It took a complete, and I do mean complete, reinstall from CD and all the patchers, but things are now working as they're supposed to. All I can think is that, somehow, the installation was bad.
Thanks to all for their suggestions, and my apologies if at some point I seemed to get a bit testy at the end. Computer problems do that to me, sometimes, when they don't seem to respond to logic.
