I don't know why font replacement wouldn't work right, but thanks to
Arnis Gubins I figured out that the fundamental problem was that the
documentation department's master font directory contained only
ZD__.PFM, not ZD__.PFB, so the Type 1 version of ZapfDingbats
FrameMaker was expecting
You could change Adobe PI Std to WingDings in the maker.ini. (Not sure what the
font cognoscenti with think of that for high quality printout; I'd be
interested to hear.) Craig
