Re: Generating web-based help
An .exe file is not web help, and if clicking a help button in a web application prompted me to run an .exe file I would probably assume it was malware. On Wed, Jan 7, 2015 at 12:43 PM, Sharp, Amy amy.sh...@conocophillips.com wrote: This question was posed Nov. 10, so I'm late responding -- I let messages pile up. I had the exact same issue with a three-year-old CHM that worked great from a server until we went to update the help. Lo and behold, MS had changed the rules. I was lucky enough to find a way around it, using a third-party tool that is not free, but inexpensive, called HTML Executable. It doesn't matter how the CHM was created. I produced mine in Author-It. You run the CHM through HTML Executable and turn it into an EXE file, which can be run from a server. The best part: as part of the process, you can pick a new skin for your help. In my case, it allowed me to upgrade the appearance without tedious (and occasionally dangerous) template rework in Author-It! HTML Executable was fast, did a great job, and required almost no time to learn, especially since I only used that single aspect of the software. I highly recommend it as a simple solution. Google MOTW / Mark of the Web. What add-on are you using to generate the help? You should be generating a set of HTML and CSS files, not a CHM. Re: Generating web-based help
Oh, wait, I was confusing two things. You can't read a CHM on a network drive, that's a Windows security thing. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896054 If you've got a CHM, you're not generating web help. MOTW causes a similar problem when viewing web help in MSIE. On Mon, Nov 10, 2014 at 8:26 AM, Robert Lauriston rob...@lauriston.com wrote: Google MOTW / Mark of the Web. David, are you still using WebWorks ePublisher to generate your help system? If yes, have you considered outputting to WebWorks Reverb? Re: Generating web-based help
David, you don't mention what tools or process you use to create the CHMs, but I'll try to answer your questions: 1. As Roger mentioned, you cannot open a CHM over the web or on network drives. It's a format for local deployment only. 2. You can probably just use the uncompiled HTML. 3. If you use the uncompiled HTML, you shouldn't need to change any formatting. I’m not sure how useful this will be to people, but Sumatra PDF, a lightweight PDF viewer, can open .chm help on network drives. http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/free-pdf-reader.html It’s also generally a very nice, minimal PDF reader.
