Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip reviews?

2012-10-17 Thread Deanna Korth
Hi,

We are migrating from FrameMaker 7.2 to FrameMaker 11. In our current
workflow, we create a PDF file and use Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional to
enable commenting in it so that reviewers who don't have FrameMaker can
electronically review and comment on our FrameMaker documents. We then
merge the electronic comments into the PDF file and manually change the
FrameMaker files accordingly.

For FrameMaker 11, Adobe advertises, Collaborate with PDF-based roundtrip
reviews. I've searched, but I can't find how these types of reviews are
implemented. Can you briefly explain how this feature works? Mainly I want
to know if we need to purchase Adobe Acrobat Professional X to retain our
ability to solicit electronic reviews from reviewers who don't have
FrameMaker or if the need for Acrobat Professional is eliminated by this
feature in FrameMaker 11.

Thanks,

Deanna.

RE: Which FMaker version?

2011-09-20 Thread Deanna Korth
Art,

Why do you suggest to upgrading Acrobat to X? I'm using FrameMaker 7.2 and
looking to upgrade to FrameMaker 10 for 64-bit support. I use Acrobat 7.0
Professional for sending commenting-enabled PDF files made from FrameMaker
source files out for review. My understanding of Frame 10 is that you can
created commenting-enabled PDF files. Do I need Acrobat X?

Thanks,

Deanna.

I'd go a little further.

If you're in production and want the fewest problems, go with the
current release, 10.

You really don't have a choice, but the good news is that it's built
to run well on W7 (and does, most of the time), and has a number of
tools and features that make writing life easier. DO NOT try to cut a
corner and skip upgrading Acrobat (assuming you use the full version)
to X.

Do look into FM's new licensing / maintenance / upgrade program...

budget, but we want to create professional results in everything we do.

As Peter suggested, older version would only be occasionally available from
the likes of eBay. However, I went to FrameMaker 7 on Mac via that route and
it gave me no problems. At some point I will try to go to v 8 for Windows via
the same route, when I upgrade my main Mac to one of the Intel-based models.

I have no direct experience of versions after 7, but others have said they
 prefer FrameMaker 8. v 9 introduced the new Adobe-style palette-based UI, to
general derision, but DITA support got better across 8 - 9 - 10.
Conditional text was improved significantly with one of the version later
than 7 to allow the use of Boolean conditions, but I'm not sure whether those
 came in with v 8 or v 9.

If you don't need DITA/structure, consider looking for a second-hand full
copy of FrameMaker 8, but see what other opinions you get.
