That's great as long as you use DITA. We use DocBook so FrameMaker XML Author
(which should more appropriately be called FrameMaker DITA Author) is useless.
Oxygen and XMetal have nothing to fear.

Also, at $400, I doubt if FrameMaker XML Author is going to be able to
compete with other XML editors out there. The idea is fantastic, but the cost
needs to be around $100-150 a seat.

Trouble selecting multiple graphics

2013-04-09 Thread Bernard Gagne
Karen,
Are all your graphics contained within the same graphic frame or are they in
separate graphic frames on your page? If it's the latter what you are trying to
do will not work. The software was never meant to work that way. If they are in
the same graphic frame, selecting the graphic frame and pressing "Ctrl-A" has
always worked for me.

Really? Then why does the online FrameMaker 11 help say (or seem to say) that
you can?

I must add that I have found another disadvantage to buying TCS4,
especially if you are a first-time buyer.
TCS4 does not include Photoshop, whereas TCS2 does, or did

I must confess that I find it odd that Adobe and not a single reviewer has
 mentioned this.
If you really need Photoshop, I understand you.

If you think of typical technical documentation use cases, RoboScreenCapture
and Illustrator which are  included instead of Photoshop (!!) are the better
choice. .

 1. One cannot print a book in unstructured FM11.
You refer to a bug, which is really annoying, but printing the book in
structured mode might be a suitable workaround for the short.
Save the book as PDF file is working in unstructured mode.

 2. Forget about online support.
Why? Online support always is a combination of official Adobe feedback and
customer feedback from all over the world.
While an official Adobe feedback always will have to take into account side
effects and therefore must be careful with hastily tips and workarounds, a lot
of well-known experts in framers are giving fast and valuable feedback to
almost any problem.

 3. Do without Photoshop.
Most technical documentation use cases don't deal with CMYK  so I think cheap
software or freeware (Photoshop Elements, IrfanView...) should fulfill the
demands. For screenshots RoboScreenCapture (which is good) is included in
TCS4. A lot of customers asked for switching from Photoshop to Illustrator
which is now included in TCS4.

 4. Forget about timely patches
Why?
The Adobe TCS team is always seeking dedicated contact to TCS customers, and
while I hate bugs like  a plague Adobe delivers patches as soon as possible.
O.K. The Adobe team might think about a similar approach like Microsoft in
order to establish hotfixes beside regular patches.

As a user of many programs over the years, what I see here is a drastic
 cutting down of FrameMaker
If you think of licenses I fear you may be right but if you think of the
commitment of Adobe this has increased from year to year.
But indeed to compete with InDesign and Word the commitment might still be
much too little.

Re: Better Way to Assign Master Pages?

2012-05-25 Thread Bernard Gagne
Hi Karen,
As I understand it, only paragraph tags in the main flow (body pages) can be
used to map Master Pages. Anything in the Headers and Footers is ignored.
If that is what you are trying to do, then you will need to change your
tactics. Try mapping to the paragraph tags used for the runing head text
instead. You are using variables, right?

Subject: Better Way to Assign Master Pages?

Hello Framers,

Is there in Frame 9 a quick (or at least efficient) way of assigning a master
page to multiple body pages at once?

I am dumping text from one Frame doc into another that is essentially a galley
proof--one text frame with changing running heads based half on heading tags
and half on other content.

Applying a master page to a range of body pages (or all pages) in the Master
Page Usage dialog would take care of only a portion of my document at best,
since the running heads often change every page and often are not consecutive.
I tried mapping a master page to a heading tag in the Master Page Maps
reference page, but that doesn't seem to work: once I manually apply a master
page, the reference page setting for until changed appears to function, but
the master associated with the heading isn't being applied automatically in the
first place. Maybe I don't understand the operation of the Master Page Maps
table?

I am wishing for something like QuarkXPress' Page Layout palette, where one can
click-and-drag a master page icon onto a page or group of page icons to apply.

Hope I've just forgotten something simple--very possible since I only do this
project once a year. I don't look forward to applying master pages manually
hundreds of times.

Thanks,
Karen

Hi Ed,
Frame 7.0 didn't support Unicode. As I recall, when we were faced with a similar problem, we had to perform some registry editing to get Frame to see Arial TUR. You'll have to search online for the coding because it's been long enough I've forgotten how we did it. Even there, because Frame allocates certain key codes to internal functions, some letters consistently mapped incorrectly and had to be edited manually.

Hi Ed,

What version of FrameMaker are you using? FrameMaker 8 and above supports Unicode. If you are using FrameMaker 8 or above, you should use a translator that at least matches your version.

