Re: [Frameworks] reflexivity and Dziga Vertov

2014-11-25 Thread jaime cleeland
John, thank you for that link.  Is it possible that I quote from it ?  I am a
undergrad student at Bangor University, Wales.  The paper is for an assignment
for a class on documentary theory.Secondly, can I ask you how long did it take
you to research and write your paper ?  I am interested because I see that
there is much original thought that carries the work.Thirdly, what is your new
book ?

I've got a lot about this in my upcoming book on Vertov, but here's something

Re: [Frameworks] reflexivity and Dziga Vertov

2014-11-25 Thread Benjamin Léon
Hi Jaime,

You can find an interesting analysis/interpretation about Man with a Movie
Camera in the first chapter/introduction of The Language of New Media by
Lev Manovich. It's an archaeological media approach with a new point of
view of Cinema History. Manovich uses Man with a Movie Camera as a
starting point for his epistemology. Despite a systematically and a
methodically approach (it's not my way of thinking), there's some great
notes about the film, especially his reflexivity aspects.

*Cf. The Language of New Media by Lev Manovich / Prologue: Vertov's
Dataset. *

I don't have the book in hand, and it has been awhile since I read it, but
I believe that there is also a useful discussion on Vertov and MWMC in
Robert Stam's Reflexivity in Film and Literature: From Don Quixote to
 Jean-Luc Godard.

 Best,

 CC

Re: [Frameworks] reflexivity and Dziga Vertov

2014-11-25 Thread John MacKay
Hi Jaime,

and of course, please cite as you'd like!

Your second question is tricky: I wrote this piece up for a guidebook to
Russian cinema, but it was rejected (as too complex), so I just decided to
get it up on the web anyway. It's the only piece on MWMC that seriously
integrates archival material, to my knowledge, but touches on only some of
the film's many aspects. To answer more directly, though: writing it took
very little time, but I've been researching Vertov for over a decade.

The new book (which I'm finishing now) is a critical biography that
addresses all periods of his life and work, and Vertov reception as well;
I've published a lot on Vertov already. Send on any other questions you
might have, and good luck with the paper!
Yours,
John
