(Posted on behalf of Mark McElhatten, Jerome Hiler and Nathaniel Dorsky.)

In a Silent Way: Rarities by Jerome Hiler and Nathaniel Dorsky
MARCH 15th  at 8:15pm
Francesca Beale Theater - 65th Street off Broadway at Lincoln Center

Jerome Hiler and Nathaniel Dorsky in person!

First Public Screening!
In the Stone House (footage)
Jerome Hiler | 1967-70/2012 | USA | 16mm/18fps | 30m (approx.)
Two Personal Gifts a.k.a. Fool's Spring
Jerome Hiler and Nathaniel Dorsky | 1966-67 | USA | 16mm/18fps | 7m
World Premiere!
Kodachrome Dailies from the Time of Song and Solitude (Reel 1)
Nathaniel Dorsky | USA | 2005-6 | 16mm/18fps | 30m (approx.)
Two companionable masters of contemporary silent film will present a very
special program of intimacy and risk usually reserved for invitational
sub-rosa, subterranean home viewing. Call it (Koda)chrome Dreams or The
Basement Films. The works presented will be projected as unique prints or
spliced original reversal stocks. The most recent works have never been shown
in public before. This is a night for exhilarating cinema celebrating the
poetics of perception in everyday experience. The timing of this program is in
honor of the inclusion of Dorsky's The Return (NY premiere at VIEWS NYFF 2011)
and Hiler’s Words of Mercury (World Premiere at VIEWS NYFF 2011) in this year’s
Biennial of The Whitney Museum of American Art. Both Words of Mercury and The
Return made several of the most informed top ten lists of 2011 in national
journals. With inspirations deriving from Japanese renga poetry, medieval
stained glass, ancient and contemporary music,
and a continuum of cinema that embraces Ford, Ozu, Brakhage (and many others),
Hiler and Dorsky have each forged a personal language of open confidences,
films  that are experimental, shorn of narrative fiction, addressing and
involving the viewer directly in the adventure of seeing and feeling.
Curated by Mark McElhatten.
In conjunction with this event, Film Society will present free screenings of
Oswley Brown III Jerome Hiler's Music Makes a City: A Lousiville Orchestra
Story (2010), for which Nathaniel Dorsky was a key editor, from March 15 – 22
in the Film Center's Amphitheater. 7p.m. NIGHTLY with additional screening
times daily to be announced.

that this year, and will be sending out an email to everyone who's

As for the tape, we aren't able to return submission materials to
filmmakers who send them in. We have absolutely no budget for the
festival, as the festival is free to submit to, and any fees for
screenings have gone entirely to cover the cost of the screening
venue. Due to this, we simply cannot afford the postage (not to
mention the time involved) to send submission materials back to
filmmakers. I'll make a note of this on our entry form going forward.
Additionally, we're only accepting submissionms on NTSC DVDs this
 year.
This festival was started three years ago by a couple of guys who had

[Frameworks] Shipping Hard Drive Internationally

2012-02-22 Thread Jonathan Capone
Hi Frameworkers,

I recently shot a couple hours of HD footage that I need to send to
a colleague in the UK. I tried to Print to Video, but the transcoding is
taking weeks on my current system. Since the project is long over due, I
think my only option is to ship a hard drive with the project files on it.
Anyone have experience shipping a Hard Drive with information on it from
the US to UK, or somewhere similar? Does anyone know of the best way to
ship this safely?

Best,

Copy the hard drive to another hard drive.

Verify that the copy works. (Toast has a utility that compares folders).

Then send it off and don't worry about it. When it arrives intact, and they
verify everything's there, you can delete your copy.

Customs is a different matter - anything sensitive on there?

Re: [Frameworks] BASEMENT MEDIA FEST #3 (2012) CALL FOR ENTRIES

2012-02-22 Thread Christine Lucy Latimer

As someone who screened in the most recent Basement Media Festival, I
fully endorse it and encourage everyone to continue submitting. I screened
work in 28 film festivals all over world in 2011, from tiny grassroots
events to well-established, well-funded festivals. Having run the gamut of
good and bad festival experiences, I mush say that the Basement Media
Festival is definitely among the good! LJ and Nick were always
communicative, accommodating and kind to their filmmakers (they even
extended the offer of a couch to crash on when I told them I was likely too
broke to travel to the festival!)

Not only that, but they wound up securing us more than one screening
opportunity! The Basement Media Festival was supposed to just be in
Boston, but due to their go-getter attitude, they also got the program
screened in Brooklyn, NY. Their comportment as festival programmers rivaled
many of the other larger-scale festivals I participated in. They're good,
 hard-working guys.

Well, I suppose I have a two-part answer for you:
First-off, I apologize. The festival is basically completely organized
by just two people with full-time jobs and we haven't in the past been
able to respond to everyone who submitted. We're working on changing
that this year, and will be sending out an email to everyone who's
submission we receive, regardless of whether they get in to the
   festival.
Additionally, we're only accepting submissionms on NTSC DVDs this
   year.
This festival was started three years ago by a couple of guys who had
no experience running a festival. This whole thing is a big learning
experience for us, and I hope you'll bear with us.
Again, thanks for submitting and I'm sorry if you feel slighted in any
   way

Hey there, folks. The BASEMENT media festival is officially issuing
 to
you, the fine people of FrameWorks, this call for submissions.
The BASEMENT media fest is a low-fidelity film and video festival,
that focuses on shorts of a non-narrative nature. We accept
submissions of all formats, from hi-8 to 16mm to DV, as long as the
work focuses on the mediated aspect of motion picture recording.
In a world filled with 2K Cameras and IMAX, we celebrate the low-res
   and the low-tech.
For more information on BASEMENT, including our past programs, visit
   our website: http://basementmediafest.com.
And here's a link to our submission form, just in case you're
interested in that sort of thing:
   http://basementmediafest.com/2012entryform.pdf
It's free to submit, and the DEADLINE is JULY 29th. Screening will
occur in late 2012 - more info to come.
   Thanks folks,

Additionally, we're only accepting submissionms on NTSC DVDs this year.

Why not save yourself a whole bunch of hassle and have submissions be
electronic? Thats quickly become the new standard and no need to deal with a
pile of mile in your basement where submissions can get misplaced. Mailing DVDs
is a waste of time, money and resources.

Re: [Frameworks] Shipping Hard Drive Internationally

2012-02-22 Thread John Woods
There are no sensitive files, just project files.  Any ideas about the best
shipping method, USPS, UPS?

Shipping internationally with UPS/FedEx incurs additional 'brokerage' fees when
it goes through customs, something that won't happen when you use your national
carrier. This fee will increase depending on the value you place on the hard
drive so don't be tempted to maximize the value for insurance purposes.

I definitely know what you mean, John. We've accepted electronic
submissions in the past, due to extenuating circumstances, but we
generally like having the physical copies just because it makes it
easier for us to keep things organized.
