Re: [Framers] Weird spacing in PDF output

2020-09-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
That is great, Lin. It would be good if they fix this issue!

It is not clear where it is occurring. Although I suspect it is in Acrobat Pro,
since I am not generating a new file from FrameMaker - just combining other PDF
files containing Source Sans Pro with file size reduction - each of which
independently is fine.

Subject: Re: [Framers] Weird spacing in PDF output

For those who may (or may not) be interested, I tried creating a PDF from the
same TOC file after substituting different fonts in. The PDF generated from the
TOCs using either Open Sans or Calibri were even WORSE than the one created
using Source Sans Pro. However, the one generated from a TOC using ARIAL as the
font generated perfectly. It must be some interaction between the font and the
PDF engine.

I had a coworker try to generate a PDF from the original TOC using the Source
Sans Pro and he got the same result I did, so it is not just my machine having
the issue. An Adobe developer contact me today about this and requested sample
files, which I have sent. Here's hoping someone comes up with a clue on what is
happening and why!

Subject: [Framers] image background problem

A question about an image technique that I've never been able to master but it
seems everybody else has -- dropping out a white background. I've been assigned
with producing a company newsletter formerly done in Word. And though I do use
Word when I have to, I'm 22 years into FrameMaker and -- other than this --
it's usually so damn easy to do these things in Frame.

The original newsletter (in Word) has a colorful banner with lettering across
top of the first page. I can copy the main graphic element (a stylized color
bar with a curved lower edge, similar to the Nike "swoosh") from the Word file
and paste it onto the top of page 1 of the new Frame file, but I need to delete
a white area from the lower portion of that graphic (easier shown than
described; contact me off-list and we can do a share-screen Zoom thing so I can
show you what I mean).

I used Adobe Photoshop CS4 to "apparently" successfully delete that white
portion from that jpg file; the formerly white area of the original image is
now the familiar grey checkerboard. I saved that modified image as a psd file.

But when I imported the new (psd) image to partly overlay another graphic
element on the first page of the FrameMaker 10 version of the newsletter, the
imported graphic still has that white area which overlays the other graphic
element. Which is what I don't want.

What didn't I do or what am I doing wrong? Whatever was done in Word should
more easily be done in Frame, or so I thought.

Help please?

Re: [Framers] Weird spacing in PDF output

2020-09-15 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Yes, indeed, Wonderland and not good! ... :(

I don't have a TOC in my document - it is a combination of other PDF docs - so
I cannot comment on that issue you have found!

Certainly sounds like it may be worth reporting to Adobe ... perhaps they are
monitoring this list. :) Or if somebody with a support agreement can duplicate
my finding and report it.

I am going to try to find some time to test FlexiPDF, to see if it can combine
those documents into a large PDF, what size file it creates, whether the output
there results in an Acrobat Pro problem, etc.

Interesting. The problem is that you're seeing the issue after using Reduce
Size. I'm seeing it before any edits or size reduction is made to the PDF.
I'm not entirely certain the issues are related, but I am no Acrobat expert. I
basically have a joboptions file that I attach and then I forget about it
because I'm not doing anything fancy, just creating PDFs for use by customers.

Again, the text is messed up only in the TOC after I turn the book into a PDF.
In the file with the headings that are being included in the TOC, the text
displays perfectly in both the Frame file and in the PDF created from it.

I've never seen the error message you mention, either.

I don't think I like this version of Wonderland ...

Re: [Framers] Weird spacing in PDF output

2020-09-14 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Okay ... after experimentation to see what I am experiencing.

I recreated the large PDF original with 750 pages from the source files
("combined" other PDF files in Acrobat Pro). It is 53 Mbytes in size.

This _original_ file is fine within Acrobat Pro and FlexiPDF - no error
messages and they display fine too.

However, when I save this original PDF as a new PDF file with the "Reduce PDF
size" option selected, the result is screwed up - even though it does get
reduced to 34 Mbytes in size!

The pages with Source Sans Pro text then get the message I mentioned below when
I read it back into Acrobat Pro! With FlexiPDF, the output has overlapping text
on those pages - messed up display of the page.

As far as I am concerned, this clearly appears to be a bug in Acrobat Pro (the
latest version) that *creates* this problem.

Also means that I have to stop using the "Reduce PDF size" option -
particularly if I use Source Sans Pro, I guess! And live with the larger file
size.

I would love for somebody to duplicate my results ... argh!

Yeah. :)

Back in 1988 when I began using FrameMaker for our engineering team documents,
our Marketing folks used Interleaf. On Sun 3/50 workstations hooked into larger
Sun servers for compute functions.

They kept trying to get us to use Interleaf, and just could _not_ understand
why we did not want software on our systems that "took over" the entire display
and would not allow other window programs to be run ... we used Sunview (I
think that was the name) at the time.

That spell check change was fun!

The word "Pulse" is a text variable in the source, but once it gets to the TOC
it's plain text. I did try changing it in the source to text. The pictures you
see are the "after" of that try.

The font is Source Sans Pro. The TOC paragraph tag does have word spacing
adjusted to ensure that I don't have text abutting the page number (standard
workaround, minimum 190%, maximum 210%, optimum 100%), but since all the other
tags have the exact same settings, why would those two, and only those two,
convert from FM to PDF so weirdly? I don't touch the letter spacing or stretch
settings on the font tab. There are no character tags applied in either the
source file or the generated TOC.

Doug

No joy on this. There appears to be something about the actual word "Software"
that the PDF engine is having a conniption about. The original text has
Software oddly space, and the inserted text right before it also has "Software
oddly spaced. In fact, the "e" from "Software" is overlapping the "P" of the
original "Pulse".

Maybe it's time to reinstall Acrobat. Again. I have constant problems with this
program. Multiple Fatal DDE Errors, an inability to open PDFs by
double-clicking on them from File Explorer or the download bar at the bottom of
a browser, and on and on. An Adobe tech completely wiped every Adobe program
and reinstalled them, and I've even had my machine completely reimaged and the
problems continue.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 12 and Parallels on a Mac (running Windows 10)

2020-08-31 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Thanks, Monique!

