Re: Print Book-PDF Setup Drops Bookmarks

2009-06-09 Thread John Newman
I have noticed the same problem with the Para Designer getting stuck.
However, I have found that I do not need to restart FM. I just close the
Para Designer (delete its tab from the pod), and then re-open it. Still a
pain, but not as much of one. It would be nice to get the bug fixed, though.

Subject: Print Book-PDF Setup Drops Bookmarks

 Hey Fellow Framers,

I was just teaching some folks how to use FM 9 (on Win XP) when we ran
into some interesting problems. The first is one I've mentioned before
in this forum, although now I can re-create it. It has to do with the
Paragraph Designer getting stuck. You can click on the icons to set the
Default Font, Pagination or, but the Para Designer pod remains on the
Basic view and will not switch or accept any actions. The only fix is
to restart FM. I found that this occurs when you are creating a new
paragraph tag and set a tab using the ruler at the top of the doc. When
you click Apply or Update All, the designer becomes catatonic and you
have to restart. Sometimes this occurs when you put in a tab, then take
it out, but seems related to using the ruler to do so. So my
recommendation is to set your tabs numerically using the Basic tab in
the Para Designer until this bug is fixed.

The second problem I saw occurred when printing a book. I can use PDF
Setup to set my bookmarks, but I cannot save them. I click the Set
button, then make my print. The next time I open the Print Book panel,
my bookmark settings are gone and they're back to their defaults. So
every time I make a print, I have to set my pdf bookmarks. Sigh.

Has anyone else seen these glitches?

 Susan Corcoran

RE: Print Book-PDF Setup Drops Bookmarks

2009-06-08 Thread Corcoran, Susan
Hi Richard,

I tested this method and you're right. Setting the PDF Bookmarks using
Format Document PDF Setup saves the bookmark settings for a book in
FM9. I was just used to doing it using the PDF Setup button in the
Print window during my first print, then saving the book with those
parameters. I still think this is a bug, but at least now I have a
workaround.

Thanks!

Smart, Richard! I hadn't investigated this before, but have now verified
that your hypothesis works correctly in my installation of FM 9 (it's
not TCS, just FM 9). PDF setup changes made in the Print Book dialog are
not sticky, but those made from Format Document do seem to stick and
are reflected in the Print Book dialog way of accessing the PDF setup. I
guess it makes sense now that I understand it, so that I could make a
one-time change through the Print dialog, or a lasting change through
Format Document.

Just my testing skills to add to the theory,

And on a somewhat off-topic matter, I wish Adobe would put all the para tags on
the Bookmarks tab in the Don't Include column, rather than forcing us to move
them over one by one.

RE: Print Book-PDF Setup Drops Bookmarks

2009-06-08 Thread Matt Sullivan
Nadine, I completely agree with your suggestion.

Might I suggest you visit the Adobe Wish List (as I have) to have this sent
to the FM product manager, and the TCS group manager.

Here's what I posted:
When producing PDF, change the default value for para tags (and elements) to
Do Not Include instead of Include

This allows us to choose the 4 tags we need, instead of deselecting the
dozen(s) of tags we don't need.

Here's the link...
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

I've looked 'em in the eye (literally) and they've told me this link is BY
FAR the best way to get your suggestion logged and considered for bug fixes
and new features.

After that, it's just a numbers game, so twitter, facebook, linkedin,
frameers, tcs2, hatt to your hearts' content to get your pal's to vote for
these fixes. (at the link above!)

If you ever need the link again, it's also on the Resources page (on the
FrameMaker course page) at roundpeg.com
