[Frameworks] net neutrality and US filmmakers

2017-12-07 Thread david at lake ivan
I just came from a demonstration in New York against the end of net neutrality
in the US, a crowd of around 300 people.

If I understand correctly, the end of net neutrality will almost be worse for
small filmmakers and small film venues in the US than it will be for anyone
else. We are the ones who use video streaming in the normal course of making
and sharing our work. In the past year, almost every festival or venue I
submitted my work to wanted to preview the work on Vimeo. Every filmmaker I
know uses Vimeo to submit their work to festivals and venues.

When US telecoms charge companies enormous fees to provide decent video
streaming to US customers, will Vimeo have to charge their US customers bigger
fees, too? Will Vimeo go out of business? Or just drop its US customers?

How will we submit our work to small festivals and venues if there are no
longer affordable streaming services? Or show our work to the general public,
for those films which we choose to share online?

Like a lot of people, I am a bit lost in the legal and technical aspects of
this issue and I'm not sure I even understand all the ramifications correctly.
I'd be happy to hear other people's thoughts and insights about this.

[Frameworks] A re-introduction and my project, “TRANSMUTATIONS”.

2017-12-07 Thread Jesse Andrewartha

Hi All!

Please allow me to re-introduce myself. My name is Jesse Andrewartha, I am a
photographer and filmmaker based on Vancouver, BC. I have made a number of
short films over the past four years and won some accolades in the festival
circuit. I’m posting today to ask for your help with my Kickstarter campaign.

I know there have been a myriad of these in the past posted to this forum, some
posts outright rude and so I do not ask flippantly. There’s a lot of demands on
your wallet this time of the year, but I believe I have a unique project and
some nice filmic & art rewards. If you choose to read further, check out my
campaign and contribute, I’ll be deeply grateful for your assistance! With that
said...

I would like to ask for your support for my Kickstarter campaign,
"TRANSMUTATIONS: Visualizing Matter | Materializing Vision" – a unique,
immersive, mixed media project combining an expanded 16mm documentary and
series of uranotypes that explore ecological and cultural legacies of uranium
mining, relationships between ‘apocalyptic’ material practices and the capacity
of symbolism to communicate their force.

Nuclear issues have risen to the forefront of contemporary political discourse:
from rising tensions with North Korea, the continued contamination from
Fukushima to proposed resumption of uranium mining in the latest assault on US
national monuments. The urgency of this project, to provide space for
commentary on human-material practices, impacts on communities and to images
adequate to convey the force of radioactive materials, is why I believe it is
important to undertake this project now.

Your contribution will directly fund fees to guide and access fees to selected
selected mines in Utah and Saskatchewan that will be featured in the
documentary.

I’m 19% of the way with 2 weeks left! In the short week the campaign has been
live, it was selected as a “Project We Love” by Kickstarter and has been
featured on websites such as RadioactiveThings.com and
undergroundexplorers.com! Here’s the link:

Please help me to share this work by heading over to my Kickstarter, watch the
intro and videos and make a donation if you can. If not, please consider
spreading the word to friends and colleagues by sharing the link above.
Needless to say, I am humbled and incredibly grateful for any contribution to
my project.

Thank you all for your time!

2017-12-07 Thread Francisco Torres
Life under capital is already bad and it is only going to get worse.
Maybe it is time to move to physical media like portable hard drives,
memory sticks or 4k discs. Because in the current political climate it
is almost certain net neutrality is going to end.

I thought Green Eggs and Ham was better.

You seem to see some connection between warning the soldiers of an occupying
army not to fraternize with the locals and sexual harassment of filmmakers? Or
are filmmakers the harassers?