Yes, I found that approach mentioned in my archives for this list, and tried
it. Did improve things a bit – the menu is more readable and the icons show up.
Although still very small for both.

I just have to be very careful with my mouse positioning when I click, but I am
not using FM12 much at all, so not an issue.

Also, I am using a Logitech mouse (an MX-3 Master) on that Mac that is way
better than the trackpad (I like multiple buttons – not used to multiple finger
pad access!).

Though, I’ll just have to display the Mac on my large 27” display (it is 4K, so
still will have small menus) to make things readable to my aging eyes.

That seems to have worked well for FrameMaker and a few other Windows programs

Hi Z,

i think the solution is to run Parallels with Graphics setting ’scaled’ in
stead of 'Best for Retina'. The problem is that the FM user interface is not
prepared for high-resolution display. This was only resolved by the Adobe
development team with version FM 2017.

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-30 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
It was a lot less before version 12. About every two to three years, the
upgrade cost about $199 was about what I recall paying to go from version 5.5
steadily through version 11 over the years.

When I signed up for the licensing program, I think (but not sure now) that I
paid about $149 every couple of years. Then, they told me I had to have 10
licenses to renew, so that went away.

With version 12 (I think), the upgrade cost went up to $399 (as I recall), with
a full license of $999. Was my last upgrade ... since version 11 was somewhat
unstable for me.

If you missed upgrading, the new upgrade price for more than one rev back was
$999 ... essentially a new license!

Not reasonable ... for me anyway!

The price is $360 a year. Wasn't the perpetual license $1000 including one year
of support, then $500 per year for continued support?

Learning resources, FrameMaker Classroom in a Book is good. It hasn't been
updated since version 11, but the basics haven't changed.

Yes, _exactly_! Which is what I consider unreasonable from Adobe - the rate for
a single tool (i.e., FM), given their subscription pricing for suites, is too
high.

Now, if you are more than one version out of date with FM, you may as well kiss
that old license goodbye ... unless you can keep it using without upgrading or
bug fixes.

I suppose this may work for those who are willing to consider subscription
licenses - I am not! "Your mileage may vary", of course! 

Extreme point: For me, for the occasional use I give many of my tools, having
to pay monthly (even a year at a time) sub fees, in total for everything, would
be expensive!

This subscription model, adopted by _many_ providers now, misses that important
point (of total amounts) entirely - they assume that their own charges are low
enough for each user.

It is why I am changing towards free software, for the most part, for
everything I do. They are getting _way_ good enough for many things.
Particularly when most commercial software now comes attached with bells and
whistles which the vast majority of users do not use.

2020-08-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
I used the TLP to update FM and Acrobat for a couple of years - was before FM
11 was released, I think.

Had to stop because Adobe told me that I had to have a _minimum_ number of
licenses to qualify for renewal - I think it was 10 copies, but not sure.

Which we certainly did not have (no need for it in a small company), so I had
to let TLP drop too.

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hi, Doug, et. al.

As far as I am concerned, yes! For you, the cost to go from 2017 to 2020 is
likely to be quite expensive, since you skipped FM 2019, once FM 2020 is
released! For sure, If you are on FM 2015 (or older), you have to essentially
get a new license to do an "upgrade".

As some of you all know, I believed that a time of "no-more-perpetual-licenses"
would come to pass ... when Adobe first announced the subscription model!

So, I stopped all FM upgrades as of FM 12. The cost was/is _unreasonably_
expensive if you are _more_ than a version old, essentially forcing a new
license purchase.

Plus, I do not choose to use subscription models for any software I get. It may
well be fine for many people - so what I believe does not apply to you all, of
course! I wish to retain the ability to fire up an old tool - even if not in
use currently - and redo work. With a subscription model, if you are not
actively using the tool, it is costly ... if everyone thought this way, it
would be a significant monthly charge and unacceptable.

Anyway, I migrated all my _new_ documents to LaTeX (works beautifully for _my_
needs - with semi-real-time PDF previews, etc.), and only bring up FM 12 to do
simple changes to old documents.

I have to figure out how to migrate that old FM12 license to a new computer I
just got though ... I am not sure how long Adobe will allow me to do this (or
if now too!). If not possible, I will revert to an even older version of FM -
still have licenses for FM 7.2 for example that does not require activation ...
just have to save all my docs in compatible MIF.

For anything likely to need more than a few days of edits to an old FM
document, I convert from the PDF to LaTeX - the extra day or so to do that pays
off completely.

Again, it is _important_ to emphasize that my specific needs are well-met with
LaTeX, but that this may not be true for you all, of course! YMMV.

Also, I have found excellent alternatives to all the Adobe products I was
using, with one exception that I have to find the time to check out - a
replacement for Acrobat Pro (will look at FlexiPDF from SoftMaker soon - just
bought a copy). Not because I dislike Acrobat Pro per se, but because I think
it too is heading to a subscription model.

I am only on this list for historical reasons ...  ... began using FM on a Sun
3/50 in 1988 (_way_ prior to the acquisition of Frame Technology) and like to
hear about what people are up to.

Regards,

Z

Interesting to read the responses so far!

To me, the instructions are ambiguous in one regard - and people are
interpreting things differently from me.

At first blush, I read it as "remove the covers from the supervisor" and
"remove the covers from the nodes".

And, NOT as "remove the covers from the supervisors" and "remove the nodes".

This needs clarity for sure. When in doubt, be pedantic, as far as I am
concerned. Split into two instructions if needed.

So, version B reflects the instructions more accurately, I think?

BTW, tor me, the grammar in "before proceeding further" is redundant. This
should be simply "before proceeding".

Could be all done as " Remove the covers from the supervisor and remove all
nodes before proceeding".

Which of the two sentences is better? Is there a "better", or is it just a
matter of personal preference?

A. Remove all the covers from the supervisor and nodes before proceeding
further.

B. Remove the covers from the supervisor and all nodes before proceeding
further.

Indeed!

I still receive this list because I am (a) a relatively early FrameMaker user -
started in 1988 on a Sun 3/50, so nostalgia applies to me, and (b) still
occasionally fire up version FM 12 to make *small* changes to existing older FM
documents.

