There are much bigger differences than that. Mif2Go is more more techy,
much harder to set up, but requires much less (if not zero) cleanup
after the conversion.

If you go with Mif2Go, I recommend hiring someone to help you set if up
and train you to make minor modifications.

Just my 2 micrograms of silver.

If I understand you correctly, you are talking about WebHelp
search, right? So you are comparing RH WebHelp with OmniHelp.
(For other Help formats, like HTML Help, search is built in so
that it is the same regardless of the tool used.)

One difference is that OmniHelp is Open Source (LGPL), and
RH WebHelp is proprietary. That means that with OmniHelp,
you can add any search engine you please, by modifying the
JavaScript. It's not trivial, but it's certainly possible.

For OmniHelp, our goal is to make it very fast to respond,
because people using Help systems want to find the info they
need quickly and get on with the job they are doing. So we
do all the search indexing at authoring time, and provide a
JavaScript array, ready to use, so that search even of large
docs is instantaneous. That approach pretty much limits you
to keyword search (including regex), which we feel is a very
reasonable price to pay for the high speed. We also feel that
an index, properly done, is superior to any form of search.

So we're not inclined to invest the time needed to implement
Natural Language search in OmniHelp ourselves. It would
slow down searches, especially on large doc sets, dramatically,
for a rather questionable benefit. However, anyone who really
wants it can certainly add it as an option, and redistribute
the result legally, which may not be possible under less
permissive licenses.

And, of course, there are quite a few other differences that
we consider much more significant... but that's your call. ;-)

Yes, that's all there is to it, but you need to SaveAs MIF.

Once our FM files are saved as v9, can any users still using v7.1 still

You need to back save to a MIF format. The issues would be that any

that'd be a problem because 9 supports unicode characters and fonts, but 7
did not.

Webworks doesn't exist as a product any longer. It became ePublisher, and

You're likely to be better off financially by upgrading to the Tech Comm

When you buy a v9 licence, do you automatically get all the patches that

It depends on when Adobe updates their CDs to include the patches.
Downloading them or using the built-in installer is pretty painless

Any other tips for upgrading?

Some people have reported font issues with really old font files.

Support stopped when version 8 shipped several years ago.

EPublisher is supposed to be a new release/version of WebWorks, but I have
no personal info about it.

RH can produce a herd of formats including CHM. I don't think it's
especially difficult to master, but like most programs, I think it follows
the 80/20 rule. You can do most of your work easily, but there are always
some nuances to figure out. If you have a simple design and help
implementation, it takes less time to figure out.

You may want to pop over to the TCS User's Group for more info from RH

Hi, Lynn!

Short answers to some of your questions:
Yes, opening the docs in v9 is all you have to do and save as you
normally do.
However, you can only backsave to v8 from v9. We have run into this
problem several times, having to find someone one on v8 to then backsave
to v7.

Hope that helps!

RE: Upgrading FM from 7.1 to 9

2009-11-25 Thread David Spreadbury
Lynn,
I haven't upgraded to FM9, yet. It might happen in the near future though.

In all the upgrades I have done with FrameMaker in the past, to get your
documents updated just open and save. Everything should work just fine.

As far as those members of your team that are staying on an earlier release,
you would need to do a SaveAs FM7.x any documents that you send to them. You
would need to do this each and every time, so getting everyone on the same
version as soon as possible would save you some work. Also, if you use any
of the new features of FM9, you will lose them when you SaveAs FM7.x.

I don't use WebWorks, but if memory serves me, every time you upgrade FM you
upgrade WebWorks. This can get pretty expensive if you have a lot of users.

(yippee, we've never upgraded before!).

We're all running Win XP.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge, but do we open our v7.1 FM files in
v9 and then save them as v9? Or is it more complicated than that?

Once our FM files are saved as v9, can any users still using v7.1 still
read them (there's a chance our counterpart US office won't get the
upgrade to v9)? Or would we need to save back as v7 for those rare
occasions? Are there any known issues with doing this?

We currently using WebWorks (WebWorks AutoMap 2003 Client within FM
menu) to produce CHM files. Will this be affected if we upgrade to v9?

When you buy a v9 licence, do you automatically get all the patches that
are released?

Any other tips for upgrading?

Can anyone confirm that v7.1 is no longer supported by Adobe?

Thanks very much in advance for your help,
Lynn

Yes, that's all there is to it, but you need to SaveAs MIF.

You need to back save to a MIF format. The issues would be that any
features in 9 would drop out in 7. If you use any foreign characters, that'd
be a problem because 9 supports unicode characters and fonts, but 7 did not.

Webworks doesn't exist as a product any longer. It became ePublisher, and
the current version is required to support FM9.

You're likely to be better off financially by upgrading to the Tech Comm
Suite so you can also get the current version of Acrobat and then switch to
RoboHelp.

It depends on when Adobe updates their CDs to include the patches.
Downloading them or using the built-in installer is pretty painless though.

 Any other tips for upgrading?

Some people have reported font issues with really old font files.

Can anyone confirm that v7.1 is no longer supported by Adobe?

Support stopped when version 8 shipped several years ago.
