My guess is they chose Responsive HTML over WebHelp for the same
reason they dropped topics, used larger type and screen shots, added
page breaks, and posted a URL to pages not visible to the public.

We recently changed our templates to eliminate the alternating left/right page

the blank pages if anyone wants to print double-sided. Our pages are numbered
consecutively straight through the entire document, starting at the front
cover, so that the PDF page number always matches the printed page number.

We keep the left/right because many of our customers print the PDFs and
keep them in binders for compliance or policy reasons. It's no extra

refer to those printed versions.

I have a few clients that say exactly what you say since everyone reads
PDFs online and hardly anyone prints a manual anymore they want the
chapters to end just when they end, regardless of page number, and then I
have clients who are insistent on double-sided PDFs for proper pagination
upon printing. The more complicated/technical the document, the more that I
tend to be in Rick Quatro's camp (especially because of my age as well!)

Re: Page count even or no

2014-12-18 Thread Scott Prentice

imho
It's my assumption that the purpose of a PDF is to represent a printed
book, so I will typically include all the bits that make that PDF into a
book if printed. There are still lots of people who print PDFs (or at
least parts). If someone reading the PDF online has to jump over a blank
page here or there, that seems like a minor inconvenience compared to
the bad pagination when printed double sided. Whether you start with
page 1 or i seems less important to me and I can totally see the
point of forgoing the roman numbering, since that's a holdover from when
the frontmatter was generated separate from the body. (I do still prefer
the roman numbering, just because it feels better to me though.)

If you're providing PDFs primarily as online documentation, that seems
like a bad idea to me. PDF is a horrible format to read online. It's
certainly fine in a pinch or if that's all that is provided, but a well
thought out HTML-based (searchable and fully indexed) set of online
docs, is much more efficient.

/imho

Cheers,

...scott

Deleting Variables at the Book Level

2014-12-18 Thread Tony Marek (PDF)
Hello all – Second question in one week:

Is there any easy way to delete obsolete variables from the variables
library at the book level (Frame 12)?

I’m trying to create a consistent list of variables across all chapters in
a book and I can’t find a way to do the deletions except
chapter-by-chapter. Importing variables from one up-to-date chapter to
others does not perform any deletions of variables not on the source/master
file.

Thanks,

~Tony

Tony,You need the Clean Import plugin. You manually clean up on chapter in the
book, then run Clean Import against the rest of the book and you are done.
Works with para tags, char tags, cond text, etc.

Subject: Deleting Variables at the Book Level

Hello all – Second question in one week:
Is there any easy way to delete obsolete variables from the variables library
at the book level (Frame 12)?

I’m trying to create a consistent list of variables across all chapters in a
book and I can’t find a way to do the deletions except chapter-by-chapter.
Importing variables from one up-to-date chapter to others does not perform any
deletions of variables not on the source/master file.

Thanks,
~Tony

Has Electropubs come back online? The last time I tried the site, it was
gone. If it is, then Clean Import is no longer available.

Which is sad, as it was a very useful utility.

 Tony,
You need the Clean Import plugin. You manually clean up on chapter in the
book, then run Clean Import against the rest of the book and you are done.
Works with para tags, char tags, cond text, etc.

I keep to a standard book style as well – especially as we are required (per

We keep the left/right because many of our customers print the PDFs and keep
them in binders for compliance or policy reasons. It's no extra trouble, and
the docs look more professional is they ever need to show or refer to those
printed versions.

We recently changed our templates to eliminate the alternating left/right page
layouts, since a consistent page layout looks better online, but we still keep
the blank pages if anyone wants to print double-sided. Our pages are numbered
consecutively straight through the entire document, starting at the front
cover, so that the PDF page number always matches the printed page number.

Do you guys still follow print protocols and produce PDFs with an even number