Otherwise, due to the high cost of "upgrading" FM decision by Adobe form FM 15
onwards, I moved away from their tools some time back.

Now, the last one is Acrobat Pro and I am trying other PDF tools to evaluate
them as functional replacements - so far, the SoftMaker PDF tool appears to be
working pretty well for my needs.

My choices - and this will NOT necessarily be applicable to others for their
documents, of course! - was to switch to LaTeX markup for all *my*
specification documents (using a very nice editor for relatively instant and
easy check of the PDF output), and various Magix/Xara tools for image editing,
video editing, and brochures. The Magix/Xara tools are not free, but very
low-cost, and much less expensive than Adobe ... including upgrades.

I am happy with those decisions ... indeed, the experience has made me look for
other lower-cost products too. So, I am also evaluating SoftMaker Office as an
alternative to Microsoft tools that I still use (for presentation and
spreadsheets for example).

You are not hallucinating Craig, I have observed this behaviour many times
before.

If you're using Windows Explorer to add files in to a FrameMaker book:
a. select the View > Details menu item in Windows Explorer, and click the
"Name" column header to sort by the file names b. use a mouse to click and
select files c. hover over the first file in the selection, then click and drag
this range of files in to the FrameMaker book

If you're using the FrameMaker Insert > Files... menu item / "Add files to
book" dialog:
i. select the range of files
ii. click the "Name" column header to sort by the file names in REVERSE sort
order iii. click Add button

NOTE: If you use FrameMaker Structured books, I have observed some occasions
where dragging files to sort the order of the files in the book will cause the
Structure View window to get the files in the structure branch completely
inverted.  When this happens, additional book operations can cause FrameMaker
to crash.

Re: [Framers] Mif2Go

Mif2Go stopped working at FM12 (as I recall) ...

I looked at the source code to see if I could fix what to change to make it
work for later versions, but I also stopped using FM at version 12, so could
not (and cannot) test changes anyway.

Re: [Framers] Book and Doc Templates.

2020-04-15 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
When I did this in the past (Word --> FM), I also followed the same approach
that Lin mentions - it is the one that prevents confusing issues later on
within FM or generating PDF, etc. There is usually some crud hanging around
that could cause problems otherwise.

Of course, now that I am using LaTeX, I have an equally similar approach taking
docs in FM (stopped upgrading at FM 12) over to LaTeX (FM --> LaTeX). If I need
to make significant changes - needing multiple days of work - I convert to
LaTeX with about a day of editing work for the size of documents that I work on
(typically less than a few hundred pages).

Else, I just make the changes in FM12.

(As always, I emphasize that what works for me in LaTeX may not be relevant for
you all. Just the kinds of specs and white papers I write work great in there
now. With formalized consistency that Word is unable to provide.)

For me, it was 1988 (FM version 3, I think?) on a Sun 3/50 (the one where the
B/W monitor was physically attached to the top of the computer chassis pizza
box).

Peter, the first Windows version was FM 4, I think ... I beta tested it for
Frame Technology then. Came on floppy disks (I think I still have them around
here somewhere)!

Side-bar for those who remember the competition: when you ran spell-check in FM
3, it would correct the word "Interleaf" to "FrameMaker". :)

Yes, what Z said!

I haven't used FrameMaker for a goodly number of years now, having moved to
jobs that use a docs-as-code approach. (So Markdown, SSGs [static site
generators], developer tools.) And given the job market and location I'm in --
the San Francisco Bay Area, and lots of startup companies -- it seems unlikely
I'll have a FrameMaker-oriented job ever again.

But I like to remain on this list so that I hear from long-time colleagues,
even if it's just to wish them a happy retirement!

Re: [Framers] What is going on with Adobe Licensing for FrameMaker?

2019-10-23 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Unfortunately, this is essentially the kind of "licensing" and upgrade pricing
policy changes that I expected some years ago when the subscription versions
were released.

I stopped using FM for _all new_ documents after version 12 and switched to
writing all my new documents to TeX ... my needs may be different from yours,
of course!

And I found alternatives to other Adobe products I was using. With one
exception: Adobe Acrobat Pro, but I am testing an alternative for this too.
FWIW, I love the instant PDF output visual feedback I get from one of my TeX
tools, so I don't use Adobe Acrobat for any TeX documents either!

Now, when I bring up an old FM document for editing a new version, I "convert"
it (manually) to TeX and do not look back for future versions.

Because the upgrade pricing and subscription licensing approach for FrameMaker
simply does not work for me (I emphasize: for me) anymore, period.

As an early adopter of FrameMaker since 1988 (on a Sun 3/50), I remain
disappointed by this, but it became time to move on ... like all things in
life! I am still on this list more out of habit than anything else. 

Re: [Framers] Monitors

2019-06-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
If you are *very* serious about good image manipulation, a color-calibratable
monitor is kinda essential ... but can be expensive!

For Photoshop, my son uses a BenQ SW271, a 27", 4K IPS, wide-gamut, monitor,
along with a calibrator (as I recall, an i1 Display Pro unit) to get excellent
results for his photographs. It comes with a light-blocking hood as well.

See
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/benq-sw271-27-inch-professional-monitor,5785.html
 for a review.

The only problem with the BenQ has been some image retention - kinda weird, but
happens to LCD monitors too apparently.

His editing and design work (he is an expert using InDesign) is also on the
same display and looks pretty fantastic: very, very close color match to the
printed output.

Re: [Framers] Does Mif2Go work in Windows 10?

2019-06-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Mif2Go will work through FM11 as provided in the standard distribution, and
with FM12 with one file update - also available from the new location of the
program.

And it works just fine on Windows 10 too.

Side notes:

FWIW, (along with a few other people) I have access to the Mif2Go sources and
was looking to see if it could be updated to work with later versions of FM and
to bring it into recent compiler technology (it was developed with Microsoft
Visual Studio 6), but stopped when I stopped upgrading and using FM after
version 12. Basically, due to Adobe's update pricing practices, I switched to
LaTeX a while back and am completely happy with that decision (admittedly, for
*my* documentation needs).

My own MIF-reader / translator project was also halted for the same reason - it
worked well (to read MIF files) and I was starting to look at doing the
translation to other formats but put it on the back-burner for now.

