Lin, it has been a bazillion years since I've had to reinstall Adobe

license to Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS5.5. Because they have "CS"

retires its CS4-6 servers at some point and I need to install these

will I be able to activate them?

It just burns me when I purchase a perpetual license and along the
way, the software company changes its licensing agreement. I just
went through this with Intuit Quickbooks. I purchased a perpetual

[Framers] Please change subject line for digest posts and trim them

2020-04-09 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Framers, remember that when you are on digest and respond to a post,
you must change the subject line and also trim out all of the
original digest messages, leaving only a sentence or two of the
message that you are replying to. When someone forgets to do this,
then the error perpetuates as more messages contain the wrong subject
and are littered with the original digest content (as shown below).
Please help by remembering to make these changes.

Yes, the company user group meetings bring back memories! In 1994, I
started doing tech support for a Silicon Valley FrameMaker reseller. Our
customers comprised almost all of the then major tech companies. I used to
visit a few customer sites regularly, to sit in on user groups, or to hold
one-on-one problem-solving sessions.

The company's principals developed, then sold off, the first UNIX
license-management software, which enabled Frame Technology to sell FM with
more-affordable floating licenses. They also developed a table-calculation
add-on tool for FrameMaker tables, for FM3 on UNIX. Adobe declined their
offer to sell licensing rights when they bought Frame Technology, because
they claimed they intended to build their own table calculator into a
future release.

Don't regret those user groups that may seem lost; this and other online
FrameMaker forums that date back to the dawn of the internet, are the
evolved versions of those early UGs.

The first feature FM I saw that blew me away was the built-in screenshot
option on UNIX FM3 in 1989!

Thanks, guys. I just wish my sewing machine was as cooperative as
Framemaker is. It has been 20 years since I last touched it and we
are both a bit rusty. But the masks will be critically required to
keep our doctors and their staff alive.

If any of you know how to sew and have a machine, email me and I'll
give you a link to an eloquently simple pattern. And if you don't
have a machine, find someone who does and offer to cut material. That
takes almost as long as it does to sew the mask. And failing all
else, buy material, thread, and 1/8" elastic and give it to someone
who has a machine.

Sadly, IMHO, not enough attention is given to the quality of content

the various OpenType features that InDesign can handle with ease,

Many years ago, my Frame 12 would mysteriously crash during book

down to a page containing a Comment marker that had a hard return in
it. When I deleted the hard return, Frame was happy again. It

I use dual 24-inch ViewSonic monitors and have been really happy with

time (Frame, Illustrator, Acrobat usually, and sometimes reluctantly
Word). Make sure you get monitors that have the right connection to

literally read the ENTIRE user manual (the one that came in the box

don't think that Frame is one of those pieces of software that you
can learn to be good at simply by mucking around in it (which is
pretty much how I've learned most other software). You really need a
structured framework in which to learn it, either a course or a book.

Also, I just want to remind everyone that the FrameUsers web site

Ah, I wasn't sure how to check that. I Googled and learned that a

If your Word docs are formatted to use 100% Normal style, then, your
only choice is to manually tag every paragraph in Frame. I find it
easiest to copy/paste from the Word doc rather than opening the Word
doc in Frame. That prevents all of Word's garbage from coming along

However, with tables, I will open an .rtf version of the Word doc in
Frame so as to capture the table and its contents. Then paste that
into my new Frame doc and use Rick Quatro's TableCleanerES tools to
strip the table of Word's stuff. (It isn't always 100% clean, but
you'll be nearer to where you need to be.) Then manually apply
Frame's table and character tags.

Graphics: There are many different ways to handle graphics.
Personally, I find the best way is to copy/paste out of Word and into
Adobe Illustrator. Then import the .ai file directly into an anchored
graphic frame in Frame.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Framers] Are "point-pages" still in use?

2018-08-14 Thread Carol J. Elkins

Hi Klaus,

I continue to use point pages and Rick's plug-ins to maintain them.
Point pages are critical to a couple of rail industry books that I
manage that govern how trains are operated in interchange. One book
is updated quarterly; the other every six months. Pagination must be
kept frozen between the annual releases of these books. Although they
are available as a PDF download, the changed pages in the interim
releases are printed in hardcopy and mailed to subscribers. If
changes to a page cause text to reflow to an extent that creates a
new page, then I must create point pages for those pages. For those
who have never heard of such a thing, point pages are decimal-defined
pages that are inserted between regular pages. For example, pages
102, 103, 104, 104.1, 104.2, 105, 106.

