RE: Conditional text by paragraph tag?

2015-02-12 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Fred,

I really prefer FrameMaker's backup mechanism as it is.
Every some months I notice that I saved something (and closed
the file) and then I noticed that the last change was not correct.
Then I can take the backup without these last changes.
Other applications do the same, e.g. CorelDesigner/CorelDraw.
Therefore that's a common approach.

If you want a copy when you save a file, then you might do this
via FrameScript or ExtendScript. Similar scripts had been discussed
several times on the framescript-users mailing list.
You might log a feature request here:
https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm

Best regards

Winfried

No, in fact I *don't* let FrameMaker generate .backup.fm files because they
aren't really backups. They are just renamed versions of the *previous* saved
version of the file.

Say you open a document FileA.fm. You make a whole slew of changes, and then do
a Save. You figure that the newly saved FileA.fm is identical to
FileA.backup.fm because you had FrameMaker make a backup upon saving, right.
Wrong. FileA.backup.fm is the *original* file that you opened, *before* you
made any changes to it. The backup is always one set of changes behind the
content that a real backup would have in it. (And since Frame won't even let
you do a Save unless you've changed *something*, the current saved version and
the backup can *never* be identical.) So rolling back to the automatic
backup will actually lose you the last set of changes that were in your last
save.

0) Save all files in book.
1) Get condition onto your Clipboard (right-click text with the condition, Copy Special Conditional Text Format).
2) Find: Paragraph Style [name of paragraph].
3) Replace: By Pasting.

Hello,

In Frame 9, is it possible for me to set all text of a given paragraph tag to a particular conditional text format in a single step?

For example, I want to assign the condition “Lisa Info” to all paragraph tags b1 Body1 and bu1 Bullet1, but not to paragraph tag followUp, without going through and selecting each paragraph.

Thank you,

This is the way to go, but only if you want “Lisa Info” to be the only
conditional text format on the target paragraphs. If some of them are already
tagged with other conditional text formats, this procedure removes that other
tagging.

I work on our company network. At the end of each day, I delete any
unwanted files from the folder(s) I've been working in, and copy the
folders for that manual to my local drive. I know it relies on my
memory, but I've done it for so long now, it's become a habit.

I think that the idea of the FM backup files is to provide *something*
in case the current file gets corrupted in some way. It's better to lose
the last edits to a file than to have the current (possibly corrupt)
file overwrite what was a good file.

Perhaps instead of calling these filename.backup.fm it should have
been filename.lastgood.fm.

If you want real backups, you need to set up a mechanism for copying the
current files elsewhere for safe keeping.

Indeed!

(As I recall, we discussed this recently) ... my approach is an Archive
folder below the book folder to which I copy everything before each edit
session, so I can roll back if needed. And a separate Windows-level backup
system (I highly recommend ShadowProtect from StorageCraft - but there are
others) to store away changed files twice a day, with a 3 month rolling storage.