As a result, for the moment, I only have FM12 on my system to update older docs
- but only if I don't have time (or the work is small enough) to bring it into
LaTeX. That takes me a few days for my typical documents and is easily
justified whenever I am making significant changes.

Re: [Framers] Revisiting graphic formats, png or something else?

2019-06-03 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
For screen captures, using PNG is the best way to go, IMHO. In our modern
web/storage era, the size of HTML files should not be a constraint here.

JPG is for pictures (can create pixel artifacts with images like screen
captures - random dots with colors not from the original, etc.).

GIF (at least the earlier formats) is too restrictive in the number of possible
colors - this may not be an issue with your images, but why bother worrying
about it.

Hi

I create PDF files, which are generally viewed on screen, and possibly printed
by end-users from time to time, and responsive HTML help files.

The user guides contain screen captures in .png format.

Keeping the size of the HTML files down in important.

Is there are better option than png?

Hi, Art, et. al.

I am not on the latest version of FrameMaker anymore (stopped upgrading at FM
12), but this historical experience, as has been mentioned here before, has
been different for me each time a new version of FrameMaker was released.

I had to go try _both_ Save as PDF and printing to the Adobe PDF printer to see
which would work better for me. _Usually_ (and this is not definitive since I
forget what worked well in each version now), "Save as PDF" worked better for
me.

YMMV, of course!

Historically, SaveAs PDF has been problematic.
Printing to the Acrobat logical printer has been more stable and predictable.

well sufficient for my needs!

Ye, I still have FrameMaker 12 for any old documents for which I need simple
edits, but it is telling that I have not even loaded FrameMaker on my new
laptop (now more than 6 or 7 months old).

Whenever I know I am going to do a ton of edits on a given document, I take the
text and bring it to LaTeX instead - takes me a couple of days at best, and
then I am off to the races.

I was a very early user (started with FrameMaker on a Sun 3/50 in 1988), so
this is a tad sad, but ...

My reason was the high prices of version updates in the past few years (since
version 8 or 9 on). Since I am currently on version 12, any upgrade path would
be at full price and I am not interested in doing that at all.

Regards,

Z

Thanks for the update Tammy.

It is pretty much as I predicted and as a matter of interest, this week I also
got confirmation that my licensing issue will remain unaddressed by Adobe.

These days, FM makes a very small proportion of my time and I am thinking about
cancelling my monthly sub. It will be a shame to do that after more than two
decades, but hey…

I have not looked at Flare closely but in NZ, Author-It has a larger footprint.
Most of my work these days is focussed on LaTeX.

Hmmm. This looks like a recurrence of an old bug from years ago ... where the
RGB option (or was it CMYK) would not work for Save as PDF.

Just saw the word from Adobe:

Hi All

Just to update you on the issue with Win 10, version 1803.

With Win 10 (1803)

1. File -> Save as PDF , RGB option selected is not working

2. File -> Save as PDF, CMYK option selected is working

3. File -> Print option is not working.

We have isolated the cause of problem and it is related to "Printer Escape
Function" which seems broken with version 1803. We have reported on this issue
to Microsoft and working with our Partners team to get this resolved as soon as
possible. In the interim, only workaround would be to move back to 1709 version
of Windows 10.

We will keep everyone updated as we hear back from Microsoft Team

In response to an offlist inquiry:

I went and checked and in BOTH places where this option should be TURNED ON is
indeed turned on. (Adobe PDF Printing Preferences and Adobe PDF Printer
Properties > Advanced > Printing Default.) I have had this option checked in
both places on multiple systems (Win 7, Win 10) for both FM 10 and 13 and two
systems with FM 10/12 have this checked and they are Win 7 64-bit. however,
all of a sudden, this single Windows 10 system on which the function has been
working for over a year has jst cr*pped out for no apparent reason. And I am
on build 1709, not 1803, which MS has stopped rolling out anyway for known PDF
issues.

I can still Save as PDF and I can print to a PDF but as we all know, being
able to print to a PS file and then distill it is much more advantageous for
certain FM books/files. Any/all thoughts are sincerely appreciated.

OK, so here's the full explanation:

I can Save as PDF and I can print the book as a PDF using the Adobe PDF printer
(with Print to File not selected), but all of a sudden, I cannot select Print
to File and print any FM book/file to a postscript file so that I can distill
this file to a PDF, which has distinct advantages as we all know when working
with certain FM books. The ability to print any FM file in either FM10 or 12 to
a postscript file on Windows 10 has just cr*pped out totally. Any and all
thoughts are sincerely appreciated.

When you check *Generate Acrobat Data*, then *Print to File* is automatically
checked.
Uncheck *Print to File* and click *Print*.
I find this gets around the system font issue and goes faster with no
noticeable quality or performance penalty.

Re: [Framers] Transfer from FrameMaker into Word

2018-04-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
A good point ... it is far superior to any other solution to output to RTF for
Word!

Mif2Go will work through FrameMaker 11 for sure - with one file that needs to
be updated for FM 11, as I recall, but has not worked with later versions.

For a while now, I have meaning to look at the code and get it working for
recent versions of FrameMaker, but have not been able to justify the time ...
yet.

Particularly also, after I decided to get off the upgrade bandwagon at
FrameMaker 12 - with all my newer specs written in LaTeX. Given that it would
now take nearly $1000 to get to the latest rev of FrameMaker, this was a pretty
permanent decision!

Plus, Mif2Go was written with a much older version of Microsoft's Visual
Studio, and it would be best to bring it into modern revs of that compilation
environment before further work is done. Means more time than I can spend on it
at the moment.

Another thought is that if your version of Frame is old enough (Frame 10 or 11,
I think?), you can use Mif2Go to make a clean conversion from MIF to RTF. I've
never really used Mif2Go, though, so I can't tell you whether the
out-of-the-box conversion will do what you need or if it needs to be tweaked.
Since Jeremy's death, Mif2Go has become freeware; but as far as I know, no one
has had the opportunity or know-how to update it to today's API. It can be
downloaded from Github:

Re: [Framers] OFF TOPIC, Translation Need.

2017-07-26 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Others have recommended companies for German translations, so I will only
add/ask a few things here.

