adding blank pages without affecting page numbers
I'm working on a legacy doc (unstructured; Frame 7.2); the author is no longer available for consultation. In the Frame file, I have six pages, numbered x of 6. I have a PDF of this file (the previously approved and released version, which I am now revising); each of these pages is followed by a blank page. Let's assume that these are needed -- I don't know why, and there isn't time to find out. Does anyone know of something I can set up in the Frame file so that I don't have to remember to add the pages in Acrobat? As far as I can tell, the addition of blank pages was done manually. I tried adding Disconnected Pages in Frame, but it affects the page count. Hi all, Just to wrap this up, I decided to go with Rick's idea (below). Once I've added the pages, I don't have to think about them any more, and I'm more likely to have to regenerate PDFs of the book in which this file resides than to have to make changes to this particular file that affect pagination. taking an image out of an anchored frame
I see that I can import an image (File Import File), move it outside the anchored frame, delete the anchored frame, and then have this apparently unanchored image just sitting there. I seem to be able to move it anywhere, though in some places it will cause the insertion point to move. Have I come across something useful or something I should avoid? And if I wanted to read what others have said about this on the Web, what search terms would you suggest? Remove * from anchored frame gives me nothing on Google. also working with images
I've inherited responsibility for some Frame docs. Almost all of the images are .eps created in Illustrator and .jpg modified in Photoshop (there are matching.psd files for the .jpg files). These images are imported by reference, and the Frame docs only get PDF'd (no Help, web, etc.). Long running headers
I've inherited this Frame book. There's a master page that has two running header variables in the header, one for the chapter title and the other for the current heading 1. On one of the pages in the manual, both the chapter title and the heading 1 are long. Whoever last modified this book managed to get the text for the heading 1 to wrap so that it looks something like this: Blah blah blah blah blahYadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda but I don't know where to look to see how they did this. It has come undone so that the second line of the text on the right has disappeared. I must restore this. Changing the text of either the chapter title or the heading is not an option, and att this time in the project I prefer not to get into playing with font sizes. I couldn't think of good terms for searching for this answer using Google -- suggestions are welcome... I'm in Frame 7.2 on Windows. When I want to import, say, one paragraph format from another FrameMaker file into the one I'm working in, I go File Import Formats and then select Paragraph Formats, importing *all* the paragraph formats from that other file. Problem solved; the answer is in the User Guide, and it's fairly clear. I had to look up the Danish alphabet, then use it on the reference page to re-order the index group titles and to replace the $alphabetics building block. Of course, if someone knows an easier way I could have done this, or knows of any pitfalls inherent in changing sort order (other than the obvious one of getting the order wrong), you response would be helpful. disagreement on overrides
The way I've been brought up as a Frame user was to avoid overrides wherever possible. I'm now working with a writer who is much more liberal about overrides than I am. We currently work only on unstructured Frame documents; output is PDF (to print from or for use onscreen). Right now, we're the only two writers working on the doc set in question. Have any of you been on either side of such a difference in approach, and how did you go about resolving it? character formatting and x-ref'd text
File A has a paragraph. Some text in this paragraph is formatted with a character tag. In File B, I create a $paratext type x-ref to bring in this paragraph. The character formatting, however, doesn't appear. Files A and B have indentical formats, etc. (imported from A into B just to make sure). I'm looking at some legacy document in which the character formatting does come across in the x-ref'd text, but I can't see how to make it happen in my File B. What can I check to see where the difference is between the two? In the test files I set up, the character tag I used was Emphasis (the default one in my installation of Frame), which changed to angle to Italic. In the legacy file I'm looking at, the character tag uses a different font altogether. So, even when applied with a character tag, bold or italic formatting does not come through on the x-ref. A different font, however, will. Perhaps this is what Shlomo was trying to explain and I just didn't get it. pilcrow before tag name in character catalog
