It sounds as if you haven't grouped all the objects and set the
runaround properties for the group...
If the graphic objects are not grouped, each may have its own
properties and those may be in conflict with the underlying PNG.

into the text frame; however, when I move the text frame into position over
the arrow, the text disappears.