More than a decade ago, we searched for a company to whom we could send
FrameMaker documents directly and have them provide translated docs in
FrameMaker format back to us.

This was not easy, since companies doing translations into Spanish (our need)
did not have FrameMaker, but we finally chose one that was willing to invest in
that tool, they bought their own license, etc.

So, we used Comosa Translations in Mexico (http://www.proz.com/profile/2522),
and only stopped when I decided to stop using FrameMaker and we also didn't
need Spanish translations anymore.

Re: [Framers] [WTF ramemaker] Anyone using MIF-to-Go with FM '17?

2017-05-01 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
MIF to XML may be more straightforward than what I am trying to do (because at
a cursory glance, MIF and XML are pretty structurally similar ... with the
exception of some binary content).

The goal of the MIFreader/analyzer I began last year, was to read and
_understand_ the MIF structure, so that, interactively, changes could be made
to the MIF data (per common requests I see on occasion).

Regardless, if Scott has his program available, great!

It did not work with FM 2015, and I was working on going the MIF2Go source to
see if I could update it.

Unfortunately, my temporary license for FM 2015 expired before I made any real
progress, so the project stalled.

Now that FM 2017 is out, I suspect it does not work. Although I have the MIF2Go

Separately, however, I have made much progress on a MIF file reader/analyzer to
do a LaTeX convertor for myself – my current process is manual.

I need a lot more MIF material to test my code with though - all my test files
are from FM 12. So, I may, someday, provide a completely new MIF2Go equivalent

Re: [Framers] Frame/Distiller Question

2017-03-16 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hi, Fred.

Hmmm ... okay. That makes sense too. FWIW, I have not had problems with PDF
generation in FrameMaker (through FM 12 anyway - I am not going to upgrade to
FM 15 or FM 17 unless someone _gives_ me the money for the cost that Adobe now
wants for that).

Plus the issue is now moot for me, I suppose. Since I have abandoned FrameMaker
for all my _new_ work ... after having used it for decades (since pre-Adobe
version 2 or 3 on a Sun 3/50 in 1988).

My only need for FM 12 is to edit older work ... and, _if_ I have the time (a
couple of days ... for more than simple changes to the document), I convert the
item to LaTeX for further work.

So, all my _new_ documents (very long specs really) are in LaTeX and I totally
love the "see the PDF as you edit with one click" approach of TeXstudio. And,
the consistent look and feel works great for specs ... I no longer need to
worry about screwed up formats either! And, no last-minute faux pas with trying
to generate PDF output that people occasionally experience here with their FM
books!

Yeah, the learning curve for LaTeX is steeper (TeXStudio is not WYSIWYG, but
the semi-real-time PDF generation is close enough). The results are perfect for
my needs. YMMV, of course!

(Sorry for the side-bar whining.)

Subject: Re: [Framers] Frame/Distiller Question

I think the reason for installing FrameMaker after Acrobat is so that it will
configure itself to use the Distiller instance you have already installed. If
you do Acrobat after FrameMaker, Frame will be ignorant of the presence or
location of the Distiller installed by Acrobat, so some of the "automatic" PDF
generation methods (e.g., Save As PDF, Print to Adobe PDF) may or may not work
reliably. But if you use an explicit method (e.g., print to PostScript and then
distill the PS file to PDF, either directly or via a watched folder), either
installation order should be fine since you will be invoking Distiller
explicitly.

Hmmm ... my experience: as long as you stop FrameMaker from installing its
version of Distiller, it does not matter when you install Acrobat.

So, I tend to do Acrobat last such that I have its latest files in place.

IIRC, it's Acrobat first, then Frame as a custom install without its version of
Distiller.

Syed, the message you are seeing does not originate from the Framers list or
the software that runs it (Mailman). Bbased on the link provided, it looks as

Subject: [Framers] Up for discussion: changing Framers' default Reply-To
behavior

In the "old days" of this list, it was expected that a poster would summarize
the comments received, especially any that were sent off-list. These days, most
of us don't have time for that and we miss so much good information that could
help us all. I know that often someone posts something that I want to watch for
replies, only to never read another word on the subject except a mention of all
the great off-list replies.

Related to this is what I find to be a major pain in the a**-- pressing Ctrl-R
and forgetting that my reply will go only to the original poster. I have to
then find the Framers email address, copy/paste it into the header or a new
email, and resend the message.
I think this may be contributing to the propensity of off-list replies.

When I originally set up this new Framers list, I opted to set the default
Reply-To behavior to send only to the poster and not the list because it was
the recommended action for new lists. I'm beginning to really regret that
decision. So as List Mom, I'd like to change the default reply behavior to go
to the list and not to the sender. I realize that this might create situations
that could prove embarrassing if one accidentally sends a private reply to the
entire list. I'm willing to entertain valid arguments both pro and con to this
change in list behavior. I'd prefer receiving them off-list
(ca...@frameusers.com) unless you feel that your argument merits all
1089 of us taking the time to read it. I won't make this decision unilaterally
-- this list belongs to all of us and relies on all of us to provide good
content and helpful advice.

Bear in mind that if I DO make this change, I will give plenty of advance
warning and repeat it a few times before making the change so that we all have
time to retrain our brains.

with Belarc

For what it's worth, here's my personal endorsement of Belarc Advisor, the free
program that tells you just about everything on your computer.

In my case, I continued running a Windows XP platform as ordered by my
superiors because, for whatever reason, some FrameMaker files created by my
coworkers in Windows 7, just wouldn't reopen but I could open them on my
platform -- all of us running FrameMaker 11. Like they say, "Go figure."

So it was only last week when I was switched over to a Windows 7 platform. This
included copying my legally purchased Adobe Illustrator CS4 file folder to its
equivalent location from the old terminal to the new one. But AI wouldn't open,
citing problems locating licensing data. And to make matters worse, the
previous IT guy here is long-gone and had apparently disposed of the original
CD from Adobe which, of course, has the serial number.

