autonumbering in book

I'm a bit rusty with my FM skills, and having trouble with a very simple issue. How do I make sure that my figure and table numbers run all the way through a multiple chapter book, rather than restarting in each section? Please respond directly; I don't get the digest. Thanks in advance. I
