importing master pages, but not getting Room for Sideheads (FM12 unst)
Our Marketing group wants us to use new templates that have room for a sidebar. We won't actually use the sidebar for anything, and it's OK for titles, images, and tables to extend into the sidebar. We may put notes over there. We have been able to do this with the Room for Sideheads feature, and we're pretty happy with the look. But when we import formats from one file to another, all the formats come over as expected except for the sideheads setting. Is this a bug? A feature we don't understand? Has anyone dealt with this? anchored text frames in sideheads
I just posted a question about importing formats from a sidehead-enabled template. Here's a related question: Assuming we can make the sidehead template work, we'd like to be able to put some content over there, while keeping it in Text Flow A. That works fine for a single paragraph - the following non-sidehead paragraph appears in the main column just where we left off: 1 text text text sidehead text2 text text text 3 text text text But if the sidehead text includes multiple paragraphs, then the subsequent main column paragraphs are pushed below the level of the last sidehead para: 1 text text text sidehead text sidehead text sidehead text sidehead text 2 text text text 3 text text text The sort of content we would put in the sidebar is Before You Begin, This Section Includes, etc. We need to keep it in Text Flow A because ultimately it all goes into a knowledgebase with all the same content, but no sideheads. I tried anchoring a text frame to the main column text and positioned over there, but I cannot put any content into it. I define it as a text frame, but it always reverts to a graphic frame. Re: anchored text frames in sideheads
Try using a table and putting the text in the table. It's the only way I've ever found to make that all work. That may screw up publishing to the KB, tho. Re: anchored text frames in sideheads
Did you try inserting a table under the sidehead, with the table entirely in the sidehead area? Or maybe use a spin on the two-cell warning-icon-in-the-sidehead, and have a two column table with the left column matching the width of the sidehead and the right the text column. Could probably do this with multiple tables, all anchored sequentially to the same anchor tag. Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com ... Re: anchored text frames in sideheads
John I sent you a sample PDF, directly, of sidebars produced from an 800 page XML file and opened into Structured Framemaker. Are you using FM structured or unstructured? Yes, you can only have one sidebar paragraph per textflow paragraph or it opens up whitespace in the text flow, but you can use linebreaks and styles. We use the sidebar on the right. The left margin with the section numbers is done using margins and negative first indents I use text, tables and images in the sidebar, but I have to wrap the images in a table, or I had problems and I don't remember what it was Tables automatically flow over the sidebar, but I have styles for allow text in the flow to span across the sidebar. So the answer to you first question is, yes it can do it. Next is to determine how to help you get it dialed in. If you are using structured FrameMaker I could send you some of my tagging methods for this. Re: importing master pages, but not getting Room for Sideheads (FM12 unst)
To elaborate John's point on the importing of formats from one file to another, the problem seems to stems from the fact that when the template is applied to another document almost all of the formats are applied except for one -- the Room for Side Heads object property is disabled for the text frame on the body page. However, all of the template format settings look fine on the master pages. Even when I reapplied the master page this still did not change the Room for Side Heads text object property on the body page. To resolve this problem, I selected the Object Properties for the text frame on the body page and enabled Room for Side Heads. This manual updating of the text object property seemed to do the trick. I am not sure if this Room for Side Heads object property issue is with FrameMaker; it should accept 100% of the object property settings from a template file. Getting a handle on structured Frame
I started my Frame 12 experience with a new convert to ebook/pdf project. I created an unstructured book because I quasi-know-what-I’m-doing in the unstructured world. However, I think to publish this book as an ebook, it has to be structured. How do I choose which DocBook file to start with? Also, my project involves converting two novellas into one ebook. I believe I’m going to require one fm book with two nested books within. How do I add that structure to the DocBook file? I now have ~50 files which are components of my unstructured book file. How would you recommend that I take the contents of those 50 files and move them into the structured book? Thanks for your help. I’m sure there will be more questions. Re: Getting a handle on structured Frame