I have the original invoice from the third-party vendor and even talked with
the guy, but he, of course, had not recorded my serial number (from its April
2010 purchase date). And Adobe has no record of the program being actually
registered.
Hey! I was just a tech writer here and had no say in how things like this were
done.
After various chat sessions last week with Adobe tech support in New Dehli and
even a phone call to corporate in California with no results or sympathy, my
new IT guy used Belarc Advisor on the old platform this morning and it provided
the AI product key (serial number).

A new (and long) chat session followed with a different (and apparently more
patient) Adobe tech support rep. The result was me being able to download the
replacement AI CS4 files and his waiting online while I did the installation on
my Windows 7 platform.

And yes, I made sure that this time, it IS registered and I'm keep the install
files and serial number in a secured location.

In this case, thanks to Adobe for finally coming through and to Belarc for
their life-saving product. (Oh, and if at all possible, either make a copy of
or don't release any original installation disks.)

Usually because they don't actually _use_ the tools for the commercial purpose
that they are designed for, unfortunately.

To them, such changes may seem trivial, but for people who have "muscle memory"
for the tasks (menu locations, key strokes, etc.) - because of daily/frequent
use - this becomes a pain in the butt.

I have not done thousands of files, but what has worked easily for me is a tool
I wrote that (runs in a DOS command window, unfortunately) converts text from

Since you can wild-card the input for the filenames, it can operate on all the
files in one go! Only operates on text, so you have to be sure to use MIF files
only.

This can be dangerous if you do not know exactly what you want, but it has
verbose output and a query mode to allow me to check the changes (this would be
impractical for thousands of files - but once you are sure of the change not
being too global, then letting it run automatically is okay).

1. I save the files as text MIF files.
2. Copy them into a separate working folder for safety, till I am sure of the
change.
3. Run my tool on all the files in that working folder, with query on till I am
sure that it is working the way I want, then go for it!

If you are interested in this command tool (I have to make sure it works in

Heartily, HEARTILY agreed!

In particular, the use of Control-key functions to add character formats (for

_Any_ later change to the paragraph format will remove all these "override

Heartily, HEARTILY agreed!

In particular, the use of Control-key functions to add character formats (for
italics and bolding, etc.) is a dangerous thing to do - whether in FrameMaker
or Microsoft Word or elsewhere.

_Any_ later change to the paragraph format will remove all these "override
uses" and result in a different emphasis to the text.

But I also do not bring in EPS formats - have had too many issues with that (in

Hi All,

I need to start work with EPS graphics for a project and I currently have
just SnagIt in my arsenal of tools. It has served me fine until this
requirement, and I am sure that working with EPS graphics is probably the
start of other graphic considerations for me. My question is this: I know
that both AI and Photoshop can work with EPS graphics, but is there an
advantage/disadvantage of one over the other? I am considering only graphic
work requirements, no documentation development requirements, so I am
leaning more towards Photoshop, but I just wanted input from the gurus on

Agreed!

This definition: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/exemplified says that the
difficulty index for "exemplify/exemplified" is higher than other words, and
"Few English speakers likely know this word."

A synonym: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/example shows a lower difficulty
index for "example", and "Most English speakers likely know this word."

So, yes, KISS applies.

"Exemplified" implies more than "shown in" ... it also has connotations of
"this is a better way".

Unless that was the intention (i.e., emphasizing the "better way"), when
pointing to a figure or diagram, this is unnecessary and almost a tiny bit
arrogant.

Consider using a more active voice perhaps: "Figure X.X shows ..."

Re: [Framers] OT: Copyright rules for scripts

2016-05-24 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hi, all

Adding a copyright to source code or scripts (i.e., to any original work) does
not _actually_ prevent people from selling or copying that work or using it for
other purposes.

What a copyright does is establish ownership rights in that piece of work.
These ownership rights can then be used (if the need arises) to litigate, sue
and attempt to collect compensation.

The problem in most cases is that, unless the resources of the owner are large
enough, the detection of a violation of those ownership rights is difficult,
and litigation incredibly expensive and long.

And, unless the copying and distribution is obvious (easier to establish in
some works - like code or books), the act of litigating usually does not
succeed too well. Hence copyright violation lawsuits are rare.

Thus, any control of work is best done by explicit licenses - that either
provide the work for a fee/cost, or are declared free (such as the licenses
from Apache, MIT and the GPL in the case of open source, for example).

Even this does not guarantee violations, but, at least, it sets the rules under
which the work has been made available and is an easier way to get lawyers to
handle litigation. Particularly if there is a sufficiently large monetary
reason to do so.

Sidebar: GPL is particularly disconcerting. Since using GPL open source is like
an infection - new code built using stuff that is licensed via GPL also
acquires GPL characteristics and becomes open. So, most companies (including
mine) have Open Source Policy documents that describe exactly what open source
licensed code their software designers can use inside their own material.

LaTeX is unsurpassed in this math and "formula" capability - highly general

Re: [Framers] SVG blowing up Frame file size

2016-05-05 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
SVG is a vector format - very efficient, but needs to be rasterized for
printing and display purposes. Usually converted on the fly (when
output/printed) by tools that properly work with SVG.

It is possible that FrameMaker creates bit-mapped images at the point of
_importing_ the SVG - i.e., without keeping it in vector form.

Then, depending on the dpi, combined with the size of the image, etc., this may
be resulting in a large image being brought in.

Could also be that there is some inefficiency/bugginess in the SVG->bitmap
conversion process in FrameMaker.

Can you save the file as a PNG or PDF from Visio rather than SVG? FrameMaker
may handle it better.

> Corporate standards require using SVG as it is a non-proprietary format

PDF are PNG are also public formats. Maybe you can talk to the people
maintaining the corporate standards?

Z

BTW, a side-bar: _never_ use JPEG for business graphics, screen captures, line
drawings, etc. ... you will hate the resulting dots and artifacts in the JPEG
image! I always use PNG for these kinds of "images".

Re: [Framers] [WTF ramemaker] FM Bug in 3/3.1 patch?

2016-05-03 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hmmm … I am not seeing this problem.

I am using FM 12 on a Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit system. (I am not going to go to
FM 2015, unless someone else wants to pay me to do that … ☺)

Looking for some other's experience before I decide it's a bug or not.

