If I was a noob, it might not bother me, but I've been working with computers
since 1971, and driven everything from dual Data General 7100's with 264k RAM
(yes, 264k, and about the size of a commercial
refrigerator) in parallel with a 92MB Winchester, all the way to Crays that we
shared with the NSA, to an 84-way IBM custom. In my software experience, FM9 is
fraught with the most unexpected behavior.

Hmm, I've got 2 workspaces created (home, office) that were variations of the
Authoring one that they ship. If I move stuff around on them and save them
again overtop of themselves, it sticks for me from launch to launch. Now - my
desktops aren't too complicated I don't keep books open because they take up
too much space, so I haven't tested what Tammy was saying so others' results
may vary.

Yes, of course. I open in the same workspace each time...the one I set-up when
I loaded FM9.

It would be easier to think of the things that do stick: The only element of
the UI that sticks is the book hierarchical view frame.

And, other than Tammy's book width issue, you've saved your configuration off
into a named workspace, right? Are you finding any other things that don't
stick where you want them to?

I am filled with regret at having purchased TCS w/FM9. I evaluated the MadCap
tools a few times and it got down to the devil you know.

One of the serious advantages of having a user-configurable workspace is that
consistent use enhances your workflow. I knew I would face workflow changes on
the switch to FM9 and accounted for the time required. I was unaware, though,
that the workspace in FM9 would not hold a configuration from launch to launch.
Each time I launch FM9, I must perform some workspace reconfiguration to put
the workspace back like it was the most recent time FM9 was open; the way I
like it; the way it has been incorporated into my workflow; the way it saves me
time.

Using FM9, just using FM9!, has become a task that I must take into account
when I size my work...Kelly.

Is there a way to keep the book file squished down to the width that I

 want
 when I open my workspace?

Not that I've found. I don't know if it's a bug, but I'd call it a design flaw.
I wish I could reclaim that extra little bit of space. It makes the difference
between being able to display at a two-page spread at full screen height or not
for me.
