RE: FIles of old FM versions

2006-08-23 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Hi everyone,
If I'm not mistaken, for that technique to work you must have at least one
document open in Frame. It can be a new blank document.

Hi, Klaus:

Do you see any messages when you try to open the file?

FrameMaker 7.x can read FrameMaker files as far back as 4.x, I believe.
Your file may be corrupted. One technique that might help is called
OpenHeroic. This bypasses FrameMaker's validation checks that are usually
performed when opening a file. You perform it with these keystrokes:

* Tap and release Escape
* Tap and release lowercase o
* Tap and release uppercase H
* Locate the file in the openFile dialog box.

from its
paper form. Anyhow some content had to be updated.

How to get really old FM versions (set of diskettes)?

With a virtual environment or an old Windows 3.1 machine some
bootstrapping
process should be possible.

Do you know of other means to read an old FM file?

Well there still is the problem of reading it physically (a diskette
format
no more in use, MO disks etc.). I guess that things must be
reconstructed
from printed matter (scan, ocr, ...)

BTW does anyone know the details of the header information? What does
the
letter J in MakerFile 6.0J denote? FM 7.2 puts MakerFile 7.0H into
the
file.

Thanks for your ideas

Apologies if this is a duplicate - I had an email problem and it's not
clear if this was sent properly.

If you have a large volume of files on obsolete media, you may want to
search Google for data-recovery services, or perhaps search for
equipment that can read your media. It may be possible that the old
media have deterioriated or have been damaged in storage.

2006-08-22 Thread Art Campbell

I think you may not have been able to open your old file because of
file corruption,
not because FM 7 can't -- it certainly can. FM is backward
compatible through all versions.
What error messages do you get when you attempt to open it?
Did you try opening the FM file with anything else? Like FM in text
mode (holding down the CTRL when you select it)? or a hex editor?
