Re: master index of multiple book

2011-09-23 Thread Milton, Cynthia
I concur. In my last job I did exactly that (so engineers could find the doc
they needed easily). The uber-book contained over 300 separate docs, and
another 400-page big book as a sub-book.

When you generate the index, make sure you DO NOT UPDATE ANY NUMBERING, as
otherwise everything gets screwed up. To differentiate index entries for the
individual docs and the big book, I added a meaningful prefix to the numbering,
so the big book entries were H- and the individual doc entries were
W-.

I used normal index markers from the big book and Subject markers from the
individual docs, using the otherwise-non-functional Volume number.

A combination of TimeSavers and IXGen also works well.

RE: master index of multiple book

2011-09-22 Thread Fred Wersan
I will also echo that Bill Swallow's method is what I do. I use a
utility called Indexing Tools Pro to set up the master book, but you can
do it by hand.

Bear in mind that if you are creating a PDF from your master index, the
links won't go to the individual books unless you do some additional
work. (Unless there is some brilliant way to configure things to make
that work automatically that I am not aware of.) I use a combination of
some framescript scripts and the TimeSavers utility to create live links
from my master index to individual books.

I echo Bill: an uber-book is the way to go. Many years ago I used this
technique to create a hyperlinked index of a whole CD-ROM-full of manuals.

Re: master index of multiple book

2011-09-22 Thread Scott Prentice
If you'd like an easy way to generate an "uber" book from a number of
other books, grab our ComboBook plugin ..

   http://leximation.com/tools/info/combobook.php

It's free.

Yes .. you'll notice that it hasn't been updated for some time. If you
need to install on FM8 or newer, send me an email off list and I'll
point you at a manual install package.

Cheers,

generate it, and then only publish that index file (with cover and
what have you). Granted, this is all from memory from many years ago,
so it might not be 100% accurate but what we did worked very well at
that time.
