RE: Re: Cannot import a .jpg
Hi, Nancy. Re-saving a JPEG original as another JPEG can be "further" lossy (compounding the initial drop in quality) ... you might want to make sure that the image quality has not degraded too far. Assuming you did not go back to the original image source material, of course! You can introduce bits of fluff pixels in places that did not have them before - particularly in sharp edges or steep color transition points. Or you can save in another graphics format - like PNG - that is not lossy. You're essentially "re-jpeging > a jpeg", which throws out some pixels each time. That's not quite accurate. JPEG never "throws out" any pixels, because that would change the dimensions of the image itself. What happens is that it throws out some of the information (typically color information) *about* some of the pixels based on its area-based image compression algorithm, which assumes that the vast majority of individual pixels in a photograph will be pretty close in color and brightness to the other pixels that immediately surround it. Yes, it is lossy; and yes, it does cause progressive degradation. But it doesn't do this by reducing the number of pixels, only by reducing the amount of information it records about each pixel. And note that this kind of *image* compression, which is inherently lossy, is a completely different concept than the lossless *data* compression that is used to produce zip files (among other things). In data compression, no data is ever thrown away; it is just stored in a more efficient format. -Fred Ridder ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: Cannot import a .jpg
I agree with Art that opening and re-saving the file is your best bet. If possible, save in another file format than JPG, such as PNG or GIF, as you'll lose data as a result of compression. You're essentially "re-jpeging a jpeg", which throws out some pixels each time. -=Ed. > -Original Message- > From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers- > boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Art Campbell > Sent: Monday, December 07, 2009 4:04 PM > To: Nancy Allison > Cc: framers@lists.frameusers.com > Subject: Re: Cannot import a .jpg > > I've run into this a couple times when an application didn't create the .jpg > as the import filter expected it... > Try opening and SaveAs a new file name in Photoshop, or SnagIt Editor, or > another editor that you have on hand to see if a different editor makes a > difference. > > Art > > Art Campbell > art.campb...@gmail.com > "... Re: Cannot import a .jpg
I've run into this a couple times when an application didn't create the .jpg as the import filter expected it... Try opening and SaveAs a new file name in Photoshop, or SnagIt Editor, or another editor that you have on hand to see if a different editor makes a difference.
