The omsys site is obsolete. It has been replaced by www.mif2go.com.

If you want to see how MIF2Go works, just search for mif2go on YouTube. I
have posted some movies there.

Mif2Go user documentation can be found in various formats here:
http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm#Mif2Go_UG

At a place where I used to work, I assigned a junior writer the task of
using Mif2Go to convert some of our smaller documents to DITA. She
figured it out fairly quickly.

For some reason I thought you were converting your source files to DITA,
but in another post you said you're not. I think Mif2Go can convert FM
to non-DITA XML, too. You might want to check the trial version first.

RE: Tips/tools/resources for converting unstructured to structured

2012-08-24 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
The location of the Aldous webinar series has been moved to an Adobe server.

To speed things up for you on the link to Tom Aldous' 7-part series (it is
excellent; I went through it), here are links to individual episodes:

Part 1: Unstructured To XML Workflow Series Part 1: Analyzing Your Unstructured
Document - Preprocess Steps
http://adobe.ly/PfkRYK
Part 2: Unstructured To XML Workflow Series Part 2: Creating A FrameMaker
Conversion Table - Part 1
http://adobe.ly/Q5BtGM
Part 3: Unstructured To XML Workflow Series Part 3: Creating A FrameMaker
Conversion Table - Part 2
http://adobe.ly/Pfl1Q1
Part 4: Unstructured To XML Workflow Series Part 4: Element Definition Document
(EDD) - Home Grown or a Standard
http://adobe.ly/Q5C0sf
Part 5: Unstructured To XML Workflow Series Part 5: Creating your Structured
Template from an Unstructured One
http://adobe.ly/Q5C8b9
Part 6: Unstructured To XML Workflow Series Part 6: Structure Applications and
What Is Necessary and How To Create
http://adobe.ly/Q5CjTY
Part 7: Unstructured To XML Workflow Series Part 7: Save As XML, Now What?
http://adobe.ly/PfliCp

Each link will take you to what appears to be an event registration page. You
will need to log in with free Adobe.com account credentials. If you have
difficulties accessing the recording with the latest version of Chrome, try
Firefox or Internet Explorer.

NOTE: this series covers virtually every step for setting up a modified or
customized structured application in FrameMaker (in addition to the
conversion.) Please be aware that the latest version of FrameMaker (v11) has
even better support for DITA out-of-the-box, so the experience would be
easier, were you to upgrade to the latest version. Once you have set up a good
set of conversion tables, they should work for most of your content, if your
unstructured documents have consistent formatting.

I hope this set of links is helpful to all.

Tips/tools/resources for converting unstructured to structured

2012-08-24 Thread Pat Christenson
Hi all -

Thanks for the suggestions. Luckily, I don't have to build the template, EDD
and DTD. I just have to convert some unstructured files to the structure so
I'll be diving into conversion tables and see how it goes.

If you can, consider Yves' suggestion about using Mif2Go. If I recall
correctly, it's easier/faster than using conversion tables in FM.

If you're converting from unstructured to structured, would that not
be the time to adopt DITA?

Tips/tools/resources for converting unstructured to structured

2012-08-23 Thread Pat Christenson
I'm about to start a unstructured-to-structuredconversion project in either
Frame 9 or 10. Does anyone have any tips, tools or online resources that would
be helpful for such a project?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Pat Christenson

I haven't watched them, but Tom Aldous has e-seminars about conversion here:

Hi Pat

This may help:

http://tv.adobe.com/watch/structured-authoring-xml-and-dita/migrating-to-structured-framemaker-using-conversion-tables/

and this too, but the images seem to be missing:

http://tmaldous.com/2011/10/06/conversion-to-dita-it-is-not-an-overnight-event/

Tom Aldous used to have a seven-part e-seminar “Unstructured to XML
Workflow Series” but the link no longer works either:
http://tmaldous.com/2011/08/04/7-part-e-seminar-series-unstructured-to-xml-framemaker-10-instructional-series/

Maybe Tom can check this?

If you are converting to DITA, you can also use MIF2Go, which is a GREAT
plugin for FrameMaker: http://www.mif2go.com/

Kind regards

Tips/tools/resources for converting unstructured to structured

2012-08-23 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann

NOTE: this series covers virtually every step for setting up a modified or
customized structured application in FrameMaker (in addition to the
conversion.) Please be aware that the latest version of FrameMaker (v11) has
even better support for DITA "out-of-the-box", so the experience would be
easier, were you to upgrade to the latest version. Once you have set up a good
set of conversion tables, they should work for most of your content, if your
unstructured documents have consistent formatting.

I hope this set of links is helpful to all.