This is one of the more common and frustrating mis-conceptions I see in the FrameMaker community that publishing to ePub and other newer output formats requires structured FrameMaker. In fact, even when working with structured source files, FrameMaker's style mappings are based on paragraph and character formats, not elements. If you are comfortable with unstructured FrameMaker, and have unstructured source files, I would start by experimenting with FrameMaker's eBook capabilities there. File Publish. Choose your target format, and click the Edit Settings button. Play with the Style Mapping tab and see how that affects your results. Configuring structured FrameMaker presents a daunting learning curve, that I would not recommend climbing unless you have clear requirements to do so. And FrameMaker's DocBook implementation is..., well..., anybody who tries to use it for real work is in for a world of hurt. -Alan --- Alan Houser Group Wellesley, Inc. Re: Getting a handle on structured Frame
Hi Theresa As others have said, it doesn't have to be structured to become an eBook. As an aside, be aware that ePub processes can make a mess of your formatting, whether you are using structure or not: imho they are a work in progress. I know this for a fact, having seen the mess that the ePub processes can make of a nicely formatted print/PDF book - in my case, textbooks. However, if you *do* decide to tackle the structured learning curve, I found the same problems with the structured documentation as you have when I started with structured FrameMaker. Partially as a result, I wrote a series of articles for the ISTC as a beginner's guide. If you would like a copy, let me know. Structured is a head-banger when you're new to it, but it doesn't have to be complex, and it can be rewarding. I'd guess that starting from DocBook is not the best plan for you, especially if your books aren't structurally complex. DocBook was designed as a one-size-fits-all solution, and as a result the EDD contains zillions of elements, most of which you would not need. Your first steps are probably: . Do a thorough analysis of the structure you will need. You can think of this in terms of para styles to start out with, which will then be encapsulated in elements if you decide on structure. . Decide whether structure will help you. Factors here are the amount of automation (not automation as in scripting, but the rules that structure offers) that would help helpful, and other factors such as the usefulness of XML - FrameMaker exchange. . Decide on whether to create your own EDD or modify an existing one. See my comments above on DocBook. Let me know if you'd like a copy of my beginner's guide. At the very least it will give you an idea of the complexity of structure and whether it's worthwhile for you. -- Steve Rickaby http://www.wordmongers.com ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: framers Digest, Vol 106, Issue 10
In response to Message: 10 (below): We moved to structured FrameMaker/DITA last year and it was a long process. On the other side of it now, it is much clearer and easier to convert our other guides. We got help from a consultant, Matt Sullivan, who is active on the Adobe message boards, as well as Rick Quatro, for FrameScript work that made our conversion process much easier. If you have the budget, and really want to convert to structured FrameMaker, I would strongly suggest hiring Matt Sullivan to help guide you through the process. However, if your main goal is to create an PDF, you do NOT need to convert your unstructured file to structured format. I am not familiar with what format an ebook would be in (for Amazon Kindle?). For PDFs, you should be able to do a File - Save as PDF and get a PDF. But perhaps I am not understanding your end goal properly. I've read that the best reason for converting to structured FrameMaker format is if you want to do a lot of re-use of your content in different documents. Is this the case for your project? We use FrameMaker 11 and I am not familiar with DocBook, but perhaps someone else on this forum can address that. As far as combining two novellas into one book, in unstructured FrameMaker could you create a new book file and then add the .fm files for both books in order, so that one novella follows the other? In PDF format, you can combine to PDFs, but it sounds like your desired output is an ebook...which I am not so familiar with. I hope there's something helpful in this response... You have two choices .. from the Structure Tools menu choose Edit Application Definitions to edit your local structapps file (this is most likely what you should be using) .. OR .. from the Structure Tools menu choose Edit Global Application Definitions. The app definitions in the local file are typically those that you create for your own use. The global app definitions are those for apps provided by Adobe. I recommend that people never modify the default apps .. either create your own from scratch (for advanced users only), or clone the default apps and give them a new name and modify those (the most likely scenario). You will mess up the apps (everyone does), and it's important to have the default unmodified apps to go back to for testing. In general you should be able to have all the apps installed and available for use at the same time.
