 A PLACE ON EARTH
With an introduction by filmmaker and restorationist Ross Lipman
(schedule permitting). A Place On Earth is a fiction film made with the
participation of a real commune in Moscow, one in which the director
himself lived. As with Palms, Aristakisyan's previous work, A Place on
Earth is not just a film; it is an encounter, and it leaves one
unsettled by its radical ethical demands. Says Aristakisyan: The film
does not leave room to maneuver and avoid change... It precludes the
very possibility for indulgence in collective delusions after having
seen it... It also precludes the possibility for neatly sweeping its
contents under the intellectual rug...This is not a socially conscious
film. There is no society... It is not a philosophical film either.
There are no authorial points of view or ideas. It has to be
admitted—this film is dangerous. Truly dangerous. Dir. Artur
Aristakisyan, 2001, 120min, projected from DVD

Re: [Frameworks] MFA

2012-08-18 Thread David Tetzlaff
What do YOU want to get out of your studies?

Outside of the industry-oriented schools (USC, FSU, Chapman etc.) the main
reason people seek an MFA is it's considered a terminal degree, and thus the
minimal qualification for most college teaching jobs.

If you just want to become a better filmmaker (whatever that means to you) an
MFA could certainly be useful, but there are other ways to go about it as well.
Depends in part on what kind of films you want to make.

By full-ride I assume you mean a fellowship? Extraordinarily rare. TA
positions that will cover tuition and expenses are also rare. Most students
have to take out loans. Large state schools where film is connected to a rubric
of 'communication' or 'RTF' are the best bet for TA slots: Wisconsin, Texas,
Temple... don't know about Iowa since Film split with Com... Schools where film
falls under the fine arts / studio art are not going to have much for TA spots,
if anything.

Keep in mind that most people who teach in grad programs are specialists, and
thus programs that offer that 'good technical foundation' often establish that
as a habit-of-mind to the detriment of individual practice, conceptualization,
experimentation...

By far the most important thing in applying to grad school for anything is to
learn about the faculty, and find someone you think can be an effective mentor
for you. That not only means you respect their work, but you have reason to
believe thay are a good and caring teacher, will be on campus and available,
open to your creative interests, and likely to get along with you personally.
Of course, you can't glean all that from reading bios and course descriptions
on the web. Start there, identify some possibilities, and then dig further.
Talk to current and/or former students -- certainly before you enroll anywhere,
and maybe before you even go through the rigors of applying.

Even for an arts program, your GREs will play a role in terms of what schools
you can get into, and what kind and how much support in terms of TA hours you
may be offered. Recommendations are important as well, especially glowing ones
from people who are networked with the faculty at the particular program. If
you don't have that sort of 'inside track' or didn't kick ass on the GREs,
don't set your expectations too high.

Re: [Frameworks] MFA

2012-08-18 Thread Chuck Kleinhans
A few additional considerations:

Ask current and former students at the schools you are considering how long it
actually takes to complete the MFA, what the average completion time is, etc.

Some students more or less choose to stay on in an MFA program rather than
rapidly completing it because they like the environment, friends, and
especially access to equipment that they would otherwise have to buy or rent.

Consider your living expenses over time: do you need a car in this place? how
much will that cost? what is the cost of living, especially rent, in a safe
environment? A program you can complete in 2 years may be a better bet than
one that takes 3 or 4 years.

Are there any jobs or gigs in the area? What would you be comfortable with?
What could you make enough at? What would advance your professional skills?
Think broadly: do you have to be in the union? would you shoot wedding videos
for some outfit that does that? can you live with logging someone else's tapes
for hours on end? Do you have some other skill that will actually pay pretty
well to keep you going?

What is your aim with the portfolio: a bunch of short calling card films?
potential festival pieces? your ambitious indie/Sundance project? How will
you finance your portfolio work?

Will your partner, parents, and kids if you have them suppport you in all this?
 for how long?

It's great to have an aspiration; it's important to temper it with a realistsic
assessment before you get started.

Re: [Frameworks] St Louis, Missouri USA

2012-08-18 Thread Cari Machet
i am from there

the art house is the tivoli in university city

the school that has a theatre is the university in webster groves - they
have had some good screenings

the art museum has screenings and there are some progressive galleries but
these are in the city - nothing to speak of in the suburban areas at all
besides university city and webster groves

depending on your type of work the botanical garden might be a good place -
they have art shows there and do interesting horticultural work there in
terms of urban farming etc.

[Frameworks] Meditation in Blue -- new piece on You Tube

2012-08-18 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

Meditation on Blue (http://youtu.be/bmGZ5vWu8HE) is the simplest
piece I have ever posted. One sequence, one filter, no music, and (to
me, at least) a certain magic. It is one of those happy accidents
that can bless the artist who is attentive enough to notice them. I
was working on some material to use in my live mixing performances,
and had made a six minute sequence of symmetrized video from two
shots of trees over and reflected in water.

I often take these sequences make make variants of them for mixing by
applying different filters to the entire sequence, and putting the
versions that I like on the same DVD as the original for use in
performance. When I do this, I am not attempting to make finished
pieces.

In this case, one of the sequences particularly caught my eye. I
looked closely at it, and decided that it was a complete piece in its
own right and didn't even need a soundtrack.

You can watch it in silence or with any music that is expansive and
not aggressive -- such as Indian Classical Music, Bach, or any kind
of (relatively quiet) improvised music. Enjoy, and please let me know
what you think of the pieces.

BTW Some of my photography can be viewed at
