A friend and colleague is seeking some apparently lost films done by and with
the famous anthropologist Gregory Bateson in the 1950s in San Francisco:

Any leads would be appreciated.

The following films are not to be found in any public collection

1. Ruesch, J., and W. Kees. Children in groups. 16mm sound film. Running time,
about 25 minutes.
Langley Porter Clinic, San Francisco. 1954.

2. Ruesch, J., G. Bateson, and W. Kees. A problem child before and after
therapy. 16mm film. Running time, about 25 minutes. Langley
Porter Clinic, San Francisco. 1955.

3. Ruesch, J, G. Bateson, and W. Kees. The child who does not speak. 16mm film
. Running time, about 30 minutes. Langley Porter Clinic, San Francisco, 1955.

4. The second two reels of: Ruesch, J, G. Bateson, and W. Kees. "Communication
and interaction in three families.”
16mm sound Aim. Runn ing time, about 75 minutes. Distributed by Kinesis, Inc .,
San Francisco. 1952.

5. Possibly a film on a seeing eye dog.

The following films exist are in public or quasi-public repositories

1. Gregory Bateson & Weldon Kees, “The Nature of Play,” ca. 1952. (@ UCSC)

2. Reel 1 of Ruesch, Bateson, and Kees, “Communication and Interaction in Three
Families (@ Prelinger / archive.org<http://archive.org>)

The following films are to be found in private hands, in varying states (it
would be great to find better copies or public copies)

1. Ruesch & Kees, “Approaches and Leave-takings,” ca. 1952.

2. Bateson & Kees, “Hand-mouth coordination,” ca. 1952.

Kees films

As far as I can tell all of Weldon Kees’ films, produced without Bateson or
Ruesch, are publicly available, in particular though the Kansas Historical
Society.
