Karen,

Here at WebWorks, we're painfully aware of the issues surrounding
missing fonts in FrameMaker source documents. In addition to index
generation problems, it also means that cross-references will fail to
update. Those update failures occur even when you manually update
cross-references with FDK/FrameScript code.

I'm not sure why missing fonts are such a break the world issue for
FrameMaker. This has been true for years (since FrameMaker 6 that I
know of) and continues to be an issue with the latest FrameMaker 10.

I'd be very happy for Adobe to address this issue some day.

So, did you try opening them all and then generating the index? (From the book
window, hold the Shift key and go to File Open All Files in Book.)

Do you have unresolved cross-references, missing fonts, etc.? To
update/generate, FM has to open and scan all the files in the background. It
sounds like some error condition prevents it from doing this in the background
(without being able to prompt you for what to do about the error condition).

Richard,

Yay! Opening all the files at once worked. You hit it on the head,
something is causing FrameMaker to not be able to open all the files
in the background. Where would I start looking?

thanks for the workaround,

When you open a file with an error condition, FM should display a dialog box
informing you of the problem. For instance, if the file contains unresolved
cross-references, a dialog tells you so and directs you to the manual/help for
information on locating them. If the file uses unavailable fonts, FM tells you
so and asks if you want to reformat it using available fonts.

If you're not seeing any such error reporting dialogs when you open the files,
I'm not sure what's going on. I know you can suppress them programmatically
(e.g., via FrameScript), but I didn't think there was any way to turn them off
for manual file opening via the interface.

I have painstakingly migrated from Type 1 fonts to Open Type fonts,
and equally carefully installed the new fonts on several machines. We
have long dealt with false missing font errors. Of course I'll make a
final pass for font irregularities, but there has never been one
foolproof cure to that problem.

Frame used to provide useful error messages--condition problem,
missing fonts, color inconsistencies, etc. Now I'm lucky if I get
book is inconsistent. :-(

Hey, if I can get an index, I'll do whatever it takes. :-)

Thanks,
Karen

Yeah, old fonts can hide in unexpected, hard-to-root-out places -- like in the
default paragraphs for a table format that you're not even using.

There's a permanent solution if you're certain that:

-- All the fonts you really want are there.
-- Nothing visible is using anything else.
-- Or at least, the fonts FM is substituting for the missing ones (listed in
the Console window after you open a file) are acceptable replacements.

But you may want to make backups first in case you're wrong. :-)

1) Close all your files.
2) Go to File Preferences General, turn off Remember Missing Font Names,
and click Set.
3) Open a file with missing fonts. When prompted if you want to permanently
replace the missing fonts with available ones, click OK.
4) Save the file, making the font substitution permanent.
5) Repeat for each file with missing fonts.

This permanently replaces each missing font with the one FM chose to
substitute. You can even control what gets substituted by editing the [Fonts]
section of your maker.ini file. It's not exactly intuitive or simple (getting
the font names right is the problem), but if you're interested, check out the
Customizing Frame Products PDF in the Online Manuals folder inside your FM
installation directory.
