Can no longer create .ps that does not error in Distiller

2013-12-11 Thread Steve Rickaby
If there is anyone out there who is still using FrameMaker 7.0p577 on Mac in
Classic, maybe they can help me with this problem, as I've wasted hours on it
and I'm a bit desperate.

For historical reasons, I'm still on this setup. I reported earlier that the
AdobePS printer driver, which I have used without any problem for a great many
books and years, now falls over with the message 'The printer description file
associated with this printer has caused an error (101)' on *both* Macs - and
then FrameMaker crashes. I'm using the Acrobat PPD. This occurs even with a new
clean installation of FrameMaker. Nothing significant has changed with the
setups. I have therefore abandoned AdopePS.

So I am using the Apple Laserwriter 8 driver and writing .ps to file. However,
I'm getting miscellaneous graphics-related errors that are sending Distiller
(6) into a frenzy and an apparent endless loop. The main error appears to be

'%%[ Error: limitcheck; OffendingCommand:
310E121210182A3E4A674394332E3924051A251C3844423941392F2723241C1B425D5F635D5542392946552021292737454662564D4E4A3B505D6467552B3C3
 ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%'

after which Distiller goes a bit mad and reports completion figures of
thousands of percent.

I have one offending chapter, and turning the graphics off in that chapter
allows the chapter to distill without error. However, if I try the entire book
up to that point, I still get errors.

I'm not looking for someone to fix this, but I'd be most grateful for
suggestions for a sensible diagnostic procedure. Maybe isolating the graphics
to separate files and trying to create PDFs from them?

[I do have FrameMaker 10 for Windows, but at present don't have a machine on
which to run it.]

Isolating the graphics one by one would be approach. I have a hunch it'll
be a .PDF or .EPS; maybe conflicting versions of PostScript or something
obscure like that.

One important item you left out of your description is whether you're using
the distiller head that's installed by the FM distribution or have a
complete version of Acrobat...

I am using a complete version of Acrobat 6. I did check, though, and Acrobat 6
doesn't seem to install AdobePS. However, as I said, I've given up on that, so
I guess there's no point chasing the 101 error unless I can't get the
LaserWriter 8 driver to play.

Obviously I am using an old system, but it's always *just worked*, and now it
suddenly doesn't, I'm a bit lost. (The reason I'm not running v 10 on Windows
is that I've been waiting for the new Mac Pro.)

Re: Can no longer create .ps that does not error in Distiller [progress]

2013-12-11 Thread Steve Rickaby
My grateful thanks to Art and Syed for much help and moral support.

Syed - you were right, I should have tried MIF-washing the problem chapter
first. After doing so, I got a .ps file that Distiller could distill, but with
a Ps error, and recovery, producing a PDF with the message 'PostScript error
(undefined filename)' where the problem graphic should have been - and thus
identifying the problem file.

What Distiller actually said was 'A PostScript error occurred. FrameMaker is
attempting recovery.' That's a *really* helpful error message ;-) And one that
also implies co-operation between Distiller and FrameMaker, which I doubt.

I am reminded of some prototype software I once had to work with that died with
the message 'Got surprised by error'.

So this is a substantial step forward: I now only have to find out what was
wrong with this graphic (a PDF). Converting it to a TIFF fixed the issue.

Many thanks to all.

[These are all author-suppled graphics files - often a bit of a nightmare, I
find.]