Windows 10 Pro

In an existing book, without changes, the TOC is failing to include page
numbers. The book Numbering properties are set properly, but in the TOC, each
time a new chapter is invoked, the first page of that chapter numbered with a
1, instead of sequentially numbered pages spanning the chapters.

Tried resetting all the numbering, building a new book with the old component
files and adding a new TOC, SaveAs at the book -- results are consistent,
except that when you delete the TOC and Add a new one... no results are
generated.

Able to recreate in multiple books.

Did a MIF wash on all files and the book; no change.

Tested on a second system with the same results.

Anyone else seeing this?

Re: [Framers] Windows 10 "hijacked" my computer

2016-04-30 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
If you stick with the automatic upgrade, just make sure to install Belarc
Advisor (free) and record the Windows 10 set of installation keys somewhere
safe - I sent an e-mail to my personal Gmail account with that info.

This way, if the system ever crashes on you like it did to me, you have a set
of Windows 10 license keys available to do a clean install from, using an ISO
download from Microsoft's web site.

Re: [Framers] Windows 10 "hijacked" my computer

2016-04-29 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
For me, the Windows 10 upgrade process was a faulty ... after some time. Yeah,
the "upgrade" happened at night without my realizing it was gonna happen ...
very annoying.

But after the upgrade, and then about two or three weeks of no problems, my
computer crashed hard and I had to re-install Windows 10 from scratch!

That was a royal pain, since the "free upgrade" does not have keys that can be
used for a clean install.

Luckily, a tool called Belarc (free) had allowed me to record the Windows 10
keys (after the original upgrade) that allowed me to do a clean install from a
downloaded version of the ISO image from Microsoft ... whew!

Now, things are very, very stable - indeed, much better and faster than Windows
7 frankly.

I am using Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and have become very used to it. Some
idiosyncracies, but very nice overall, actually.

Also, I have tested FrameMaker 8, and am currently using FrameMaker 12, without
any problems whatsoever, so FrameMaker 2015 ought to be fine too (with Windows
10)!

Almost all my applications in Windows 7 have moved cleanly to Windows 10
without difficulty - including ones I used to run back in the Windows XP days.

[Framers] I am working on a parser for MIF files ...

2016-04-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hi, all.

There was a tool called MIFMuncher (see
http://www.stc-carolina.org/MIF+Muncher) that people used for format reports
from MIF files.

I have _mostly_ completed a parser for MIF files that appears to be working
well on the sample files I have.

However, to make it far more general purpose for others to use, I need a few
things:

1. A _much_ larger set of test MIF files that people are willing to provide so
that I can finish testing. The Adobe MIF Reference is decent, but I think I
seem some inconsistencies between the docs and actual MIF files ... not sure
yet though.

2. Sample copies of the reports that MIFMuncher used to do - since I don't know
what people need from the files, I am not sure what to output!

3. Where there any command-line options used for MIFMuncher to control the
specific reports/output, etc.? I can't find any documents on the tool.

Anyone still running a sufficiently old version of Windows to provide these?
Unfortunately, MIFMuncher does not run on my 64-bit system ...

If you can provide MIF files for me to test with, please send it to me via
e-mail (not to the entire list, please!) to: syed.hos...@aeris.net ... and, of
course, whatever info you have on MIFMuncher would be appreciated.

Thanks much,

Z

Re: [Framers] Mif2Go and FM 2015

2016-04-24 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
John, I think I found a slightly similar issue reported by you before (although
the error was different: type 1) back in August of 2014.

Apparently, Malware Bytes was causing a problem for you … ? Later, you reported
setting exclusions for the Omsys folders later … but I wonder if that was the
real source of the problem.

Your threads were called “Mif2Go suddenly failing on all machines” and “Still
stuck on Mif2Go, deadline approaching”.

I know you are busy with the particular document you are working on at the
moment, but if you try without Malware Bytes, I wonder if FM 2015 works for you
…

If so, then this would be a good info for others!

Hi Syed,
I have the m2rbook.dll in place.
The issue that I run into is a familiar one, and infuriatingly vague. It's a
"could not write .mif" issue.
I have seen this before and resolved it for FM12. I expect I can do it again
when I have some time later this week or next week.
In case you want to research it, here's the log. The book is well-formed
unstructured FM 2015, cleaned up for online use. It has just four chapters,
none of them very large, and no special tricks.

Mif2Go could not write
C:\Project\ToBeProcessed\DomainManagerUsers\DMU_Security_Intro.mif
Mif2Go failed for file:
C:\Project\ToBeProcessed\DomainManagerUsers\DMU_Security_Intro.html

<syed.hos...@aeris.net<mailto:syed.hos...@aeris.net>> wrote:
Okay, I did a little digging in the source code for m2rbook … and think his
last fix (as per my earlier e-mail below) may work for FM 2015 … but am not
really sure yet!

In one file, where Jeremy checked for the FrameMaker version number returned by
the Adobe FDK, he had code to do a specific check for the version of FM.

From what I can tell so far, the last change he made for FM 12 stopped doing an
explicit check for an exact version for FM 12 and above.

I.e., the code says “if (FrameVersion >= 12) {“ rather than the other ones that
look like “if (FrameVersion == 11) {“ and “if (FrameVersion == 10) {“, etc.
This variable is set by a call to the Adobe FDK and I assume that FM 2015
returns the value 13 (but this is a guess).

This means that he was assuming, for the moment, that the next version of
FrameMaker did not need any special code (he had not seen FM 2015, of course …)

So … I think it may work. But, please try it and let me know! If it does not, I
will investigate further.

By the way, one side note: it looks like the very last release of Mif2Go will
not work with versions older than FM 7 … even though Mif2Go was available for
FM 5.5 and FM 6. It is possible that Jeremy took the code support for those
older versions away, since nobody(?) was using them by 2013.

Hi Syed,
I have the m2rbook.dll in place.
The issue that I run into is a familiar one, and infuriatingly vague. It's a
"could not write .mif" issue.
I have seen this before and resolved it for FM12. I expect I can do it again
when I have some time later this week or next week.
In case you want to research it, here's the log. The book is well-formed
unstructured FM 2015, cleaned up for online use. It has just four chapters,
none of them very large, and no special tricks.

