Indeed!

I still receive this list because I am (a) a relatively early
FrameMaker user - started in 1988 on a Sun 3/50, so nostalgia
applies to me, and (b) still occasionally fire up version FM 12 to
make *small* changes to existing older FM documents.

Otherwise, due to the high cost of "upgrading" FM decision by Adobe
form FM 15 onwards, I moved away from their tools some time back.

Now, the last one is Acrobat Pro and I am trying other PDF tools to
evaluate them as functional replacements - so far, the SoftMaker PDF
tool appears to be working pretty well for my needs.

My choices - and this will NOT necessarily be applicable to others
for their documents, of course! - was to switch to LaTeX markup for
all *my* specification documents (using a very nice editor for
relatively instant and easy check of the PDF output), and various
Magix/Xara tools for image editing, video editing, and brochures.
The Magix/Xara tools are not free, but very low-cost, and much less
expensive than Adobe ... including upgrades.

I am happy with those decisions ... indeed, the experience has made
me look for other lower-cost products too. So, I am also evaluating
SoftMaker Office as an alternative to Microsoft tools that I still
use (for presentation and spreadsheets for example).

Re: [Framers] FM on Next - question from a nostalgic person

2020-06-17 Thread Robert Lauriston
I'm pretty sure FrameMaker 3.0 will work only with legacy fonts.

If you like NextStep, you ought to like OS X / MacOS. It's a direct
descendant and quite recognizable as such. Lots of scorewriter / music
notation software.

My main problem with NextStep is that I had to use the mouse for
everything. It felt like their design guideline was "never type when
you can click, never click when you can click and drag." Using the
mouse so much gave me a bone spur that messed up my rotator cuff.

Re: [Framers] FM on Next - question from a nostalgic person

2020-06-17 Thread Ralf Kohler
Dear List,

Klaus Daube was so friendly to pass on my question. So far I am very grateful
for the feedback. It helped me formulate my question more concisely: I am
looking for the two tutorials “Learning FrameMaker” and “Using FrameMaker”.
Both have been published by
Frame Technology in 1989. From what I can see looking in the world cat
database, there has been a general UNIX edition but not a specific NeXTSTEP
one. Is that correct, or does anybody remember otherwise? I will try to get
this issue through interlibrary loan in my local library. But if someone
happens to have an e-book, I would be very grateful if I could borrow it. By
the way, I really want to work with it, so it's not pure nostalgia. During the
covid-19 lockdown I have sketched a music theory book which I would like to
develop now further in the next month to come. I still use NextSTEP to this day
because I still consider the GUI to be unsurpassed in its simplicity and
functionality.

Regards,

Ralf

Re: [Framers] FM on Next - question from a nostalgic person

2020-06-15 Thread Fred Ridder
Actually, the original NeXT computer was designed before CD-ROM was
standardized. The so-called Yellow Book that contained the CD-ROM standards was
published in 1988, the same year that the NeXT was introduced. Instead, the
original NeXT computer came with a magneto-optical disc drive that used
removable disc cartridges as both the primary storage and the external media
device while a magnetic hard drive was an option.

In 1990, the second generation NeXT -- the one that was officially named the
NeXTcube -- dropped the MO drive in favor of a conventional hard disc as the
primary storage. A 3.5" HD floppy drive was available as an option and every
cube I saw was fitted with one. The NeXTstation (the pizza box) came with a
3.5" floppy standard.

There is a copy of FM4 Windows (sealed in the box) on ebay for $15.99 (or best
offer); I'd offer them $5.
Also, there is a copy of The Frame Handbook by Linda Branagan (circa 1994) for
less than $11 w/free shipping.

I have seen the Branagan book in some college libraries. My recollection is
that is slanted to UNIX.

Re: [Framers] FM on Next - question from a nostalgic person

2020-06-15 Thread Craig Ede
Since NeXTSTEP OS was based on UNIX, I think the Unix FM manual instructions
probably cover most of the functioning of the FM program.

One thing to watch out for in such an old version of FrameMaker is the 'grey
box' problem that used to crop up where graphics would suddenly become grey
boxes. That problem gave us all fits back then in the early 90s This can be
solved by increasing the temp space allocated to the user. Something would max
out the temp space, and BOOM, grey boxes.

Good luck. FM5 is pretty close in features. You can look at the feature set
difference between the two versions and that will tell you what to ignore in
the manual. I do have a set of those manuals in English, but they are a couple
of hundred miles away at this time.

2020-06-15 Thread Klaus Daube
Dear friends
I got the following mail (see the original at the end):

Has anybody of you old hares something hidden in the book shelves?
I would volunteer to scan it and send the paper back (as a retired person i
have time
for such).

Thank you
Klaus

freuen.
Herzlichst,
Ralf Alexander Kohler
