I an currently using Framemaker 2015 and use "\+" in many variables. I also 
have many documents in older versions and it works there as well.

Scott,You might want to hang onto that 5.5 book. Once Adobe started creating 
the documentation the Index started going downhill, when compared to the 
original Frame issued books. The original Index was actual usefulI wouldn't 
part with mine unless I had to.

Try changing where you have F: to a different letter; F for the first one, G 
for the secong, etc. Each numbering value should have it's own unique 
character. There is a name for that character but it escapes me right now.

Tested with FrameMaker 2015
Importing, by reference, a text inset into a FrameMaker file.Text inset had a 
cross reference to a paragraph in another chapter.Created a PDFCross references 
in the PDF worked just fine.The only gotcha would be that the cross-reference 
target must always be present and in the same chapter, otherwise it would have 
to be changed each time. A reference to say a contact page that appears in each 
document and is always in the same chapter, otherwise it will be broken or 
require changing each time.

In such situations, I create a user variable, where I can use the 
non-breaking hyphen. In FrameMaker, one generally inserts a non-breaking 
hyphen with the sequence, esc-hyphen-h. It ends up looking odd in dialog 
boxes for things such as variables, but it always works.

Yes, I searched and found this error had existed in earlier versions. This is 
the first time I have seen it and I have been using Frame for 20 years.I tried 
a couple of the hints that were posted, first removing the TOC and Index and 
updating the book. Same error.Rebuilt the TOC and Index, still getting the 
error.It looks like Jeff's response is spot on. An old bug has resurfaced.I 
can't find anything wrong with the book. All cross-references work fine. TOC 
and Index look fine.
Time for Frame to let the test guys loose, after checking what the fix was 
before.

I recently upgraded to the latest FrameMaker2015 patch.Suddenly I am getting a 
strange unexplained error message:
'Book is not self-consistent'
Our documents are all in Unstructured Frame but I was running in Structured 
mode when I first received this message.I changed to Unstructured mode, 
thinking that might be the cause.I still get the message whenever I Update a 
book.
Does anyone know what this message means?

I, too, use the Exclude feature in all of my books. Most of my
excluded files are positioned at the end of the book, so my way of
handling this might not work for you if you have excluded files
sprinkled throughout the files in your book. I create a Folder at the
bottom of the book and put all of my excluded files in it. I can
expand and collapse the folder to hide its contents. Framemaker
colors the icon for excluded files and folders red, so it is fairly
easy to spot them.

Carol,Never noticed that it turns the file icon red. If it also changed the

I don't use it extensively, yet, but can see where it will be.in common use.
Maybe just change the color of the entry in the book file list to Red, or go 
all out and make it a where the user can configure a color?

PNG directly. That will give you the same quality of captures as what the

SnagIt can do all those things but not with the same flexibility one can get 
from using Illustrator, especially layers.
Secondly, when you export the file from illustrator to PSD, when you open it in 
Photoshop, why not use  the File  Save as Web function and specify PNG as the 
converted output. You can specify a specific resolution on the Illustrator 
export and Photoshop will retain that dpi al the way to the PNG. I do this all 
the time but create GIFs.
I have even tried the Save as Web from Illustrator, but it doesn't play well 
which is strange. Both Adobe products, both creating web-ready graphics. One 
works (PhotoShop), the other doesn't (Illustrator). I would think the same code 
could be used in both instances.

Rick,According to the Using FrameMaker 12, page 481:FrameMaker includes an 
XSLT processor that allows you to associate an XSLT file with an XML structure 
application or XML document, and apply the transformations defined in that 
document when importing from or exporting to XML. FrameMaker supports W3C XSLT 
1.0 recommendations. You can Upgrade to Saxon 2.0 processor by editing the 
maker.ini file.

Rick,I missed this other reference:
The output is created using a parser installed on the machine and registered 
with FrameMaker through maker.ini settings. XALAN and SAXON are installed by 
default on your machine with FrameMaker. XALAN supports XSLT 1.0 and SAXON 
supports XSLT 2.0. Both XALAN and SAXON are JAXP compliant.
Since Saxon is included, it just might be possible to use XSLT 1.0 and/or 2,0.

to me unfortunately … but I have been railing about this for a while now.  
Means that I will continue my “all new documents are in LaTeX, old documents 
edited in FrameMaker” approach. And transition the update work to LaTeX too …

Stephen.The xref is pointing to a specific ID assigned to it, so each time it 
is called it will always link to that xref.To accomplish what you are 
attempting I believe you would need three unique insets, each referring to the 
respective illustration.If all three are in the same chapter why not insert it 
the first time and then reference the section containing the first inset in the 
other instances?

