RE: 5. Frame 11 catastrophe, framers Digest, Vol 89, Issue 10

2013-03-11 Thread Robert Leif
This example demonstrates that Frame needs to use a standard format. I
suggest EPUB using XHTML5 and CSS3. Adobe might be pleasantly surprised that
they could successfully compete against Microsoft Word. This leads to the
question of what are the capabilities of Frame 11 to import XML schemas
written in XSD.

Message-ID: 004601ce1ca7$fcadae40$f6090ac0$@gmail.com

A couple of days ago I found out that hundreds of the old Frame files I had
always been able to open through several versions of Frame, can no longer be
opened in Frame 11. This has been confirmed by two Frame 11 experts. For
me in my work, this is nothing short of a catastrophe.

Incredibly -- yet this too has been confirmed by Frame 11 experts -- those
old files have been converted into Microsoft Word files! That wasn't done
by me, since I have never used MS Word in my life, and have certainly never
converted a Frame file into an MS Word file.

I can't possibly be the only long-time Frame user who has made this shocking
discovery. Adobe/Frame management could fix the problem by simply allowing
all those old files to be opened as Text files. This is how I always opened
them in the past.

Needless to say, prior to my buying Frame 11 last fall, Frame 11 Sales
mentioned not a word about old Frame files no longer being accessible.

I would like to hear from anyone who has run into this major problem.

Graeme,

We're running FrameMaker 7 Mac on a MacBook Pro 17 using SheepShaver.
Works very well.

There is a very active Yahoo! group wordperfectmac which offers
SheepShaver install packages and information on more elaborate install
packages with WordPerfect included. It's not at all hard to add the
FrameMaker 7 app to that environment. Not an exceptional solution, but a
viable work-around.

Hope that helps.

It does now. I can't open any of my 14 years worth of FM docs on the
Macs I spend most of my time on nowadays. Something like FrameViewer
would be very useful, just to remind myself of the content of the docs.
Not that I have the slightest expectation of Adobe ever considering
such a product.

FrameMaker 11 in XML

1) Can I directly import elements from XML schemas, particularly, those

Simplify PDF creation for FrameMaker 11

2012-06-14 Thread Robert Leif
A reasonably simple improvement that would save the FrameMaker users time
effort, and aggravation is to include in Save as PDF the capacity to
transfer the FrameMaker documents Page Size including the height and width
and Column Layout settings to Acrobat. The default setting should be
automatic transfer. Adobe might also consider the inclusion of a similar
Save as EPUB.

Re: Multiple Columns

2012-06-12 Thread Robert Leif
To: Stuart Rogers et al

Many thanks it works. Evidently my starting with an 8.5 x 11 and or a
legal/page left something when I changed format. I have been using
FrameMaker 10. I believe that I had done a change from letter to two columns
wide previously with FrameMaker 9 and previous versions without any problem.

I will now have a professional looking poster.

Thanks again.

From Stuart Rogers:

Robert,

Can I infer from your reference to FM 9 that you are currently working

in FM 10? It's always helpful to the rest of us if you are as explicit

as possible in describing your setup and the steps you have followed

that resulted in a problem.

It sounds like either the setting of balance columns to 'no' did not

stick, or your pgf tags' pagination is set to 'across all columns.'

It's also not clear what you mean by cannot increase the width of the

page, because you start out by saying that you did so.

Myself, I would start out with File New Document Custom and set

the page up from that dialog box, rather than opening a blank letter

size document and trying to change the defaults. I just followed that

process and had no trouble (FM 10.0.2.419, Win 7/64). Balance columns

worked as expected, and deselecting it also worked.

Perhaps more step-wise detail of what you have done will help us

diagnose your problem.

Best,

What's your top feature request for FrameMaker 11?

2012-06-09 Thread Robert Leif

Could you please explain what you mean by this:

> From: rinch at Inficon.com

> "If XML is ever going to become truly mainstream, Adobe has to make

> creating XML outputs just as easy as creating a PDF."

The XML outputs should be in the form of XHTML5 and CSS. EPUB is an
extension of this. It should be possible with XSD1.1 schema to interleave
XML elements and XHTML elements. This would permit creation of structured
documents.

The use of XHTML5 effectively as the operating system's GUI would shift the
cost of creation and support of output to the browser vendor.

In any case, the FrameMaker front end would produce files in one of two
open, well supported extensible public formats, XHTML5 or EPUB. FrameMaker
paragraphs would include an element name and, if necessary, a style class,
which is the way XHTML presently works with CSS. This is
a test paragraph.

A further advantage of the use of CSS is that if FrameMaker 11 functioned
incorrectly, the user could fix the problem by correcting the CSS and/or
possibly the XHTML.

Multiple Columns

2012-06-08 Thread Robert Leif
I have been unable to produce a 2 column poster from a single column page. I
changed the size of the page to 24 by 44 inches. Subsequently, I changed the
column layout to two columns separated by 0.5 inch. I set balance columns to
yes and then no. The flow wanders from column to column rather than first
filling the left column and then the right column. It also appears that
often, I now cannot increase the width of the page from 8.5 or 12 inches to
24 inches. This two column layout worked with FrameMaker 9 and its
precursors. Do I need to reinstall FrameMaker 9? Since the last versions of
FrameMaker were internet installations, I do not have a copy of FrameMaker
9. I need to produce this poster for a meeting that I will attend.

Thank you.

What's your top feature request for FrameMaker 11?

2012-06-03 Thread Robert Leif
All:

This is a reply and extension to 4. What's your top feature request for
FrameMaker 11?

  (Joseph Lorenzini)

I suggest that XML include XHTML5 based on an XML XSD1.1 schema, which
should permit the interspersion of XML elements; and CSS be used for
formatting. This would permit FrameMaker 11 to directly work with or be
merged with other Adobe technology to produce web pages and EPUBs. This
capacity would provide Adobe with a much broader, mainstream market.
FrameMaker tables could be extended to have spreadsheet capabilities (Hint
the columns and rows should be enumerated types; rather than just letters
and numbers.).
