Can I customize what elements display when linking cross-references?
I am using FM 7.2 (Structured) with Windows XP. We were given new safety pages to replace the old ones in all of our books. There is a mini TOC at the beginning of the chapter that is very similar with three exceptions. Therefore, most of the links do not get lost, but I have to re-link those three. So when I double-click the link the Cross-Reference box opens. Because this tag wasn't used before, it doesn't appear in the right-hand list (Cross-Reference Markers). And the left-hand box (Markers Type) displays only the Cross Ref element. So I click on the Source Type and select Paragraphs to display the paragraph elements in the left-hand list that I can choose from, in this case SubHead. Then Frame displays the subheads in the right-hand box, and I select the one I need. Is there a faster way to accomplish this? If I could get the Paragraph Source Type to continue to display, then I could save some steps in searching. If I select Elements Listed In Order left-hand box (Element Tags) only displays Chapter and Section, it doesn't go to Header, SubHead, etc. So the question is Can I get the Paragraph Source type to become the default somehow? OR Can I change the Elements Listed In Order to include my Header and SubHead elements? OR is there another way I am not thinking of? I hope I have given you enough information. If not please ask. Thank you for your time. Why are column breaks are ignored after generating?
For some reason column breaks are intermittently ignored and text gets pushed back to column one after generating. Subsequently the next xref link that appears after the column break, gets broken.sometimes. :-) Any ideas why this is happening? Unresolved text insets and relinking images
I need to move frame files and get unresolved text insets after I regenerate and end up having to re-link them all. Is there a way to keep these linked, or am I stuck importing them again? Also, we moved our library of images (don't ask why!) and now I have to re-link all the images. Any suggestions to make this less tedious and keep me from getting carpal tunnel? I have two issues that have resulted because of having to move Frame files. The first one is that I have to re-link all the images because it was decided to move the image catalog to another server. Is there an easier way to do this? The second issue is that I get unresolved text insets for the canned warnings we use. I have to re-import these too. This is extremely tedious and hard on the mousing wrist! Any suggestions? Ah,yes. It is not a new window, it is a saved doc. Strange that FM saves the zoom level, I think. The time that the file opens minimized, is when I open a file from the book. I may pass your suggestions on to the power$ that be to see if I could get another monitor. I always hate to ask for things, but if it will help productivity, then maybe it's okay. Thanks! OT - Who should be responsible for proofing?
Fred, I agree with your philosophy. Of course we all try to do our best to write it right the first time, but things will escape us, and there will always be "better choices" that could be made (such as a more common example). The writer should definitely do a spell check and re-read what they have written to look for best word usage/punctuation/capitalization issues. Also check for spacing and graphics issues. We will probably agree that SMEs should be available to check for content and usage. In our company, the trainer determines the order of the topics, so they would check that. I would also maintain that other English-major-types look at the doc for structure, consistency of style and format and double-check for punctuation, spelling and capitalization. It seems that the only time anyone here disagrees with this, is when an error slips through. Then out comes the tar and feathers for the writer...never for the other FIVE people who looked at it. ? -Original Message- From: Ridder, Fred [mailto:fred.rid...@intel.com] Sent: Friday, December 15, 2006 3:31 PM To: d.mossfritch at comcast.net; Art Campbell; Natalie Bircher Cc: framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: OT - Who should be responsible for proofing? What you have described is much deeper than what I would call proofreading. I would put some it under the heading of SME content review (which shouldn't get sidetracked in issues of grammar or punctuation), and most of it under editing (which really has several of its own subcategories). No one set of eyes is ever going to pick up all classes of errors and issues. And if the number of different people available to review/edit/proofread a document is limited, you'll still get better results if those people do multiple passes through the document with a limited scope for each pass. My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel. Good Day Art and Natalie, If you are looking at only spelling and grammar, perhaps. However, the problems encountered at our site deal more with content (complete procedures, no link from the help file to an application's Help buttons, lack of option and data column descriptions, and more) and the structure of documents. A couple of years ago our expert (of spelling and grammer) reviewed a contractor's publication and offered a couple of comments. What the expert had missed was the description of the software application was backwards of the application's actual purpose and operation. Afraid I must say that proofing a document depends upon the purpose of that proofing. Best, Denise L.