Carol

At 01:41 PM 8/14/2018, Klaus Daube wrote:

For online-documentation there is no need for such a mechanism,
because an updated

version of a long document can be published without ruining the forests.

But IMHO there are still paper demanding situations of thick
manuals, which can not

be re-distributed as a whole for every update.

How are such situations handled nowadays?

Re: [Framers] Using Folders and Groups

2018-08-03 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I use folders and groups as a regular part of maintaining hundreds of
individual documents residing in over 60 books. Some of the documents
are versions of others, so those documents are nested under a folder.
I also nest individual Lists of Markers and other supporting files in
a folder with the parent doc.

If you select a folder in a book and then select File>Print Selected
Files, yes the documents in that folder will print as a single file.
Pagination of the files is set at the document level, not the folder.

It is easy enough to experiment with folders using your own files.
You won't break anything. If you decide that folders won't do what
you need done, then you can simply drag the documents out of the
folders and back into the regular book file. Then delete the folders.

I house multiple versions of a document in a Framemaker folder and
build the version number into the filename. However, I personally do
not single-source the content of these files.

You might consider making one of the versions the "source" file and
then create the content of the other versions by using individual
cross-references to paragraphs in the source file. That keeps the
single-sourced content current with the "source" file and allows you
to create non-cross-referenced paragraphs for unique content.

This approach will not work well if you have a lot of
cross-references in your source file's paragraphs, because
cross-references within text insets are problematic. But I believe
you can build a workaround for this using an Extendscript. But I have
no experience with that.

[Framers] How do you identify an advanced Framemaker user?

Over the next couple of years, I need to help my major client find
and train an in-house replacement for me as I wind down my freelance

so it may be harder to recruit and identify someone with the required
skills. I've built 20 years of documentation for this client in
unstructured Framemaker, and managing these thousands of documents
and books depends less on someone being a good technical writer than
being an excellent Framemaker user.

For those of you who are corporate employers, I'd like to know how
you screen candidates to identify those who truly are advanced
Framemaker users. Is there a test you employ? Do you ask them to
build a template from scratch? Are there certifications that you
require? Do you use a recruiting service? How would you locate
qualified candidates (in addition to posting to Frameusers)?

Note that I am NOT recruiting; that is still a few years down the
road 8-). I just need to start thinking about the best way to replace
myself. My long-time designated backup is also planning to retire in
the next couple of years, so I have to start again to find the best
person for my job. I am willing to train them how to do my job, but
it requires their already being a master of Framemaker.

[Framers] question re getting an old Frame version without a license key

2018-02-07 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I have a friend who needs to upgrade his skills on Framemaker and
doesn't have a current license or the means to pay for one. 1) Is
there a way to download an older version of Framemaker that doesn't
require a license key? 2) If he were to purchase an older version on
eBay that purportedly comes with a license key, is there a way he
could verify the validity of the license before he purchased the
software? 3) I have several CDs for older versions of Frame. If I
gave him one of these along with the license key that I used when I
registered that version, would he be able to install the software and
would it endanger my current V12 license? 4) Are there any other
options that you know of to help in a situation like this?

Re: [Framers] active URLs spanning more than one line

2017-06-15 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Thanks Oran! Having overwritten the original problem URL, I can't
test it now to see if the hyphens were the problem. They are not
causing a problem in the "fixed" URL.

I hadn't realized that hyphens were on the do-not-use list for
page-link URLs. I know that one should not use hypens in a domain
name (e.g., thisdomainname.com), but I can't find an authoritative
source than condemns hyphens in page-link URLs (e.g.,
thisdomainname.com/linktoapage.htm). Although debated, I can find
plenty of non-authoritative sources that say hyphens are preferred
over underscores in page-link URLs. Can you point me to a source that
I can use if I pass this recommendation on to my clients?

Regardless, I can't do much with URLs that are not of my design, but
I will remember your suggestion when troubleshooting this problem if
it happens again.

