For PDF please try something like this
message URL
file:///transfer/locales/a.txt

Maybe "open document" or "message client" depending on what kind of
object it is. What behavior do you want in the PDF?

Re: [Framers] How Install FrameMaker Update Patches on Old FM Versions?

2019-12-17 Thread Robert Lauriston
If you want to generate professional-quality PDFs from Confluence
content, get Scroll PDF Exporter.

If the license fees are too high because you have a lot of users, you
can install it (even locally on your PC or Mac) in a separate instance
and copy spaces from the main instance when you need to generate a
PDF.

Re: [Framers] How Install FrameMaker Update Patches on Old FM Versions?

2019-12-17 Thread Kevin Ryan
Hi Phyllis,

Hi, NOT what you are asking, but I am wondering: what will you do with FM
docs in confluence?

We are converting years of traditional FM-to-PDF books guides to online guides
in Confluence that take better advantage of interlinked parent-child page
hierarchies and the easy-update capabilities of Confluence. Incidentally, for
those readers who still prefer PDF books, we are also including in the initial
Confluence title page a link to a supplemental PDF-export produced by
Confluence (not highly impressive) tweaked a bit in Acrobat to look more
presentable.

It is not a fool-proof process (as Mif2Go is out of date as well since Jeremy
Griffith's passing!), but as soon as the conversions are completed, my company
is unfortunately planning to move away from FrameMaker.

How are you using MIF2Go to migrate to Confluence? Pasting HTML page
by page? I worked with Jeremy to try to get something more efficient
but we gave up.

Have you tried running setup.exe in Windows XP compatibility mode?

[Framers] How Install FrameMaker Update Patches on Old FM Versions?

2019-12-17 Thread Kevin Ryan
Hello,

We are migrating and updating scads of accumulated FrameMaker documents into
Confluence, using the old FrameMaker version 7.2 (with MIf2Go as a converter).
Yes, I know this is an old version, but it works.

My old PC is being decommissioned and I'm reinstalling FrameMaker 7.2 on a new
Windows 10 machine. When I visit the FrameMaker patch web page at
https://supportdownloads.adobe.com/product.jsp?product=22=Windows I
see two patches applicable for FrameMaker 7.2 that I want to install. My
problem is I forget just how I am supposed to handle the downloaded patches'
Zip folders. When I unzip it one in place within the Downloads folder and
click its contained setup.exe program, a wizard starts but gives me an ominous
"Severe" error popup (not elaborating what is so severe), followed by an
off-the-wall message that "The system is running very low on disk. You need to
free up at least 40 MB of space" when in fact my hard drive has plenty of space.

Alternatively, I also tried clicking Help > Updates from within the FrameMaker
program itself, but this produces a pop up "Uploading Adobe Online Components"
highlighting "AWEXFiles.txt" followed by a message that reads "There was a
problem connecting to Adobe Online" and "Adobe Online Error;File Could Not Be
Downloaded."

Am I doing something wrong? Any tips from you FrameMaker mavens would be
appreciated. Maybe it's an Adobe end-of-life statement for version 7.2.

Thank you,

Kevin Ryan

Re: [Framers] Backup in different folder?

2019-12-17 Thread Lin Sims
Almost anything. :)

Some things I think the design of the program make impossible. For example,
table footnotes are always at the *very end* of the table. If you have a
multipage table, that can be a real nuisance.

The only workaround is to put xrefs in the table to information in a footer
row that is formatted to look like a footnote, but then you have all of the
"footnotes" appearing on every page instead of only on the page where
they're wanted. Maybe what's needed is a way to make table footnotes go to
the bottom of the page like regular text footnotes instead of being part of
the table structure, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they wouldn't be
able to move with the table if edits changed its position.

Just one more reason to believe that, in the right hands, FrameMaker can do
anything authors discover that they need it to do, and that the collective
community knowledge probably contains a solution!

Thanks, Rick!
