RE: Very slow when printing either to Adobe PDF or Print To File

2010-05-03 Thread kblake2
Just a quick update.

As it turns out, this issue was indeed related to the order of install for
FM 9 and my version of Acrobat. When I reinstalled Acrobat, Save As PDF
started working, and the Adobe PDF printer performance improved
significantly.

Thank you, Richard, for reminding me about Acrobat being installed last.
That was the key. Thanks also to the other folks who responded with
advice.

I'm copying the list in my reply because others may have more/better
insights -- wisdom of the crowd, you know.

I don't know anything about PDFCreator, but I'd be surprised if your
coworker's PDFs weren't missing the features that the integration of
Distiller with FM provides -- like working hyperlinks for
cross-references, the TOC, and index, and bookmarks created from the
paragraphs selected in FM's PDF Setup.

Adobe PDF is a non-hardware-specific printer driver designed for creating
PDFs. Using a hardware-specific printer driver (e.g., HP or Ricoh --
whatever your company uses as a physical printer) is a bad idea, as
Adobe's Dov Isaacs and others have stated many times.

Regarding the order of FM and Acrobat installs, I think you may be on
to something. It hadn't dawned on me that when I installed FM 9 last
year, I was installing it *after* Acrobat 8 which was installed 2 years
ago. I'm wondering if that is what is causing my problems. I didn't
start using FM 9 in any significant way until just a few weeks
agovery close to the time when our printers were switched out.
Prior to that, I was using FM 7 with the previous printers, and now I
find I have problems with both FM 7 and FM 9 as I use these new
printers to make PDFs. Once again, I can make a PDF as always, it's
just really, really slow now. I'm not convinced the new printer drivers
innocent in all of this, but maybe it is a perfect storm of printer
drivers and an Acrobat/FM problem. I'll have to see what I can do about
reinstalling Acrobat. I'm in the middle of a release right now so I
don't want to mess with stuff too much.

Regarding Adobe PDF, I do see it in my Printers and Faxes, and the port
is indeed set to My Documents\*.pdf.

I really, really appreciate your insights. I'm a bit embarrassed to
have used FM all these years yet still be ignorant of the inner
workings. It has all worked flawlessly up to this point so I never had
a reason to check under the hood.

If I were you, as soon as time permits, I'd reinstall Acrobat. And use
Adobe PDF as the printer. That alone may solve the problem.

I don't know if there are any issues or tips for using FM 9 with Acro 8 --
maybe someone else does. But you shouldn't be having problems with using
FM 7 and Acro 8 -- as long as both are properly installed and you set your
printer in FM to Adobe PDF.

Good luck!

2010-04-22 Thread rinch
Kathy,

You wrote, Richard, regarding your suggestion of using Save As PDFit
didn't work for me. It tells me I need Distiller 5.0.5 or higher, and that
confuses me because I've got Distiller v8 that came with Acrobat v8.

I haven't a clue. I've got TCS2 installed, and I'm running FM9.0p250 with
Acrobat Pro Extended 9.3.2 on a Win XP SP3 Dell workstation with 4 GB RAM.
Initially I had problems with Save As PDF (my first page graphics didn't
come through to the PDF). But, I installed the Microsoft HotFix (which is
supposed to be for text problems) and my graphics PDFd perfectly after
that. My Save As PDF creates wonderful PDFs, and I'm impressed with how
fast it works given my graphics intensive manuals (some in the 500 page
range).

I'm sorry to hear you are having so much difficulty, but I've no idea how
to help you.

Regards,
Richard

Re: Very slow when printing either to Adobe PDF or Print To File

2010-04-22 Thread kblake2
Thank you for your rapid responses to my post. I apologize for the delay
in my response. Luckily I didn't have any need to make pdfs in the
interim.

I do finally have a solution in place that seems to be working for now. My
IT dept told me to install PDFCreator. The only hitch is that I still have
to go through the .ps file process to achieve the 508-accessible
requirement for some of our docs. I tried going straight to PDF with
PDFCreator, but I got errors about Unicode mapping when I ran the
Accessibility checker within Acrobat 8. So...it's ok with me if I have to
make a .ps file first. I'll gladly do that if it will help me side-step
508 issues.

Regards,
Richard

Why are you using print to file? FM9p250 Save As PDF works great as long
as you have chosen the Adobe PDF printer instance (install SetPrint).

I'd avoid universal PS drivers and especially HP printer drivers like the
plague. They will only give you headaches.

In FM9, Save As PDF with the Adobe PDF printer active is the way to go.
You may also need to install the MicrosoftHotFix if you are running
WIndows XP. I've got HotFix and SetPrint installed on my WinXP system and
routinely create PDFs of 500-600 page graphics intensive manuals with no
problems using Save As PDF. This process is much better, and faster, than
my old FM6 days when I, too, used Print To File.

Very slow when printing either to Adobe PDF or Print To File

I'm not sure if anyone else has previously reported this issue as I visit
this list infrequently. I apologize if I am bringing up an old issue.

I'm using Frame 9.0p250, and I have a coworker using Frame 7. Our normal
process is to create PDFs by using the Print To File option, then
distilling the .ps file. It has worked perfectly since forever, and we're
ok with using that two-step process. Now, our corporate IT dept has
installed new HP printers with the Universal PS driver (v5.0) and it now
takes much, much longer to create a .ps file. Before it would take about
20 seconds to create a .ps file for the entire 300 page manual. Now, it
takes about 5 seconds *per page* to create a .ps file. Gaaah! When we used

these printers for the first time, we of course got a warning about
unavailable fonts. No big dealwe've seen that before, so we let the
font substitution happen, figuring that the new printer had slightly
different font names and the substitution was ok. We're wondering if that
corrupted our files somehow? Could the problem be the Universal PS driver?

It doesn't matter if we're using FM 7 or FM 9, whether we print to Adobe
PDF or make a .ps file with the HP printersall those have the same
resultslow, slow, slow .ps file creation. I've seen folks complaining
on the Web about the HP universal driver. Is that part of the problem?

I have both FM 7 and FM 9 installed on my PC (because it didn't force me
to uninstall 7 before installing 9). The really strange part is this...I
can go out on the network, find other manuals that aren't yet converted to

FM 9, open those files and never get the font warning, and I can make a
.ps file in FM 7 without the big slow down. Yet my coworker, who is using
only FM7, continues to have the slow .ps file problem.

All the printer and driver properties are locked down by IT, so I can't
adjust any of those settings. Do you have any suggestions?

PDFCreator appears to be an open-source project, and I'm sure it's fine for
what it does. But is your IT dept. aware that you have an Adobe Acrobat 8
license? They should be helping you troubleshoot the problem with Acrobat 8,
not suggesting you discard it for some freebie alternative.

That message strongly suggests that FM isn't aware of your Acrobat Distiller
and/or Adobe PDF printer installation. By any chance, was Acrobat installed
before FM? Have you tried reinstalling/repairing Acrobat? In Printers and
Faxes, do you have an Adobe PDF printer instance? Is its port set to My
Documents\*.pdf?