Frame assumes the http:// in most cases. While your problem is
somewhat different, I surmise that the several hyphens in your long
string are the issue. The fact that only the https:// is hot further
supports this premise.

For troubleshooting, I would remove the hyphens to confirm the
quality of the resulting link, particularly the hot portion. Of
course it will not work, but you will have discovered the problem.
In general, I have found that hyphens in URLs are a bad idea.

Thanks everyone. After literally hundreds of experiments to try to
isolate the problem, I finally made it go away without understanding
what caused the problem in the first place. That's never my preference.

To make it go away, I copied the URL to Notebook and then copy/pasted
it into a new Frame file. I applied the Link character tag and
hypertext marker and then copied the entire string back into the
original Frame file, overwriting the original URL. Problem went away.

2017-06-09 Thread Carol J. Elkins

Hi Penelope and Monique,

Thanks for the suggestions. I print to PS and then distill using the
Press Quality job option. Frame is set to "Generate Acrobat data." So
unless I'm totally misunderstanding the process, when Frame prints to
a .ps file, Acrobat itself really has nothing to do with the
hyptertext link generation process.

Monique, without tampering with the hypertext marker, if you skinny
down the page margins to force a URL to break to a second line and
then print that page to .ps and distill, can you create my problem or
does your resulting link in the PDF work correctly?

links from URLs" option.

So, for some reason, even though the hypertext marker is there in
Frame, it isn't getting processed. How are you creating the PDF? If
you print to PS and then distill, verify that "Generate Acrobat
data" is selected in the Print dialogue.

[Framers] active URLs spanning more than one line

2017-06-09 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Framers, I have several URLs in Frame12 that span more than one line.
The hypertext link contains the full URL, and the URL is assigned the
Link character tag.

message URL
http://advancedbiofuelsusa.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/11-0307-Biodiesel-vs-Renewable_Final-_3_-JJY-formatting-FINAL.pdf

Because the URL is so long, it breaks across the line in Frame. When
the PDF is generated, only the text in the first line of the URL is
rendered active (there is no line break), and thus the link returns a
404 error. There are no blank spaces in the URL. Is there a way to
avoid this other than having to manually edit the link each time I
regenerate the PDF?

Hi Carol,

Redistributable Package that was not present on some of the user's systems.

Please understand that I cannot give any answers regarding your
Windows configuration and what Microsoft updates in any way on your system.

However, what I can tell you for sure is, that there is no automatic
update (or uninstalling updates) in any FrameMaker in any version up
to FrameMaker 2017. There is not even an automated check for updates
- you have to trigger that manually. Situation might be different,
if you have installed FrameMaker in a larger enterprise ecosystem
and your admin rolls out updates to your system automatically.

As far as I understand, this has nothing to do with FrameMaker. My
understandin is, that it has to do with some Updates in Acrobat that
were rolled out. This change has been made to ensure the software is
using runtimes that Microsoft is currently supporting. The problem
occurred, as far as I understand, because the update did not check
if Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable Package is actually
installed on the user system. But I'm really not an expert in this field.

You might want to check your Acrobat setting. In Acrobat Pro DC, go
to > Edit > Preferences and select "Updates" on the left in the
categories. There you can activate / deactivate "Automatically
install updates". What does it say in your system?

Subject: [Framers] Question for Stefan Gentz re the April 27
AdobeGCClient.exe System Error

Stefan, I hope that you can help sort something out that has
bothered me ever since the April 27 Adobe system error occurred.
That was the one where users trying to start Framemaker, Acrobat,
and/or Distiller suddenly experienced this error: "The program can't
start because MSVCP140.dll is missing from your computer." There was
a huge flurry of posts to adobe's forums (see
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2308268). The end result is that the
problem was created by an update that Adobe pushed out and they
resolved it the next day by rolling back the update.

The part of this that has me confused is that I should not have ANY
updates to ANYTHING being pushed onto my system. I'm running Windows
7 64-bit and Framemaker 12. My OS is set to never allow Windows to
update anything automatically. Obviously I'm not using Adobe CC so
any auto-updates should not occur.

