RE: FM12: PDF file size exploding

2015-02-18 Thread David Boss
Don't remove "Links, actions and javascripts" and the bookmarks will be
retained.

Unfortunately, although it can reduce file size by up to 70% in my experience,
sometimes the reduction is minimal.

Thanks for the tip. I tried removing everything but the metadata (which was
only the doc title), but it only trimmed about 2Mb off and took the bookmarks
with it.

Yup, the synced desktop/laptop/online copies is exactly what I want. Dropbox
just increased the space to 1TB for the paid version, which is more than
enough for my active files. Didn't mention that I also use it to transfer
files to others. And can access it from my phone and tablet. More than worth
the $100 a year.

RE: My work-flow for dealing with backups

2014-09-16 Thread David Boss
I have stopped saving multiple backups on my system and instead keep all
active work in a Dropbox folder. Active files are automatically backed up
online and to my laptop, and all saved versions of a file are available for
30 days from the Dropbox site. No more clutter!

Subject: TCS 5 no box version sold

2014-02-20 Thread David Boss
I keep all downloaded software and updates on a separate hard drive in my
desktop system and a backup on an external hard drive that I can also use
with my laptop. More convenient and faster to load than a DVD.

Actually I have 3 drives in my desktop system -- a 250GB SSD that holds my
OS and software, a 1TB hard drive that holds active work files, and a 3TB
hard drive that holds my photos, work archive, and software archive.

The "laptop" doesn't have a DVD drive so using an external hard drive makes
more sense anyway (Acer V5-171, really a cross between laptop, netbook and
ultrabook -- 11.6" screen, i5 processor, 8GB RAM, replaceable 500GB hard
drive, removable battery).

RE: Graphics Average Weight

2010-10-23 Thread David Boss
A good way to reduce PDF file size without harming graphics resolution is
Document > Examine Document, which finds a bunch of things that can be removed
from the document (hidden text, deleted or cropped content, etc.). It can also
remove metadata and bookmarks if you don't want them, and even if you uncheck
all items and click Remove it still shrinks the file substantially.

Thanks Syed, but just before I got your message I solved the problem. After
several hours of messing around with fonts, Windows, system restore, etc. I
happened to do a search on the laptop in question (Dell E6500) and found
that this is a known problem with drivers for recent NVIDIA graphics cards.
The solution is at http://laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/xp/178.15.

Weird PDF problem

2006-11-03 Thread David Boss
I am having a strange problem with PDF files with EPS graphics that contain
the Arial font. When you look at the graphics in the PDF at normal size, in
all instances the letter "l" appears much wider than the rest of the letters
so the text looks very odd. If you start zooming in, by 400% they only look
slightly heavier and by 800% they look normal. There's no problem with
printed pages, so I assume it's only a display problem. And If I change the
font the problem disappears (unfortunately I have a book with about 40
complicated graphics so changing fonts is not a viable option).

I verified the problem in Acrobat 7 Professional and Acrobat Reader 7 on my
computer and using Reader 7 on another system. On a third system with Reader
5 the text appeared OK although not as clear, but when I installed Reader 7
it too showed the same problem. And it doesn't matter how the PDF files are
generated -- FrameMaker, PageMaker, save as PDF, print to Adobe PDF, etc.
and whether text is saved as text or curves in the EPS file when exporting
from Corel Draw.

All systems are running Windows XP SP2 and have different graphics cards.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
David Boss