(I tried Google for the answer to this one, but with no luck; if you know how to make the answer appear, I'd be happy to know how too... ) I thought that a pilcrow appearing before the tag name in character catalog meant that the tag in question was used in a paragraph format, but I can't seem to make one appear there myself. Am I interpreting the pilcrow correctly? Might there be some reason why I can't get one to appear there myself? I made the para format, incorporated a char format, saved, closed the doc and Frame itself and reopened, but nothing new in the catalog. taking an image out of an anchored frame
I see that I can import an image (File > Import > File), move it outside the anchored frame, delete the anchored frame, and then have this apparently unanchored image just sitting there. I seem to be able to move it anywhere, though in some places it will cause the insertion point to move. Have I come across something useful or something I should avoid? And if I wanted to read what others have said about this on the Web, what search terms would you suggest? "Remove * from anchored frame" gives me nothing on Google. I'm working on a legacy doc (unstructured; Frame 7.2); the author is no longer available for consultation. In the Frame file, I have six pages, numbered x of 6. I have a PDF of this file (the previously approved and released version, which I am now revising); each of these pages is followed by a blank page. Let's assume that these are needed -- I don't know why, and there isn't time to find out. Does anyone know of something I can set up in the Frame file so that I don't have to remember to add the pages in Acrobat? As far as I can tell, the addition of blank pages was done manually. Hi all, Just to wrap this up, I decided to go with Rick's idea (below). Once I've added the pages, I don't have to think about them any more, and I'm more likely to have to regenerate PDFs of the book in which this file resides than to have to make changes to this particular file that affect pagination. I've inherited this Frame book. There's a master page that has two running header variables in the header, one for the chapter title and the other for the current heading 1. On one of the pages in the manual, both the chapter title and the heading 1 are long. Whoever last modified this book managed to get the text for the heading 1 to wrap so that it looks something like this: Blah blah blah blah blahYadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda but I don't know where to look to see how they did this. It has come undone so that the second line of the text on the right has disappeared. I must restore this. Changing the text of either the chapter title or the heading is not an option, and att this time in the project I prefer not to get into playing with font sizes. I couldn't think of good terms for searching for this answer using Google -- suggestions are welcome... I'm in Frame 7.2 on Windows. When I want to import, say, one paragraph format from another FrameMaker file into the one I'm working in, I go File > Import > Formats and then select Paragraph Formats, importing *all* the paragraph formats from that other file. also working with images
I've inherited responsibility for some Frame docs. Almost all of the images are .eps created in Illustrator and .jpg modified in Photoshop (there are matching.psd files for the .jpg files). These images are imported by reference, and the Frame docs only get PDF'd (no Help, web, etc.). disagreement on overrides
The way I've been "brought up" as a Frame user was to avoid overrides wherever possible. I'm now working with a writer who is much more liberal about overrides than I am. We currently work only on unstructured Frame documents; output is PDF (to print from or for use onscreen). Right now, we're the only two writers working on the doc set in question. character formatting and x-ref'd text
File A has a paragraph. Some text in this paragraph is formatted with a character tag. In File B, I create a <$paratext> type x-ref to bring in this paragraph. The character formatting, however, doesn't appear. Files A and B have indentical formats, etc. (imported from A into B just to make sure). I'm looking at some legacy document in which the character formatting does come across in the x-ref'd text, but I can't see how to make it happen in my File B. In the test files I set up, the character tag I used was Emphasis (the default one in my installation of Frame), which changed to angle to Italic. In the legacy file I'm looking at, the character tag uses a different font altogether. So, even when applied with a character tag, bold or italic formatting does not come through on the x-ref. I'm having no luck with searching the frameusers.com site, so perhaps I can put this to you... Recently, I had the task of bringing the chapters of one Frame book into a single chapter of another Frame book. It wasn't a big task, so I did this: 1. Created the file that would serve as the chapter in the target book. 2. Imported the chapters of the source book as text insets. 3. Converted the insets into text. 4. Add the file to the target book.