So 1) how did I receive the initial update that caused this problem;
and 2) how did I receive the roll-back to the update that fixed the
problem? What part of "no automatic updates to my system" is being
bypassed here?

Thanks for any information you can glean and share with us regarding
this issue.

Re: [Framers] "Secret" Freeze Pagination Feature

2017-04-25 Thread Carol J. Elkins

At 03:20 AM 4/25/2017, you wrote:

My question to you:
- Has anyone ever used this feature when it was still present in the
UI many versions back?

- Is anyone still using it?
- What is the use case scenario that you can think of where it still
might be useful?

Stephan, I'm the client for whom Rick scripted a marvelous solution
for some of the limitations of Frame's Freeze Pagination
functionality. I had no idea of the limitations until he enumerated
them in his email to you. His script makes the whole process of using
point pages a miraculously simple operation.

I write documentation for America's rail industry, and it relies
heavily on quarterly updates to manuals critical to moving freight.
The manuals are printed in their entirety once a year; quarterly
"changed pages" are released and users are expected to replace the
pages in their manuals with the changed pages (all changed text is
identified with change bars). Thus pagination must be kept constant.
If new content is added, point pages must be created to house that
content so that subsequent pages are unaffected. At the beginning of
a new cycle, the book is unfrozen, point pages are incorporated back
into the newly repaginated book, and the process begins again.

The rail industry has historically lagged behind technology, and I
don't see that changing (although electronic sensors are a hot item
in an effort to make rail transport more safe). I'm still modifying
documents that were originally written in the late 1800s. The
industry makes its manuals available as PDFs and they sell well.
However, there are federal quality assurance requirements that demand
hardcopy manuals exist and be kept up to date. Until the old school
engineers and execs retire, hardcopy manuals will persist.

I would encourage (beg?) Adobe to not remove freeze pagination and
point page functionality. (If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.)
But I'm not sure it makes sense to spend research dollars to improve
the feature. I suggest letting third-party providers like Rick
continue writing scripts for the very few of us that use the
technology. That hopefully will meet everyone's needs and promote
free enterprise.

No, attachments are VERY discouraged on this listserv. Too much
chance for viruses and other bad things. So either post a link to
where files reside or, as in the case of Lin's and Bodvar's examples,
I will host them on FrameUsers.com.

Re: [Framers] OT: ISP recommendations? -- Follow-up

2017-03-03 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I'm happy to endorse DreamHost as your domain
host (I always think of an ISP as an internet
service provider--the company that ports your
internet service into your computer). I've used
DreamHost for about 15 years and find their
customer support to be superior and responsive.
They host a Mailman email group that I sponsor
and I have several WordPress domains hosted by
them. They will help you import your WordPress
site into a new install. I think they charge
extra for FTP, and since I know you use this, you
might want to talk to them about that. If you
tell them I sent you, I believe I get a small
credit for it. But that isn't why I'm recommending them.

And right there is the reason for why subscription purchases simply

Agreed. I was badly caught by not know this when I cancelled my CC
subscription a few years ago. My licensed versions of Photoshop and
Illustrator didn't care that the files were created in a newer
version (other than alerting me to possible consequences) and opened
them just fine. However, none of my InDesign files would open in my
older licensed version. I was (at the time) able to find an online
service that would convert, for free, the files to a format that I
COULD open, but it was a laborious and irritating waste of time.
(Plus Rick Q generously helped me out with files that I caught after
the free service shut down.) How much effort would it have cost Adobe
to make it abundantly clear that there was no backward compatibility
to the files created with CC? It would not have taken me long to open
each of my InDesign files while my subscription was still working and
downsave them.

[Framers] cross-ref color for printed and electronic documents

2016-11-14 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Does anyone know if there is a specific color to choose to color
cross-references in Framemaker so that, when printed in black and
white from the resulting PDF, the color is not significantly
different than surrounding black text? My thought is to provide
customers who purchase a product's PDF the added value of colored
cross-references while ensuring that customers who purchase a B
hardcopy are not distracted by a change in the crossferences' look.
Because there are a zillion different cross-ref formats, I do not
wish to create a separate set of formats for PDF and hardcopy.

