Thanks: Review Process for documents in HTML?

2009-04-09 Thread Beierle, Cecily
Thanks to Art Campbell and Richard Combs for your thoughtful replies and
suggestions.

We do have WebWorks make most of the HTML changes, such as font, color,
borders. We never did you page numbers in our cross-references, so we haven't
had a problem with that.

The "no output" setting is a good idea. I'll bring that up to our writing
team, to see if it could be useful, and we'll take a look at using condition
text for print-specific information.

As I mentioned in a follow-up, one idea we have tried is to set up the HTML
project for the updated topics (or the entire manual) and provide both the
comment-enabled PDF and the link to the HTML, so that the content reviewers
can see the "big picture" as well as the details in the PDF (or the both the
forest and the trees). It's a learning experience for everyone.

Review Process for documents in HTML?

2009-04-08 Thread Beierle, Cecily
Some of the differences between the PDF and the HTML are:
Under the chapter, there's empty space, because the first heading starts on a
new page; in HTML, the mini-TOC will fill in that space.

Some graphics imported into the FrameMaker are not completely visible (too
large to fit reasonable on the printed page; in HTML those graphics are shown
in full. The reviewer can't see the whole picture in the PDF.

As for generating output from the HTML: it's possible but time consuming,
unless there are tips/tricks available. Our documents are often several
pages.

One approach we've tried is to create the HTML project and include a link to
the HTML in the PDF review packet, so they can see the forest and the trees.

There's no reason that "web-friendly" should mean "PDF-unfriendly." It's
pretty common and not particularly difficult to use the same FM source
files to create both PDFs or printed books and online help.

What is it about the changes you made to the FM source files that makes
review in PDF much more difficult?

In general, you should make "web-friendliness" changes in the WebWorks
style designer, not by changing the FM formats. For instance:

-- There's no reason to change fonts in FM, do it in WebWorks.

-- If you have xrefs with page numbers in FM, redefine them in WebWorks.

-- Judicious use of a bit of conditional text (e.g., Print and HTML
conditions) will take care of the bits that are specific to one output.

-- You can also tell WebWorks to exclude certain formats (pgfs, chars,
tables, etc.) entirely from the output. For instance, all my screen
shots are in a FigAnchor pgf. In WebWorks, it's set to no output (I
don't put screen shots in the help).

Re: Review Process for documents in HTML?

2009-04-08 Thread Art Campbell
Just to clarify something

If all the content is in Frame, I'm not understanding how output from
Frame source to a PDF would differ from output to HTML. Which means, I
think, why can't your SMEs continue to review in Acrobat since it has
much stronger review and comment tools?

Or if there is a difference in output, why not generate PDFs from the
HTML pages?