Mif2Go could not write
C:\Project\ToBeProcessed\DomainManagerUsers\DMU_Security_Intro.mif
Mif2Go failed for file:
C:\Project\ToBeProcessed\DomainManagerUsers\DMU_Security_Intro.html
type 5, code -43, at: Sun Apr 24 09:50:05 2016
Could not write MIF file.

Mif2Go could not write
C:\Project\ToBeProcessed\DomainManagerUsers\Users_Orgs.mif
Mif2Go failed for file:
C:\Project\ToBeProcessed\DomainManagerUsers\Users_Orgs.html
type 5, code -43, at: Sun Apr 24 09:50:09 2016
Could not write MIF file.

Mif2Go failed for file:
type 6, code 0, at: Sun Apr 24 09:50:11 2016
Cancelled by user.

This means that he was assuming, for the moment, that the next version of

So … I think it may work. But, please try it and let me know! If it does not, I

John, that would be great, thanks!

And just to remind people of the specifics: there is a zip file
“m2rbook115.zip” in the mif2go.com<http://mif2go.com> downloads site, under
“Beta Components”.

This ZIP contains a single DLL file called “m2rbook.dll” that must replace the
older one (typically in “C:\Program Files
(x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker12\fminit\Plugins”) for FM 12 to work.

I am not sure why this simple fix works yet. The code contents are essentially
identical to the old one … the properties on the version number are the only
difference that I can see with a byte-for-byte comparison.

Some investigation is needed to see if this will work for FM 2015 or needs
another fix. Since I am not running FM 2015, I cannot test this.

Unfortunately, yes.

Over the past year, I have started looking into migrating it to a more recent
version of Visual Studio rather than reload the very old version of Visual
Studio 6 that this was last compiled with.

The code is a bit tortuous in places, so to speak ... needs more understanding
of the thinking that went into it. It needs more effort than I have been able
to put into it just yet due to some medical issues at home.

But, this summer, I hope to make progress ...

And, to everyone, I highly, HIGHLY recommend BooKVars.

This is, by far, the most used tool in my editing of FrameMaker documents,
since I use a ton of variables in my specs to keep values consistent everywhere
in these documents.

Scott has incorporated asks of mine for improvement, so I am pleased to see
this release for sure!

FWIW, though, I would prefer to let Windows reset back to the default printer

2016-04-11 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Yeah ... assuming that I am doing it right, I see the same issue with
FrameMaker 12 .. no printer setting stickiness in standard FrameMaker.

So, for me too, SetPrint is still the working method! :)

Yes!

And, there is a FrameMaker plug-in that can automate this while using
FrameMaker - very easy to install and not worry about this specific issue.

Free from Sundorne: http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm

Callable from FrameScript too.

Re: [Framers] preventing 2-word product name from line breaks ?

2016-04-06 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
FWIW, for me, variables work best for this purpose ... that way, an occasional
search and replace (perhaps at the end) works wonders.

This makes the "product name change" problem _far_ less of an issue in the long
run!

Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker2015

2016-03-31 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hmmm, for my captures, this is not an issue - for me, fixing the resolution
later is trivial. Assuming I need to do so.

Screen capture (any tool) always takes the pixels you want (regardless of that
setting in later versions of SnagIt), so this "setting" is just an
interpretation of how the pixels should be converted to inches when displayed,
I suppose.

I guess the main issue in that thread appears to be the slowdown in the
work-flow, since the file needs to be touched in an image editor to change that
setting.

Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker 2015

I simply use SnagIt (think I am on version 12 point something) directly ... not
as a plug-in. I didn't know you could do that with it and FrameMaker in the
first place.

SnagIt itself works very, very well for my screen captures.

Re: [Framers] Win7 versus Win10 with FM2015 as of January 2016

2016-01-13 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
FM2015 will run fine on Windows 10. Indeed, I am using the older FM12 on
Windows 10 without issues either.

My setup is Windows 10 Pro on 3 year old high-end laptop, 64 bit, with tons of
memory.

bullet" and load FM2015 on Win10, or would it be more prudent to demand that
Dell provide me with a Win7 CD boot disk before loading FM2015?

Re: [Framers] Mif2Go conversion to Word

2016-01-05 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Key for making it work in FrameMaker 12 (and probably FrameMaker 2015 too? but
I have not tried that version), is the one file that needs to be changed. It is
described in an older post here or at the website perhaps.

Support for FM12/2015 is, from what I understand, not great. I believe that
some have successfully been able to get it to work. Check the mif2go Yahoo
group for details.

If you want to help with the future development of Mif2Go, you can download the
source from GitHub ..

Please refresh my memory or dispel my ignorance about how and where I may
obtain Mif2Go for use with FrameMaker 12 and FrameMaker 2015 Release. This, to
convert into Word files.

As I recall, Mif2Go and its close relatives were to have become open source
after Jeremy died.

RE: Importing clear, sharp images

2015-06-18 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
I only use PNG with screen captures ... the (older) standard GIF color size
(used to be set of 256 colors ... has that changed?) would be way too limiting
in most cases (not all).

Any drawn image with gradients - which are not always obvious - or pictures,
will result in a poor quality. And, PNG will be far better for these reasons.

We use PNG or GIF formats to get the sharpest screen captures. We use PDF for
all other graphics.

Images often appear choppy in FrameMaker, but come out better in the PDF.
The way they look in FrameMaker is just like a preview. Is your
output PDF, online help, or both?

Can anyone point me toward a good resource (or just tell me if it's

reference in FrameMaker? I'm working on a doc right now in which I'm

I know that TIFF is the preferred format (not sure about PSD but many

I'm happy to provide more information about what I'm doing if needed.

RE: Importing clear, sharp images

2015-06-17 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Same here.

I think SnagIt is an excellent tool and well worth the money.

If the image/drawing I want to capture is large (or vectorized), I try to
maximise it as much as reasonable (native, without jaggies) on the 1920x1200
screen I use before the screen capture.

This makes the PNG capture occur at a good high resolution – i.e., the source
quality is better – so that letting FrameMaker downsize it to fit still makes
it look good.

I use SnagIt to capture all my images as PNGs, then I import by reference at
160dpi and they look great.