Re: [Framers] Adobe Webinars Impossible

2016-08-24 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Ditto Rick's comments. Having to "register" for a webinar that I know
is recorded is confusing, and I had to be really persistent to get to
the place where I could actually view the video. In the previous
iteration of Adobe's pages for webinars, I didn't mind having to
enter my Adobe ID because at least the fields would populate with my
member info. And I only had to do it once, as I recall. I could
register for a series of webinars and only need to enter my ID once.

Also, the selection of webinars is much poorer than it had been when
Max Hoffman was the product evangalist. I'm not interested in
structured Frame so the pickings have been limited. I watched
recordings of several European/Scandanavian webinars that were good,
but there was limited notification of their availability.

I miss Max. I miss feeling like Adobe values its users' loyalty. I
miss Adobe not using this Framers group to announce new webinars. And
I hate having to tell yet another Adobe marketer to respect my
repeated request to be removed from their caller list.

End vent.

[Framers] nix the attachments let's put them in Tips and Tricks page

2016-08-11 Thread Carol J. Elkins

Framers,

Although I had not restricted attachments for this Framers list, I've
decided to do so today. Attachments generally are not a good idea for
lists this large. When someone attaches a file, all 1,134 list
members receive it. Probably only one or two really wanted it.
Attachments also harbor things that can harm your computer.

However, what I have decided to do is to add a page to the
FrameUsers.com Web site to be called something like Tips and Tricks.
You marvelous people can provide solutions to just about anything,
but occasionally something comes along, like bleeding tabs, that
deserves its own space for quick reference. For these gems, I think
it would be helpful to provide a download link for users.

So Bodvar and Steve, if you could please email me your attachments
off list, I'll build the new page and provide download links to them.
If anyone else has little gems of information that they'd like to
share on a Tips and Tricks page, send them along to me.

[Framers] RFP for seriously unglamorous (but potentially rewarding) Framemaker conversion work

2016-05-24 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I am looking for a very hungry Frame user who is willing to do some
mind-numbing copy/paste work from a 750-page PDF/Word doc written in
Spanish into an unstructured Framemaker template to overwrite the
equivalent paragraph of English text. It is a paragraph-by-paragraph
copy/paste job but requires a great deal of attention to detail
(e.g., to identify when to create cross-references) and good
Framemaker skills (to keep you out of trouble). But it is still
copy/paste with no opportunity for self-expression or creativity, no
scripting, no short-cuts.

Preference will be given to Framers who are based in the U.S. and are
fluent in Spanish, but this is NOT a translation job.

If you are interested, please email me privately by this Friday, May
27, with your resume and a brief cover letter. I will give you a
nondisclosure agreement, a non-compete agreement, and a sample
chapter file to use to base your estimate on. You will return the
completed chapter for evaluation along with your bid for the project.
Experience, reliability, quality of work, speed, and professionalism
are all factors that will be reviewed.

My role in this project is to supervise and facilitate the book's
conversion for my client (I maintain the English version of this
book); you will be contracting directly with my client, who is a
well-established organization in the rail industry.

The successful candidate may be considered for long-term maintenance
of the Spanish version of this book, which is updated twice each
year. This could turn into a very good contract once you recover from
the book's conversion to Framemaker. And getting a foot in the
Spanish rail industry could be a good career move.

The project will start the first week in July.

Re: [Framers] Autonumbering for a Fourth Level Paragraph

2016-05-05 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I have always found it helpful to set up your autonumbering using a
matrix such as the one on page 4 of the PDF that Robert provided a
link for. Training yourself to use a single series identifier for all
of the autonumbers in a book will pay off a zillion times down the
road. I learned this technique from Brad Anderson at a 2003
FrameUsers conference. Every time I design a new template, I create a
matrix to help me code the numbering. I think this is a far more
robust way to autonumber than using separate series labels for
paragraphs or tables or figures.

Re: [Framers] An item for my FM wish list

2016-04-07 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I, too, use the Exclude feature in all of my books. Most of my
excluded files are positioned at the end of the book, so my way of
handling this might not work for you if you have excluded files
sprinkled throughout the files in your book. I create a Folder at the
bottom of the book and put all of my excluded files in it. I can
expand and collapse the folder to hide its contents. Framemaker
colors the icon for excluded files and folders red, so it is fairly
easy to spot them.

