Re: [Framers] Linking to a LAN Shared Drive

2017-10-06 Thread john . x . posada
Thanks...some things are under my control and some I can only suggest. I've
been suggesting the "no space" issue...the jury is out.

One of the advantages to having a closed highly regulated environment is we
pretty much all uie the same desktop software pack, so the variation of
browsers is kept to a minimum.

I'll evaluate the double slash vs the forward slash. Thanks

FrameMaker uses the backslash character in dialogs for specifying special
characters, such as \D equates to a double dagger symbol. To avoid this, you
will need to double up the backslashes, thus:
file:///xxx.xxx.xxx\\xx\\CORP\\MANY\\DEPTDATA\\\\xxx_Reference.pdf

FrameMaker historically had multi-platform support, and so all path names in
FrameMaker can be specified using forward slashes, for example:
     file://hostname/xx/CORP/MANY/DEPTDATA//xxx_Reference.pdf

You may want to consider NOT referencing file content, as some browsers
- Internet Explorer and Google Chrome - can get picky, and fail to display
content.  Additionally, spaces and 'extended' characters in path names can also
cause trouble.

I hope this helps.

Hi John,

You have to use forward slashes instead of backslashes. If you want to use
backslashes, you have to double them.

It interprets \d or \D as a special character. To actually get "d" into the
URL, change it to \\d or \\D. I ran into this just the other day.

2017-10-05 Thread Robert Lauriston
Theoretically, the marker looks something like:

message URL file:///

However, if the employees don't all use the same browser on the same
operating system, such links may not work for all of them.

It's a lot cleaner to have an internal web server and host docs on that.
