm, PDF, Eclipse help,
ePub...

The down side is that ePublisher does not support FM 7. That doesn't mean that
it won't work; it's just not supported. You might want to consider upgrading
FM, too.

If you have more questions about ePublisher, you can also contact me offline.

Another CMYK/RGB oddity: Logo graphics positioned over a background on our

retain it when printed to CMYK.

Well why the devil should the PDF generation fail if you select RGB mode?
And what if you *want* it to be in RGB mode? (as you quite legitimately
might do!) Bugtastic!

And Matt, on your blog:
 Font handling
Deselect this ambiguous option: 'Rely on system fonts only; do not use
document fonts'

There's nothing ambiguous about that option! And it's very sensible. I
wouldn't advise anyone to deselect it.
Otherwise, Distiller can create a PDF which references fonts which are only
present in a document that's currently open and loaded in RAM on your PC.
It is likely these will not embed properly and so you will be creating a PDF
that has limited portability.

Matt,

RGB-CMYK was the culprit! I just tested with CMYK checked in the PDF
settings, and the file rendered correctly. I switched that back to RGB and
it failed.

Thank you!

Re: Am I alone in having this internal error this morning?

2014-06-11 Thread Austin Meredith
Martha Lee suggested: I got several Windows updates last night. Maybe you did
too and that's the cause of your Internal Error: 9004?

Thank you, Martha. I also received and installed those several Windows updates
last night.

The excellent news is, my problem is now fixed, and very simply. In the
FrameMaker system folder there is a folder labeled Linguistics. Search for
that folder, and rename it Linguistics_old -- forcing FM9 to initialize a new
such Linguistics folder.

Immediately I was able to fire up my FM9 and get back to work!

(Please, everyone, do *not* ask me to explain why that worked. It worked, that's
all. I am back in the ranks of the happy campers.)___

RE: Jeremy H. Griffith, 1942-2014

2014-06-11 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Indeed, very difficult to come to grips with.

Jeremy was incredibly helpful with questions I had with Mif2Go. And I admire
his effort to help people with free copies of the software when they were
unemployed.

He and his presence on this list will be truly missed. My condolences and
prayers to his family - if someone knows them, it would be great to pass our
respects along.

This was really hard news to ingest. Jeremy was someone who truly walked the
walk and talked the talk . . . he lived is beliefs and values so firmly. It was
something to be admired.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Oh, that sucks so much. I liked Jeremy, he was a good guy.

 Hi everyone

I was very sorry to see a recent post on the dita-users list saying
that Jeremy has died. We've used Mif2Go extensively and found Jeremy
incredibly helpful. The FM community won't be the same without him.

Jeremy Griffith, the creator of DITA2Go and Mif2Go, died on May 15
after a long illness. He will be missed very much.