One of the "undocumented features" of Frame--SaveAs RTF is that any

resulting RTF file. One of my clients hated change bars (which are
mandatory for his company's controlled documentation) and really
appreciates being able to see exactly what text (in green) was changed.

I discovered this because I had been using Acrobat-SaveAsWord but for
some still-not-understood reason, the conversion started mangling the
autonum sequences. For example in Frame a series would be 1.0, 1.1,
1.1.1 but when printed to Acrobat and then saved as Word, the
sequence was changed to 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.1.1, totally ignoring the
anchoring 1.0 level. I use an ancient Word 2003 version and I've
wondered if that could be part of the problem, but at any rate, when
I stopped using Acrobat-Word and went back to Frame-RTF, the
discovery of the green text instead of change bars was a happy serindipity.

your library may offer this as well.

[Framers] a few list admin items and a welcome to old friends who are no longer lost

At 10:35 AM 2/1/2016, you wrote:

That was the first message I've received from Framers since March

Hi everyone. There are about 1,200 of you who may not have heard from
the Framers list since last March or June. During that time, the list
was physically moved TWICE after catastrophic crashes and bad hosting
company errors. On Jan 3, 2016, the list was restored on a new server,
but for some reason, only about 350 of the subscribers were in the
backup that was used to restore the list. When the list moved again
last week and was restored using an even earlier backup, there were
   1,700+ subscribers.
So welcome to our long lost subscribers! Rick Quatro and I volunteered
to help list owner Brad Anderson administer and moderate the list, so
there will always be someone to contact with problems. I'm working with
Brad to get the frameusers.com Web site back to being a resource for
the community. More on that in the coming weeks.
Arvchives: And there is more good news for those of you who are just
rejoining us -- the good people over at MailArchive.com have managed to
restore all of the Framers archives dating back to 2005. There were
   over 64,573 of them!
You can access the archives at
   [1]http://www.mail-archive.com/framers%40lists.frameusers.com/
The archives are totally searchable. You can display the posts by

Admin: A reminder for those of you on digest -- when you respond to a
message, don't forget to snip only a little bit of the message you are
responding to, delete everything else and then CHANGE THE MESSAGE
SUBJECT from something other than Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol
   118, Issue 1.
I've set the list so that by default only the original poster is
included in the To: line. You will need to copy/paste the list's
address -- framers@lists.frameusers.com -- into the To: line so that
your response goes back to the list. This helps everyone on the list
and I encourage everyone to do this. It is more work for you, but if I
set the default to reply to the entire list, then many folks might
suffer the embarrassment of having a private post broadcast list-wide.
Many of you may need to readjust your list settings--change from digest
to regular emails and vice versa. To do so, go to

[Framers] Framers List was down but now we're back!

2016-01-30 Thread Carol J. Elkins

Hi Framers,

Just when things were chugging along nicely for us after the last
major move of our email list, GoDaddy (whose servers hosted this
Mailman list) arbitrarily decided to delete the entire list on
Tuesday of this week. Brad Anderson has moved the list to a new host,
Dreamhost.com, and we are all set to go. Again. Hopefully we'll have
no more disruptions to our conversations. Thanks everyone for your
patience. And thanks to Brad for the long hours he spent futilely
trying to communicate with GoDaddy and then ultimately redoing
everything again on the new server.

Re: [Framers] Compiling books on to a CD/DVD

2016-01-13 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Tom, the way I do this is to make a splash screen containing a
graphic and create a PDF out of it. Then on that splash screen PDF
(in Acrobat), I create "buttons" for each publication on the disc and
link the button to the appropriate PDF.

When you burn the CD, you would have your splash screen PDF, the
various PDFs for your manuals, and two more files that cause the disc
to autorun:

autorun.inf which contains the following two lines, where
"welcome.pdf" is the name I assign my splash screen:

[autorun]
open=winopen \welcome.pdf

winopen.exe
(see http://www.duckware.com/winopen/index.html for information; I
can't remember what's in mine and I don't have time right now to
backtrack the research)

For a few of our machines, we ship several manuals with each group

currently, a CD/DVD of each individually packaged in a CD/DVD book
case. I want to replace these multiple CDs with a single disc that
contains the pdf versions of all of the manuals shipped.

