ID is limited to glyphs too. However, there is a great, inexpensive plugin
to Illustrator and Photoshop to create a font called FontSelf. One could
then use the font to create bullet lists in either ID or Frame.

Re: [Framers] Frame vs InDesign

2021-11-19 Thread creamertraininglists
I haven't updated this info in ages, but take a look at this PDF:
.
Some of the info may be out of date, but a lot of the features are basically
the same.

I specialize in training on both programs, so here is my 2 cents...

  * Most importantly: Can InDesign generate good PDF files, with working
links?
Yes

  * Is InDesign good for large documents (100-160 pages), with TOCs, and
lots of internal and external cross-references?
Yes (100-160 is not really considered a large document by either program)

  * Can I transfer my existing paragraph and character styles from Frame
to InDesign?
Frame to RTF/Word to InDesign
Or DTPtools.com conversion service

  * Can I import a Frame book into InDesign?
No. (ID's book feature is functional but not match for Frame's; however,
I've created 1000-page books in ID).

Other notes
Excellent HTML5 output can be had in ID with the In5 plugin (extra cost).
ID's XML features are weak when compared to Frame.

Re: [Framers] activation dialog for old Adobe software

2021-11-11 Thread creamertraininglists
Being that the software came out in 2006, the activation servers are
probably shut down.

This is the current customer service number: 1 (800) 833-6687.
I suspect you are going to have to go up the food chain until you get
someone that can help you.

This is for Acrobat Standard 8.0 but I figure the issue's the same as for
FrameMaker.

I've had this on my Windows 7 (now 10) system for four years without
trouble. A few weeks ago I installed Acrobat Reader because some downloaded
PDFs are not compatible. Today I got an activation dialog that seems to be
unable to connect to the expected server. The phone number provided as an
alternative (866 772 3623) seems to be dead.

How do I deal with this?

Just the default install.

Sometimes it's good to uninstall and reinstall Acrobat. I notice it can get
bloated with incremental updates.

Just curious...
How long does it take to open just Acrobat with no PDF vs double-clicking a
file?

The FM PDF help file is almost unusable in the current version because of
long loading and scrolling times.
If you have the full Acrobat version, use this workaround: remove all PDF
tags and scrolling, loading and searching etc. works like a charm.

So what? I don’t understand the purpose of your post. I was not
contradicting the previous post—just adding more info for others.

As someone who used more than just Frame, I felt it would be useful to know
how to report bugs or request features for other Adobe product.

However, if you select FrameMaker in the products drop-down you end up at
https://tracker.adobe.com
which was proposed earlyer.
Here you can either "Add a Bug" or "Request Feature" - as told before.

Re: [Framers] version numbering and document control

2021-02-13 Thread creamertraininglists
I would endorse Mike's suggestion, however, I would go further based on a
couple of factors...
--Your email mentioned "more than one update...with a month", so could there
be more than one released update per month?
--Are updating the entire book version, chapter versions, or only affected
pages?

If the date of the update is important, you might want to switch to the
international date code: 20210213 or 2021.02.13. (Presumedly, you will not
have more than one release per day!)
--If book version, you could use a global variable in the header or footer.
--If chapter versions, you could create a variable per chapter.
--If affected pages, you could add an separate flow to your master pages and
enter in the date code in the new flow. Set the style to start on the next
page so you can return through the pages quickly. Unfortunately, you (most
likely) would need to mark pages that simply had text-flow changes.

In addition to the above, you use change bars to indicate edited or added
text. Just clear them out at a given point in time, such as every month.
That would help the readers focus on the actual changes.

Adding a date code could start immediately--I don't think too many readers
would get confused by a date of release in the footer. Initially, I would
add the date code to every page with a note that pages without a date code
should be considered "out of date".

Subject: Re: [Framers] version numbering and document control

It seems like the easy solution would be simply to replace month and
year with year and an incremented number: 2021-1, 2021-2, 2021-3 ...
2022-1, etc. If you're worried about confusion with the old system,
maybe wait to the beginning of the next year to start the change.