Have you seen this? I have a text inset that I insert into the same host 
document (chpt 3) three times. It has an internal cross-reference to a figure. 
When I update the host document the cross-references in the text insets all 
show the same Figure #. Instead of seeing see Fig. 3.1 and later seeFig. 3.2, 
they all show see Fig 3.1.    The FM knowledgebase does say that a document’s 
external cross-references do not update correctly if the document targeted by 
the cross-reference is opened by a different user on the network.    I still

Craog's suggestion is also valid if each inset is referencing the same 
illustration imported three times.I would either insert the text inset once, as 
I mentioned earlier, or if Craig is correct, then import the illustration just 
one time.

cross-references in the text insets all show the same Figure #. Instead of

knowledgebase does say that a document’s external cross-references do not 
update correctly if the document targeted by the cross-reference is opened by a

I suggested that the printer provide more details on the problem because it 
would appear that their rendering engine doesn't like something...duh... 
similar to what Distiller does when it encounters an error. Since Alan doesn't 
get an error when distilling, he would not be able to do more than he has done 
without some more specific feedback.

Hello all,    I have a problem that is perplexing me.  There are two PDF files 
that our printer cannot compose to get them on the press. They say that the 
files are unsupported file type or damaged.    As background we send numerous 
files to them weekly, all using the same process with no issues. It’s just 
these two. I get no error messages or anything unusual when I update the books. 
   They are English/French and Spanish versions of the same manual, so share 
the same graphics. One is 58 pages and the other 32; not huge files. There are 
five conditions in the books. All but two are turned off.    All graphics are 
referenced; tif and eps. I’ve gone through the manuals and opened and resaved 
every graphic but that did not help.    We create in FM12, generate a 
postscript file and then distill that to a pdf using Acrobat distiller.    Any 
troubleshooting suggestions would be appreciated!    Alan

Alan,I would ask them if they could be a little more specific on when the 
problem occurs.I would expect that the print job is stopping on a specific 
page.Knowing that you can zero in on the page that is actually causing the 
problem.

You can always save the files, or the suspect files, out as MIF and then 
compare them using a text editor; i.e., Notepad++ or TextPad. That will display 
any differences.

Hi, all.    I did a bit of looking and am not sure I see an answer for a 
concern that I have.    In one of my books that I created and have edited over 
the years, it is possible that some of the paragraph and character format 
definitions (and possibly the color definitions, and reference pages too) are 
no longer consistent in every file of that book.    Meaning that I am not sure 
if paragraph format “XYZ” in one of the files is necessarily identical to the 
same format “XYZ” in another one of the files. Probably close, but not sure if 
they are identical. It is also possible that some file may have had a format 
added/removed/edited because it is only used within that file only (like a 
content list format or something).    Is there a way to compare/list/report 
(whatever) all the formats in the files to see where the inconsistencies are? 
At least, so that I can take one of the file and apply its formats to all the 
other files and not break things too much?    
   
 Silicon Prairie's paragraph and character tools will produce the reports you 
ask about. With a little manipulation, you should be able to use FM or Acrobat 
to compare files to find any differences in definitions.

Because of the amount of time I spend on housekeeping, I'm ready to take a
stab at adding plugins that will save me time. In addition, I may be
bringing in a team of 3-4 writers and I want the files to be as clean as
possible. When you evolve to 20,000 pages of document from an initial 195
pages in 2 years, ya get careless at times.

Now...I'm in a very locked down environment, so I know I'm in for a
battle...this very well can be a 3-6 month project and I may loose.

Money is no object. I was able to easily justify a $500 application just to
check broken links (3 bullet points in an email) , but it took 4 months to
work through the process from request to license.

So...if I was to try to put together a shopping list together with as many
plugin components in as few different products as possible, what should that
be?

Controlling FrameMaker automatic link generation

your links in Frame , Acrobat should recognize them as links when you produce

Personally I would go for the new variable option, if the \n, or \\n, works. 
That way you can use either variable as the situation warrants.