Rather than just burning all of the manuals to disc, I'd like to
compile them onto a single disc with a cover file that opens when
the CD is inserted (if the user has autoplay enabled) and provides
links to each of the manuals on the CD. Is it possible to do this in
Acrobat (I have Acrobat XI Pro running on a 64-bit Windows 7
Enterprise SP1) or FrameMaker? All of the manuals that would be
burned to the CD also were created in FrameMaker 12.

Lea, when you printed to file, did you remember to put a check in the
"Generate Acrobat Data" box? Also, are you invoking the print command
from the file or from the book? If the print settings are different

Creative Cloud Subscribers beware

2015-06-17 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I subscribe to Adobe's Creative Cloud service for several products
that are not included in the TechComm Suite. Occasionally, I let the
Creative Cloud updater do its thing, but I keep an eye on it.
Apparently I was distracted this time or something, but when I
allowed it to update all, it completely UNINSTALLED my Acrobat XI
program and installed its new Acrobat DC. There was no warning, no
request for permission. I just lost my Acrobat XI installation and
all of its plug-ins and was presented with the rather bizarre,
icon-filled screen for Acrobat DC.

Since I am right in the middle of my semi-annual nail-biting project,
I panicked. I uninstalled Acrobat DC, located my install file for
TechComm Suite 5, and reinstalled Acrobat XI. Miraculously, all of my
plug-ins and most of my preferred settings were intact. But I lost a
couple hours of billable time tending to a problem that Adobe
created, not to mention nearly having a heart-attack.

So CC subscribers, be careful. Your Acrobat license that came as part
of TCS is vulnerable to attack by Adobe's Acrobat DC. As for Adobe,
shame on you.

Now I need to unsubscribe from Adobe marketing phone calls?

2015-06-05 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I've received several phone calls from Adobe sales reps who start the
conversation by mentioning my attendance at one of the recent
TechComm Webinars and ultimately ask me if I plan to upgrade to the
new TCS release. On the first call, I was genuinely happy to give my
feedback and to answer the rep's questions. On the next couple of
calls, I explained that I had already answered the questions. On the
call today I asked to be removed from their calling list. The rep
told me that in order to do this, I would need to unsubscribe.
Seriously? Now I need to unsubscribe from Adobe marketing phone calls?

I don't mind emails because they are not intrusive and I can ignore
them if I choose. But why must I now go to the trouble of
unsubscribing from marketing phone calls that I never agreed to
receive in the first place? This is ridiculous.

I explained this to the rep and he said he would mention it in the
email he would send me to unsubscribe.

Please, Adobe. Good customer service means be there when we ask for
your help. Your marketing team is stepping beyond the boundaries that
I believe are necessary to provide good customer service. You are
trolling for sales and disrupting my workflow in the process. This is
not the first time that I have received multiple calls from the same
representative asking the same questions, and they simply must cease.

How to Choose the Right Image File Format for Print

2015-03-19 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Here is a really good article (I think) about the various graphic
file formats and when to use and not use them.

http://www.creativepro.com/article/how-to-choose-the-right-image-file-format-for-print
I've read dozens of similar articles and this one stands out for its clarity.

This past year I've been using native Illustrator files in my
Framemaker documents almost exclusively and am really happy with the
decision. I previously had used a lot of imported PDF files as
graphics and although they generally did not cause any mishaps,
occasionally I'd have some seriously wonky problems with PDFs
generated from Framemaker files that had PDF files imported by
reference. Just curious as to whether others are using native
Illustrator or Photoshop files instead of traditional .tif, eps, or
(gasp) jpg formats.

My clients require secure PDFs to prevent modifying them and also to

global text box format

2015-02-10 Thread Carol J. Elkins
It sounds like you might be trying to include all
of the content in the manual in one Framemaker
file. If that is the case, then I recommend you
break the content out into separate files; one
for the cover, one for the change page and TOC
(although I would put each of these in separate
files because I'd want each to start on a
righthand page), one for each chapter, and one
for the appendices. Then add the files to a
Framemaker book file. From there, follow Shmuel 's and Pamela's advice.

