Re: [Framers] Questions about import from Word
Yes, the different page layouts are usually applied by hand, although there is a way to use the mapping tables on reference pages to apply them based on a paragraph tag. It has to be one that applies only on that page, though. Search the help for "Assign a master page to pages with specified paragraph tags". It'll walk you through setting that up. If you import the Word file as RTF, it should bring the colors and attributes with it. If you have the Word styles mapped to FrameMaker tags, the information should convert, but if those attributes were applied manually instead of by using character styles I think Frame will create character tags using the same names. I think. Frame should import the cross-references. Try searching for Cross-Reference - Any. Frame and Word handle xrefs differently, so Frame probably assigned a format of something like Imported Format Para Text with nothing to distinguish it from the surrounding text. Re: [Framers] Questions about import from Word
Try converting the Word doc to RTF format first. That has always worked better with paragraph and character tag conversions to Frame. It also tends to bring XREFs in with less issue. > On Aug 22, 2018, at 08:11, Caroline Tabach wrote: > > Lin > thanks for the answers. > > I spent a couple of months using this Word template and understanding it. > > When I converted to FrameMaker I took some time to map the styles and then > create a preset file. Re: [Framers] Questions about import from Word
Lin thanks for the answers. I spent a couple of months using this Word template and understanding it. When I converted to FrameMaker I took some time to map the styles and then create a preset file. I mapped tables, characters and paragraphs. This all worked beautifully. (Frame 2017) re 2 In my template the title page has a different master page, so i have to apply this by hand. 3. The bold and italics which were not in a Word style, did not appear in my doc, so i am applying by hand, the colors also did not appear. For next time, is there some way where the colors and bolds etc can be transferred from the Word to the Frame file? 4. the x-refs did not get transferred in any way. Should they have been, was there something i could have set up to make it happen? They were references to various headings. Re: [Framers] Questions about import from Word
A few more details would help. :) 1. There's no fast way to replace images copied into a file with images imported by reference. It's pretty much an image by image deal. 2. Fixing them how? 3. Did the text come through with the color intact, or are you applying a tag to fix that it didn't come through? In either case, there is, as far as I know (I know I'll be corrected if I'm wrong) no way to search for color and no way to apply it without creating a paragraph or character tag. If the color came through the conversion, then there should be a tag for it that you can search for. 4. If the bold and italic didn't come through then there's not much chance of "fixing it" other than searching for the words or phrases you know it should be and applying it. Note that FrameMaker WILL let you manually format things like bold and italic without creating character tags for them, but it's generally Not A Good Idea. Best practise is to create tags. 5. Fix the xrefs how? What's wrong with them? The last few bits of a Word conversion, the general tidying up, as you put it, are normally the most manually intensive ones. There aren't many ways around it. Frankly, my personal experience has been that it is frequently easier to convert the Word file(s) to pure text and just work from that, but YMMV. You might want to check out some of Rick Quattro's scripts. The TableCleaner script is invaluable for converting and cleaning up Word tables. The FindChangeBatchFormats script may also be of use, since it renames tags for you and could be used to rename any imported styles from Word to their equivalent Frame tags. [Framers] Questions about import from Word
Hi, as I wrote in a previous mail I have imported a guide form Word to Frame. I spent time learning the templates and setting it all up and most styles converted well. However, it seems that there is a lot of additional work, is there any way to make this faster? These are the things i am working on. 1. Replacing all graphics that are copied into the files, by graphics imported by reference 2. Fixing Master page of first pages of chapters 3. Some text was marked green or red, not by using a specific style, I made appropriate paragraph tags and am applying. 4. Applying bold and italic in places where it was missed out in the conversion 5. General tidying up 6. Is there any way that cross references can be fixed? Are there any shortcuts? -- Caroline Tabach Technical/Marcom Writer e-mail: caroline.tab...@gmail.com ___ This message is from the Framers mailing list Send messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com Visit the list's homepage at http://www.frameusers.com Archives located at http://www.mail-archive.com/framers%40lists.frameusers.com/ Subscribe and unsubscribe at http://lists.frameusers.com/listinfo.cgi/framers-frameusers.com Send administrative questions to listad...@frameusers.com