{}--Hi, I could use the advice of some Frame veterans on whether a switch from 
Frame to Flare might be a delusion-inspired wrong turn for me, or possibly the 
right way to go.   My company's primary documentation output is PDF 
user/training/reference guides authored on FrameMaker 7. Not the current Frame 
version, I know, but sufficient with our good templates to produce solid, 
professional-looking documents we're proud of. Other current deliverables 
include context-sensitive HTML topics produced via Mif2go and a limited number 
of Process Assistance MS Word topics.  These latter are a sort of MS-Word 
help equivalent that our customers can download from our application, edit if 
necessary, and even upload back into our application for others if they want 
to. I create Process Assistance MS-Word topics by cutting from Frame and 
pasting into Word, followed by manual reformatting (ouch).  Our customers 
(utilities) have been requesting another MS Word output:  Editable MS Word 
versions of our 20-300 page PDF manuals so that they can edit them for their 
own purposes (such as internal training).  Unfortunately, we've been unable to 
find a workable Frame-to-Word conversion process to this end.  I can do manual 
reformatting to Word in our short Process Assistance topics, but to do it on 
entire manuals would give me a nervous breakdown. So, with better MS-Word 
output generation as my primary goal, I've been considering a switch to Flare. 
Its capability to output in PDF, Word, and HTML seems as though it might 
ultimately streamline our processes. As I test Flare by my 30-day trial, 
though, I'm reminded of the many things FrameMaker does really well — things I 
might be losing if I made the switch:  For example, precise page layouts, 
complex graphics, robust tables. To its credit, Flare seems to offer output 
versatility, excellent documentation and support, and a lot of Marketing 
momentum.  Am I misguiding myself?  Barking up the wrong tree?   Thanks for any

I am still feeling the pain of transition from FrameMaker 7 on Mac to the sunny 
uplands (maybe) of FrameMaker 12. But it does give me access to customization 
via the maker.ini file that was not possible on Mac. 

I have searched - oh how I have searched - for a setting that controls the 
default view of a document when it is opened (100%, set window to page and so 
on). I even found the INI documentation for FrameMaker 11, but no joy.

Does anyone know - is this configurable? I find myself correcting the view 
every time I open a document, and it's getting tiresome.

and saving it as FM12.Did nothing more than open the FM7.2 in FM12 and then 
save it as a FM12 document.Printed FM12 version using Acro XI Adobe PDF 
driver.Distilled postscript to PDF.FM7.2 file size=358KB Acro 8 PDF=207KBFM12 
file size=8630KB Acro XI PDF=278KBThis was one chapter of a 30+ chapter 
book.The Acro8 PDF of the book is 3025KB.I can open and update all the 
chapters, but with only 70KB increase in one chapter, I would expect a slight 
increase in the book, but nothing like you are experiencing.

Has anyone had an issue with the size of a generated PDF increasing 
dramatically after moving a book from FM10 to FM12 (or any earlier version of 
FM to FM12)?

I've got a book that's gone from under 3M to over 12M, and that's AFTER running 
the Save as Reduced Size.

Is this a bug, have I not set something up in either FM12 or Acrobat 10 
correctly, or is there a solution?

I upgraded from FM7 to 12 in the fall. When the program was installed, we 
verified that the PDF Creation add-on was not selected. The computer also has 
Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, which we reverted to when we discovered that Acrobat 11 
keeps telling me that I need to install the required version of Flash Player, 
even though I already have the up-to-date Flash Player already on this 
computer. 

In a nutshell, here is what is happening. 

-- With the above configuration, I import (by reference) an MP4 clip into the 
FM document and Save as PDF. 

-- When I open the pdf, the pictograph for the video is not interactive. 

-- Today, I tried to start over with a spare notebook. Before I loaded 
anything, I verified that all Adobe programs were uninstalled (the notebook 
include Adobe Air, Adobe Help, Acrobat 9, and FM 12). I then ran Cache Cleaner 
(Piriform), both the cache cleaner and the registry fix, repeatedly until no 
issues were found. 

-- I then restarted the notebook and installed programs, in the following 
order: 

        - FM12, with PDF creation add on unchecked. Restarted notebook after 
install. 

        - Acrobat 9 Pro Extended (same version that is running on my work 
computer), typical install. Restarted the notebook. 

-- Opened FM 12 and created a document using a stock template (UserGuide, 
Chapter.fm). Filled 2 pages with text, then, at a new paragraph, imported an 
older mp4 how-to file that I had on my hard drive. I allowed FM to Fit in 
Selected Rectangle. 

-- Saved the document as untitled, then clicked on Save as PDF. 

-- Opened the PDF. The stock filmstrip icon was interactive and worked! 

-- Opened the FM doc again, deleted the video clip that worked and inserted one 
that had sound. Saved as PDF. Opened the pdf, icon was interactive, but when 
clicked only sound played; no picture. 

-- Closed FM, opened FM doc. Deleted the video clip frame, then inserted the 
one that worked (as above). Saved the file, then Saved as pdf. Opened the pdf 
and this time, the icon was not interactive. 

-- I repeated this procedure, this time inserting the video clip with sound 
that would play only sound and no video in pdf. This time, the icon was not 
interactive. So in both cases I went from video working in some form to nothing 
working. 

This seems totally insane. Any ideas? I'm completely baffled by this.