I’d also would like to force each section to
begin on the right side—how do I do that? Is
putting in a blank page the only way to do that?

How to create PDF without forced line-break

2014-12-26 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I think it depends on how a text editor interprets ends of lines.
When I copy the text from your Framemaker file into eCleaner or
Notepad++, there are no unexpected line breaks. If I save your FM
file as PDF and then copy/paste the text from the PDF into eCleaner
or Notepad++, I see no unexpected line breaks.

Perhaps try a different text editor?

Dear Carol, Thank you very much for your check.

With my editor, I can see a line-break at each line end.
Please refer to the attached capture (capture_sampletxt.PNG: the
white arrow stands for the line break character.)

More clearly, If you shrink the window width of your text editor,
lines may be broken irregularly (just like the attached
capture_sampletxt2.PNG.)

Do you have any ideas to output an accessible PDF from FM?

Deleting Variables at the Book Level

2014-12-19 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Have you tried View-Pods-Variables at the book level with all files
open in the book? In the pod, select All Open Docs. Granted you can
delete only one variable at a time, but I find it really helpful to
see all of the variables for all of the files lined up alphabetically
and work through them that way.

New FrameMaker Users Guide: Sliced, Diced, and Enhanced

2014-12-13 Thread Carol J. Elkins
I'm not sure why this wasn't sent to our Framers
Listserv. You'd think we'd be at the top of the distribution list.

alert to Framers who use promotional license of TCS5

2014-10-31 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Many of us took advantage of Maxwell Hoffman's kind offer of a
promotional GM build of TechCommSuite 5 earlier this year during a
invitational sneak peak webinar. Your mileage may vary, but here is
what happened to me. I was unable to install the patches, and my most
recent attempt managed to corrupt something in Framemaker that now
prevents me from printing a book and causes Frame to crash when
RoboHelp tries to access linked files. So I knew I'd need to
reinstall TCS5. When I have installed previous versions, I've always
had a safety net of having the same version installed on a different
CPU, but this time I don't. If something gets screwed up, I have no
way to earn a living during the downtime. So I've been very cautious,
backing up everything and carefully reviewing everything. I wanted to
make sure that my license and serial numbers were still intact but I
didn't see the TCS5 license in Adobe's list of my licensed products.
So I checked and learned that the serial number that Max gave us is
an expiring number (end of November). I misunderstood the offer: I
thought that we needed to download the software before the offer
expired; I didn't realize that we didn't have a bona fide license.

So I coughed up the $699 for an upgraded TCS5 license today. I'm
still waiting to get the new serial number. A message on Adobe.com
says it may take up to 24 hours to generate. So much for getting it
installed today when I had time.

I'm not sure what would have happened if I had tried to reinstall
using the promo serial number AFTER it expires in November, but I
suspect the install would have failed. So be aware that if you are
using the promotional license, you may experience problems with
upgrading, as I did, and may not be able to reinstall if you need to.
As I said, your mileage may vary.

Theresa, as I noted in my original post, in FM12 the workspaces are saved in
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Framemaker\12\WorkSpaces

Could someone please tell me where the saved custom workspace
files (.fws) are located? I created two, and save them, and closed
Frame, and don't seem to be able to find them.

Thanks
Theresa

what to back up before reinstalling

2014-10-27 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Sigh. I have to reinstall Framemaker 12 on my Win7 system. Before I
do so, I am creating a list of all of the files that I need to back
up so that I can restore all of my customization after I reinstall.
Here is my list so far (not including all of the add-ins and scripts
that are unique to my installation).

Back up the following from
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Framemaker\12

Folder WorkSpaces (specifically the .cfsw and .fws files)
Folder Linguistics
File consfile.txt
File maker.ini
File pdfsize.ini

Back up the following from C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker12
Folder Templates
Folder fminit
Folder plugins
maker.ini

Any others? I will post the final list somewhere that will serve as a
resource to the rest of us; I've had no luck searching for such a
list on Adobe or by Googling.

Two additional questions: Does anyone know if backing up the
WorkSpaces folder REALLY allows you to retrieve your custom
workspaces after reinstall? I vaguely remember having a problem with
this when I upgraded to FM12. And do I need to deactivate my current
installation before reinstalling it on the same computer?
