Using FM 7.1 on a networked Windows platform. Current documentation is in unstructured FM and Web Help created with RoboHelp. The new product is being written from the ground up along with the new Help files (also in RoboHelp). We want to use the information in the Help files in our training documents (in FrameMaker). We want to move to a structured FM environment so we can use the existing Help files for source information. The current version of Web Help includes expandable text (DHTML). Before we begin developing the new Help, we need to know if FM can import the DHTML information. Does structured FM support the import of DHTML along with the Web Help files? List of insets
FrameMaker 7.1 on a Win XP Pro platform. I have a three-book library that uses screen shots imported by reference. There are close to 800 graphic files in the directory. I know that not all of the files are being used and want to move the inactive ones out of the directory for space considerations. Does anyone know of a utility that can generate a list of files that are used in the FrameMaker documents? Thanks in advance, Frank Harper --- Hermann Frank Harper HIDS, Incorporated 678.525.8420
RE: TOCs at beginning of each chapter
David, There are two methods I have used. First is to use the cross-reference feature - place cross-references to the headings you want for your TOC. Define the TOC para style to incoude a tab with a leader for the page number. Define the cross-reference format to include the paratext, tab, and pagenum variables. The page numbers are updated just like any cross-reference. The second method is more complex. Generate a chapter TOC using the Special menu. This generates a separate file. Import the TOC file by reference into the chapter at the point you want the TOC. Then when you need to update the TOC, regenerate the TOC using the Special menu again. Unfortunately, this method requires manual steps, so I prefer the first method. Initially, I thought that the only way I could do this would be to create a book for each chapter. These books would contain nothing but the chapter file and an autogenerated TOC. Then, I would create a master book that contains each of the book files. Although FM allows me to add a book file to a book, when I attempt to Generate or Find, I get nothing but error messages. During Searches, FM says it cannot open the book files; during Generation, FM says it cannot generate because the master book file contains no openable non-generated files. I can open these books from the master book window by double-clicking, no errors. Another approach would be to figure out some way of including the TOC inside of the chapter file. However, I cannot think how I would get FM to do this. Does anyone have any ideas about how to do this, or, if you can confirm that it can't be done, that would help also. RE: Conditional Pagination
I agree with Richard. I use custom master pages and have a para style mapped to my Final master page. When I update the book, I include the Apply Master Pages option that resets all the final master pages (not to mention other master pages mapped to other para styles) and it works just fine. It deletes the additional pages after applying the master pages. Frank Harper -Original Message- From: seraphim [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Feb 9, 2006 11:28 AM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Conditional Pagination I might be wrong, but I think you can avoid this by forcing the next-to-last file in the book to have odd page numbers. Then, your final file would just have one page, and would make the total page count to be even. Thus, it's the second-to-last file in the book that would flex (adding a blank page when necessary to make the page count odd), and that could be done automatically. You could thereby avoid the dual-book approach. The last book file contains several schematics that are conditioned for one or the other product. Upon turning off the conditions for one product, several blank pages remain and do not go away after saving the file. (Pagination is configured to delete empty pages.) The caveat to this scenario is that the last page is assigned a custom master page (Back Cover). When I change the page to standard Right/Left master page, the document immediately corrects pagination. I prefer not to cob the last page to force it to work. Is there a more elegant approach to fixing this problem? FM won't delete pages that use a custom master page (or, since it starts deleting empty pages at the end of the file, any non-custom pages followed by a custom page). If you have to have a custom master page, you might be able to make it work using the Apply Master Pages feature. I'm not sure, since I haven't used it. You'd have to be able to change your last page back and forth between the standard master page and the custom page, maybe by importing the appropriate MasterPageMaps table (reference pages). If you have FrameScript, a script could switch out the master pages. Third possibility: Put the back cover into its own one-page file. HTH! Richard -- Richard G.