Dave,If you think it could be your security software, or even your anti-virus 
software, have you tried disabling either, or both, and running Frame?Usually a 
reboot with quickly re-enable either settings.Since I am running the same 
version of FM12, with various pods hanging and numerous graphics, and don't see 
any of these problems, it sounds like either a system issue or something went 
wrong during the FM12 install.I would try disabling the security software 
and/or virus scanner first. If that doesn't work, then a re-install of FM12.

Yesterday, I posted about this problem under the subject, Cannot import 
graphics.  Today, I experienced the lockup while using the Paragraph Designer 
pod (which I guess is the term) when the pod is part of a tab group (which 
I again guess is the term).

In my layout of FrameMaker, I customarily have the tab group of the Character 
Catalog, Find/Change, Hypertext, Marker, and Paragraph Designer pods displayed 
in a tab group.

Today, I had copied examples of two paragraph tags from a template and had 
pasted the examples into my production file.  I had applied one of the 
newly-added paragraph tags where I wanted it.  Then, in the tab group, on the 
Paragraph Designer pod, I chose the Apply button.  It was then that I heard 
the ding that indicates that FrameMaker is locked up hard and that I'll have 
to use Task Manger to force it out of the system.

My installation of FrameMaker was updated to the current version only a week or 
so ago.  Because I have seen no other postings about this problem, I wonder 
whether there's a conflict between the latest update and my employer's security 
software that causes the problem.  Although I've already reported this to the 
corporate service desk, I've had no response to that report.

The contributors to this are my best source of help in such situations.  ¿Any 
thoughts?

David,Strange. I am also running the 424 version of Frame 12 on a 64-bit 
Windows 7 laptop. My source is maintained in a CMS. I just tested a book, which 
contains more than 100 graphics imported by reference and didn't see any 
problem. All of my graphics are either .gif or .jpg.
Could this be related to the graphic format? I know that a vector graphic would 
require more resources than a bit-mapped graphic. If you are loading vector 
graphics, i.e., .eps, you might just be seeing a lag during the import.

anchor for the imported file appears, but the graphic does not.  I discovered

I _can_ import files as text insets without problem, but _once_, I deleted the

graphic or the icon for the .fm file appear.

A fellow employee running version 12.0.2.389 had no problem importing a graphic 
from a network drive via VPN.

I've already reported this to the corporate service desk, but I've noticed no 
mentions on this list of such problems.

¿Any thoughts?

Check the FrameMaker Console window for font substitutions to verify if Frame 
is substituting the font.If it is, you might want to add the new font to the

in Windows on the C: drive. Each of those fonts is preceded by the letter A.  
Helvetic Condensed is not one of them. I don’t know why.    I see this font and 
a number of other Helvetica fonts in FrameMaker when I select Format/Font. When 
I select this Helvetica Condensed for a Head1 in Frame the heading appears in 
the selected font. When I make a PDF of the book, all the Head1 fonts revert to 
Times New Roman (the default, I assume) in the Frame document.    Can anyone 
give me some perspective on what is happening? I assume that the problem is 
occurring in Frame but I don’t know why the font changes there since Helvetica 
Condensed is listed in Frame’s fonts list. I assume that the PDF simply 
reproduces the font in Frame (I could be dead wrong about that). Why is the 
font changing in Frame when Frame allows me to select Helvetica Condensed and 
displays it in the text? I can change the font to Helvetica Neue Condensed and 
the problem goes away. However, the two fonts are not the same and the 
Helvetica Neue version is much more cramped in aspect.    Any advice or insight

Tony,You need the Clean Import plugin. You manually clean up on chapter in the 
book, then run Clean Import against the rest of the book and you are done.

Tony,You need the Clean Import plugin. You manually clean up on chapter in the 
book, then run Clean Import against the rest of the book and you are done.

Robert,The previous version is installed with FrameMaker 12 as a chm. It even 
has the Endnotes sections.I have the PDF of the CHM. Can't remember where I

Is that the default appearance of FrameMaker's / RoboHelp's Responsive
HTML5 output? To me it looks amateurish and ugly, the kind of bad

too big. On my Android phone, running text is SMALLER than the

Maxwell,It would be great to be able to download the PDF or link to the HTML 
version but both links above don't work.My preference would be the PDF. I

Robert,Comparing the TOC of the New Using Framemaker 12 against the TOC of
the one you referenced this morning (see below) concerning endnotes, there are
several sections missing in the New version.Maybe keeping both links
available would be a temporary fix.Just like I keep a copy of the Framemaker 5
User Guide because the index in the pre-Adobe Framemaker was more robust in
what it covered.

From the size of the New version, compared to the Old version, I would
expect a lot of good stuff.Old has just shy of 700 pages. New has just shy of
1000 pages.That's 300 pages of information that wasn't available in the
Old.I have to ask, why are there items missing from the New?