Here is some more information from my translator.

- FrameMaker 7.1
- Windows Vista Home Premium

- Turkish text is being transfered from TTX (Trados) format to MIF. The characters get lost in the transfer. We found a font called Arial TUR for FM. Once we have the text in MIF, we change the font to Arial TUR and it is working.

- Destination paragraph style font is Arial TUR. Check and see that you have Arial TUR in your list of fonts for FM.

enough I've forgotten how we did it. Even there, because Frame allocates
certain key codes to internal functions, some letters consistently mapped
incorrectly and had to be edited manually.

What version of FrameMaker are you using? FrameMaker 8 and above supports
Unicode. If you are using FrameMaker 8 or above, you should use a translator

Re: Phantom character format override in FrameMaker 10

2012-02-21 Thread Bernard Gagne
Hi Joseph,
Do you use Conditional Text?
The last time I checked (and the main reason I stopped using conditional text
at my last company) Frame creates a character format override for every line of
a praragraph that is conditionalized. It was a major pain for us, especially
with multiple languages. We found it easier to nuke the conditions.

Hi all,

I am using the Find Character Format Override option in the find dialog box.
I am constantly getting a hit on the paragraph where a text inset is inserted.
If the paragraph is Body, then it does not find an override. If however the
paragraph format is anchor, then it does find an override. I am at a loss as to
why one paragraph format causes a character format override to be found while
the other does not. I have verified that the text inset does NOT contain a
character format override.

Any ideas?

I wasn't even aware that you could run such an old version of Frame on Windows

it's an old operating system. Frame 5.5.6 needs Windows XP.

Re: Slightly OT: Frame 10 landscape pages not recognised in Acrobat X

2011-03-16 Thread Bernard Gagne
Good day everyone,
As I understand it, the main problem with Save as PDF has always been what
you have defined as your Default Printer. If it was anything other than Adobe
PDF, then you had no end of problems. It was my understanding that with Frame
7, Save as PDF would automatically use the Adobe PDF print definitions and
thus work as advertised. I've never had a problem with it, maybe because my
Default Printer under Frame is always Adobe PDF.
As always, YMMV.

Hi Art,

Sadly, regardless of the fact that Adobe has owned both Frame and Acrobat for
quite a while, the collective wisdom on this list is that “Save as PDF” should
not be used. Ever. Many folks have posted problems with this feature ranging

few people have posted that it works for them, and more power to them. For

I actually run Frame 7.1 and 8 with WinXP in both VMware Fusion and Parallels.

When I view the master page, the eps file is not visible. Instead a shaded box

Is there a setting that I can change so that I can view the imported eps in the

Re: Changing templates - converting paragraph tags

2010-08-31 Thread Bernard Gagne
Hi David,
You have a couple of options available to you if you aren't against spending a
few pennies.

First, Rick Quatro has devised a Frame plugin that does exactly what you need.
It's called FindChangeSpecial and at $30 it's a bargain when you consider the
amount of work it will save you. I've had it for several years now and wouldn't
part with it. You can find it at:
http://www.frameexpert.com/plugins/findchangespecial/index.htm

Second, SiliconPrairie has a utility called Paragraph Tools that allows you to
create a paragraph conversion list that you can apply to your entire book all
in
one go. You can't beat the $10 price tag.

Between the two of them you'll have your book in shape in no time.

for this product has expired. What can I do to get rid of this error?

Thanks,

Kind regards, vriendelijke groet,

how to get rid of 'license expired'....

2010-08-25 Thread Bernard Gagne
Hi Wim,
At the risk of stating the obvious, did you reactivate the new Frame 9 license
with Adobe via the Internet?
I seem to recall having a similar issue with Frame 8 after using a trial copy
for a month.

Re: Page Numbering Format (# of ##) in an FM Book

2010-06-09 Thread Bernard Gagne
Jasmine,
The easiest way I found was to insert the $lastpagenum variable in the very
last page of my book, and cross-reference it for all the other chapters.
It worked just fine.

Subject: Page Numbering Format (# of ##) in an FM Book

Hello Framers,

I need to setup page numbering formatted as Page # of ## in a book with
several files. The Page Count variable (building block $lastpagenum), pulls
the last page number of the current file, not the last page number in the book.
So, it's correct in the last file of the book, but not the others.

Is there any way to set up a variable that will read the last page number in
the book? Or, is there another way to accomplish this without setting it
manually after I generate the final book?

TIA!
