RE: User's manual vs. User manual

2015-03-13 Thread VLM Tech Subs
“User” is a noun. Nouns do not modify nouns; adjectives—and articles, if you
have a more traditional view of the Parts of Speech—modify nouns.

Ergo … è User’s Manual, User’s Guide, user’s mannerisms, user’s fork, user’s
eraser, user’s banana, etc. Of course, one could choose “Usage Manual”, or just
plain, old, run-o’-the-mill “Manual”. But then there could be—and often used to
be—User’s Guide/Manual, Reference Manual, and more.

One solution to this mind-numbing conundrum might look like this:

Getting Started Guide
User’s Manual
Reference Manual
Shortcuts (often a card or the like)
Developer’s Guide (wouldn’t say “Developer Guide” … right?)
SDK Reference [Guide/Manual]
Scripting Reference [Guide/Manual]

I like to think in terms of systems. :)

Bottom line: At every opportunity, preserve our language. For these days, if we
don’t, not many others will.

IMO, that was at least three cents worth, what with inflation and all … :)

Best regards,
Elchanan

My own preference is to name the thing for WHAT it is rather than FOR WHOM it
is:

Quickstart Guide
Installation Guide
Reference Manual
Operating Manual
Instruction Manual

Or be even more specific:

Using the Zipchip 5000
Guide to the QZ190
IBM System/360 Principles of Operation
The Tektronix 465 Oscilloscope

Personally, I’ve always preferred User Manual.

I find the other option awkward to say as well as awkward looking.

I agree. If you use the possessive version, is it going to be User's Manual
or Users' Manual ? Too messy.

SVG import FrameMaker 11

2015-03-13 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi,
one of my clients reports an issue with SVG files in FM11. There’s no preview
for imported SVG’s and re-importing gives a filter error. SVG’s are created in
Illustrator (CS6).

Anyone els seen this, what can be the cause?

(note: the SVG’s displayed fine in previous FM version)

Vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,

Wim Hooghwinkel

Som extra info: we found a logfile (empty), named svg2pdf.log after the svg
import failed. does FM convert SVG to PDF to create a preview?

Goedeavond Wim,

It does appear that FrameMaker 10 and 11 create a PDF facet when
importing the SVG.

Miles33 and Framemaker

2015-03-13 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I've been asked to research solutions for a client's sister company
that currently uses Miles33 to produce a 600-page catalog. The
company is unhappy with the costs associated with upkeep of this
catalog and wants to explore other options. From what I can see on
the Miles33 Web site, it is an XML-based publishing system. I need to
locate resources who are familiar with Miles33 and who might be
interested in bidding a conversion project from Miles33 to
Framemaker. Please respond off-list.
