RE: Training for FrameMaker 10 and S1000D

2011-11-23 Thread Veronica Kutt
Hi Nadine,

Thank you for the recommendation for our training. At the moment, we're not
offering S1000D/FrameMaker 10 training. This is something we are working
toward offering in the future.

Sincerely,

You might want to contact Front Runner in Toronto
(http://www.front-runner.com/). I don't see course for that on their Web
site, but they might be able to help you in some way.

T o anyone offering FrameMaker training:

S1000D is a documentation standard that was developed in Europe for
military use, but is now being widely adopted by Aerospace companies
around the world. Theoretically, it's a framework to create any kind of
documentation, from paper parts lists to maintenance procedures with 3D
graphics on your iPhone, all from information modules stored in a
central database. It's a nice vision of the future, but getting from
here to there is the big (expensive) problem.

FrameMaker 10 seems to have quite a lot of S1000D support built in, such
as the means to interact with a common source database and the ability
to validate data modules against business rules, etc., but we are having
trouble making any practical use of it.

Is anyone offering a course yet on using FrameMaker to support an S1000D
implementation? We have been to some free seminars and watched plenty of
Webinars, but they were mostly sales pitches on the benefits of the
standard without any practical value. We need to move ahead with a real
solution, because we have customers that are starting to request
documentation that meets the new standard.

I would love to hear from any of you trainers about what resources you
have available. We would really like to keep using FrameMaker as the
basis for our documentation, rather than start with something completely
new. It would be a big plus if the training was available in the Seattle
 area.

 Thanks,

 Clint

Re: Training for FrameMaker 10 and S1000D

2011-11-22 Thread Alan Houser

We've looked at providing S1000D training and support, but haven't
been clear on the business case for entering this market. The
blocking factors for small training companies appear to be (from my
perspective):

- Organizations that deploy S1000D are usually very large. They have
their own particular purchasing infrastructure, with their own (also
typically large) preferred vendors.
- The Defense community (where S1000D prevails) is close-nit. Again,
the players prefer their own set of vendors, and its relatively
difficult to enter this community of players from the outside
(without having prior experience and connections in Defense).
- Working with the Defense community presents formidable and costly
roadblocks (like required security clearances).

If my experience does not ring true with others (practitioners or
vendors) I'd love to hear from you.

Mekon in the UK has extensive experience with S1000D and FrameMaker.
I'm not aware of this combination of experience in North America.
You might look for S1000D training from one of the North
America-based companies in this space (Inmedius, O'Neill and
Associates, Hebco come to mind in the U.S.), and hire a
trainer/consultant to customize the FrameMaker 10 S1000D support to
meet your particular workflow and business requirements.
