So, just returned from a 10 day trip to Kauai. When we landed on the island
last week and stepped off into clear blue skies with 80+ weather and
promptly snatched a drink on the way to the beach, I lamented to my husband
that it would be just wonderful to relocate . . . after all, as an
independent contractor, my clients can be anywhere, right? My husband,
always the practical one, (or a buzzkill, really) commented that the extreme
time difference between Hawaii and my mainland clients wouldn't probably be
that feasible, and that I would actually probably have to consider getting a
golden handcuff job - not that I could find one in such a "chill"/low-tech
environment. The next day, we opened up The Garden Island, which is small
daily paper for the island of Kauai. It is about as thick as a comic book
and has a smattering of sports and national/international news, a realty
section (ranging from too pricey to way too ridiculously pricey) and a small
want ads section as well. (Anybody remember these before the days of
Monster, etc?) Well, smack dab in the middle of this want ads section with
its usual request for service jobs (think Hyatt Valet, bartender, etc.) was
a quarter page ad for a FULL TIME editor/paginator for the paper itself and
full on skills in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign were mandatory.
The job provides full medical/dental benefits, company-matched 401K (I know
that this perk has gone the way of the DoDo bird for even some of the
Fortune 500 companies), paid vacation (yea, but you're permanently on
vacation when you live in Kauai, right?) and even sick leave. (Uh, sorry
boss . . got the flu again. . . hope you don't see me paddle-boarding Popiu
beach.)

I think that my husband took me seriously for a few minutes after I read him
the ad and threatened to cancel my return ticket to Denver. :-)

Don't know if relocation would be included for the right candidate, but
jess' saying. . . . LOL.
